Welcome back to our channel! In this video, we pit two powerful 300HP outboard engines against each other: the Yamaha 300HP and the Mercury 300HP ProXS, both mounted on our robust SeaKing Hunter720 plate boat.
Join us as we take these beasts for a spin on the river, putting them through their paces at different rev ranges. We'll be comparing fuel consumption, top speed, and overall performance to help you decide which engine suits your boating needs.
📊 Key Comparisons:
- Fuel efficiency at various RPMs
- Top speed and acceleration
- Handling and performance on the water

Great review Guy! Told ya that the Yamaha would beat the Mercury in the low and mid range! And it looks like top end speed as well. Sadly, it beats the Mercury in noise level, too. Still, I think I can help that situation out as previously discussed. So many variables in these comparisons like gear case ratios, prop design etc. It'll be interesting out in the open water.

Yeah mate - we do that test this weekend. I have 3 x 720m coming to Townsville. 2 with Merc and 1 yamaha. So we will repeat the process. Its blowing 25knots too at the moment but we will find some half decent water around the island. We have a hole shot race lined up so will be interesting. Stay tuned for version II soon

Yes the new Merc V range, go boldly. Yes, without a doubt, it will get you there quicker, potentially at better fuel consumption, probably a better look unit, imo. However the yammy will get you to your destination and back again more often without a doubt. Yammy overall servicing would be cheaper too, guarantee the merc will need something replacing that's not covered by warranty. Differently regarding the old L4 & L6 verado's, they were next level in that point of time, reliability at its best if properly maintained and not thrashed. Given time the new merc V range will be good when they iron out a few of the gremlins.

That may be the case but the holeshot won't be as quick. Witnessing the Yamaha perform on that boat was amazing. It may be noisier but there's no denying the grunt it has. There may be even more untapped performance on that Yamaha going up a hole on the transom and having a bit more of a cup on the prop but keeping the same pitch. It's pretty impressive as it currently is though.

@1Longranger yeah agree, the yammy can be tuned up a bit with the Nizpro option. Some big gains are achievable.. However, upping the prop on the merc one pitch size will compromise hole shot a little, no doubt, but for us the average recreational fisho, excessive performance in hole shot is over rated, unless the need to cross barways or having a comp bass boat.. not many rec fisho's I know put the hammer down flat out from a standing start, just because they can. Excessive fuel burn, and especially additional wear and tear on these newer 4 stroke engines can be costly in the long run.

@@jb243wp If the Merc was only just pulling 6k rpm then maybe going up in pitch won't help much. Don't the 300hp Pro XS engines like to rev? I thought they loved spinning to 6200rpm? If they make supposedly 10-15% above nameplate rating then what's going on there?? It should have blitzed the top end speed especially being 60kg's lighter as well as being larger in cubic capacity. It's a great engine no doubt and I deliberated long and hard over buying one. I don't think you could go wrong either way. I won't be doing the Nispro tune on the Yammie for warranty reasons.

What a joke it's not even close to 60 kg lighter 😂

Do you think some sound deadening material on the inside of the boat frame and canopy would help the noise issue from the boat vibrating?
@seakingnthqld
@seakingnthqld Ай бұрын
I think so. A customer we are building a 720m for is going to trial some form of covering around the inside - he is researching it as we speak as he is a Yamaha man. I think it will make a real difference.

You do know the yammy has a rpm control function that allows you to change the rpm 50 at a time? Interesting to compare my NIZPRO tuned yammy. In the mid range 4600rpm I’m killing that yammy for l/hr getting 46l/hr but less speed. once you hit 5000 mine is worse and then I can only manage 5700rpm and burning 88l/hr Im getting less speed because it’s a big glass boat with horrible antifoul. Thanks for that. I have been chasing a comparison for my motor and you nailed it for me.

And the Nizpro tune actually makes them quieter. But not by much.

Yeah we want to trial a 17P prop on it before we hand over to new owner. I think we can get better speed and economy and still stay in the allowable max rpm range

You run the exact same model prop? Or just the same pitch/diameter ?

Sheees, maybe a pair of ear plugs for yourself and you crew if ya got the yammy. 😂😅😂 The merc could go up one pitch in prop size being a larger displacement, then it defiantly would out preform the yammy at 6000rpms hand down both in speed and fuel consumption. But how long the merc will last is anyone's guess. Great review, nice work 👍
