So regret selling this beauty some 15 years ago - nothing else sounds quite like this, Yamaha came up with a classic not even realizing it back then.

I was pretty much ignoring the video in the background (its my work day) but the sounds at 6:00 immediately grabbed my attention. Yamaha should put these back into production with a stronger heavier case, and rename it AN2x with some really breathtaking presets and people will buy this keyboard it will never get old and will always be one of the best.

In my opinion, this is the best "sounding" most musical sounding VA ever made. If Yamaha had put that sound engine in a case with higher build quality, there would be no contest. It is kind of cheaply built but don't be fooled.. This is a HIGH END unit.

In the late 90's I saved up and bought one of these upon the recommendation of some producer friends. I didn't know a thing about synthesis, and was totally puzzled by this synth (just an idiotic bassist who got into electronic music). Someone broke into our storage a few years after and stole a lot of musical gear, including this synth. It was a huge loss, life changing, but I recalled the difficulty editing this synth and used that to consoled myself with that memory. I've since finally learned how to create compelling electronic music, and have managed, over great amounts of time to put some gear together. I just hit play on this video and it hurt so bad knowing I had this synth, with this sound quality and didn't know how good it really was, and that I lost it and that I'll never be able to afford it again. It really hurts. I literally felt pain listening to the first few notes. Life moves on.

What's funny is that they sort of already did what asked them NOT to do: the Reface CS is designed with the same engine as the AN1x and AN200, just, you know, "modern" (in other words: stripped down to appeal to the analog nuts by omitting the menu).

adey7569 The EX series has the AN engine built in and sounds really stellar. Only real drawback is the slow floppy disk loading time, but by now I wouldn't be surprised if that Bulgarian company or someone else has come out with a floppy drive emulating flash drive for it. I have one in my SY99 and it really brings the SY into 21st century competence.

I gave in to GAS after seeing this demo couple of times and I got myself one. Great demo, great sounds! One of the secrets of this synth is feedback parameter. If you turn filter resonance up and then turn feedback up to arround 80 it shifts energy from cutoff frequency part of the spectrum to lower part of the spectrum. And then magic happens :)

This thing doesn't have the sexiness of a virus but what an amazing sound this thing puts out. If you listened to trance in the 90s you were listening to this thing 80% of the time. I just picked one up with less than 5 hours of on time and cant wait to fiddle it. I was an early adopter of VSTis and used to argue that software on computer can do anything software on a synth can do but that's like saying a schoolbus can do anything a lambhorgini can do. There is something that takes a life of its own with dedicated hardware meant to drive that software and this thing proves it.
@kgbinfo
@kgbinfo 8 жыл бұрын
Actually, most trance back in the 90s was made with the JP-8000 (as it offered the supersaw waveform , this did not).
@mumulove
@mumulove 8 жыл бұрын
Uh have you heard of PARTS? The supersaw is a very specific sound. and yes it was used a lot. But the supersaw is a BASS oriented wave. I suppose to be accurate i should have said if you listened to edm in the 90s you heard this on the LEADS. But I did mention trance which implies leads. The supersaw was more a techno superstar where the bass sounds prevail.

Meh, I actually think the Virus is hideous and like the look of the AN1x. I think trance is one of the worst things to ever happen to electronic music, so luckily this beautiful synth is capable of so much more than that.

anyone know if the yamaha AN1x can be used as a midi controller in ableton (on Mac)?. I want to buy this synth, but I need to know that first. THANKS
@roboticrealm
@roboticrealm 10 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you mean by that. The AN1x has midi of course. However, it does not have a USB port since it's from 1997. So you have to have some kind of midi interface to be able to connect it to the computer. And I don't know if the knobs on the synth can control aspects of software synths if you know what I mean, if that is what you're looking for. I have a PC myself and use Cubase, and I have two different midi interfaces: MOTU Midi Express 128 and M-Audio Midisport 4x4. Either one works with the AN1x to hook up a computer. The M-Audio is a bit old and I don't know if it works with Mac but the MOTU does.

The AN1X was marketed as a MIDI controller first and an analog modeling synth second. So, yes, it's a quite capable MIDI controller. Your only problem will be that you'll need a DIN MIDI USB interface if you don't already have one. Cheap ones are about $5 on Amazon.

That sounds really weird. I can't remember that I had to do anything with the AN1x really to get it to work. However, I have mostly worked with AN1x editor files and sent patches back and forth or whole sets of sounds. Just to test it you could download these patches audiobombs.com/items/173/yamaha-an1x-patch-bank and load them into the editor (after you've unpacked it) and choose Select All and the Send. That should work. I have never had any problems with it. You have connected with both midi in and midi out to the computer? My synth have recieve and transmit channel set to 1.

Wikipedia tells me that Dave Smith worked in R&D for Yamaha in the early '90s after Sequential went under, and his research into physical modelling (aka virtual analogue) ultimately led to the release of this synth in 1997. Apparently the firmware reveals that its oscillators were modelled on those of the Prophet 5 and 10. Unfortunately for Yamaha, Roland's JP-8000 came out a few months before the AN1x and everyone raved about the ease of use and the Supersaw sound, causing Yamaha UK to issue a preset bank that was essentially a clone of what the Roland did by default. With Yamaha's unison and feedback filters, you could get pretty much the same trancey sounds out of this box too. Since it does a pretty good emulation of the famous Sequential and Jupiter analogue sounds, but is more reliable (and has highly capable MIDI functionality) it's kind of weird that this device isn't as sought after - or as expensive - as the creaky old synths it was designed to replace.

Can´t agree. AN1x totally matches analogue phatness if tried to mimic a high end analogue side by side, but it´s horribly hard work. I “copied” and improved some of my Oberheim OB8´s patches on AN1x but some sounds took days. It certainly sounds a bit different but absolutely not thinner than an OB. Edge, VCA Feedback & its EQ are the key. To scene-morph totally different OB8 programs on AN1x turned quite unusual because it led to further recognizable OB-patches
@AutPen38
@AutPen38 Жыл бұрын
It should do better for emulating a Prophet, since Dave Smith researched physical modelling when he worked for Yamaha, and the firmware for the AN1x reveals its oscillators and filters were modelled on the early Sequential polysynths.
@Gerald_Daniel
@Gerald_Daniel Жыл бұрын
@@AutPen38 I knew that Dave Smith was involved but there ain' t any Prophet that modulates Saw instead of Pulse when Saw & Pulse is pressed together. That feature is initiated by Oberheim. AN1X belongs to that small range of synths that's capable of as well. Luckily OB did not forget about it with their present OBX8. Since AN's Resonance does not fade out Bass and Volume iit's at least in theory closer to Oberheim than SCI & I can' t exactly remember ancient Prophets with Random LFO. All in all Dave Smith was known as innovator: Thus AN1x remains an exciting piece of VA history, more complex than any vntage Prophet ever was.

I bought one of these but never learned to program it, I would like to sell it (posted 2 December 2017, Sutton near London). I think I still have the box and manual, ISSUES: I had lent it to a family who lived nearby and didn't realise the kids would abuse it; or that the parents would then rub off quite a bit of the markings when cleaning it , presumably, before I collected it - do get in touch if you're interested, it's not that bad, electronically perfect - plays fine never gigged and hardly used apart from that damage. Even in that beat-up condition it's worth £250, they go for £350 - £400 in good order if you can find one. I think it's easier to say I won't take an offer, I have changed the battery inside, these are highly sought after and had I realised I would have kept in the box and no lent into the mystery family lol...

What audio interface or recording device have you used to convert analog audio to digital? Have you recorded it on 24bits 48khz? Thanks a lot.

My synth goes through a mixer console, a Yamaha MG16, then I use a Focusrite Forte, and I think I've recorded on 24bits 44khz.

I've just bought one of these and should have it in about a week and a half. How do you import patches off the internet or use the editor if it doesn't have a USB input?

+cheep shot You need a midi interface like something from MOTU or M-Audio which I have.

Such a damn shame that these are so expensive. I would like to own one so much, but I really don't have the money.

Expensive? They are among the cheapest synthesizers you can find, at least here in Europe. I bought mine for about 250 Euros. I mean compare that to for example an OB-6 that costs 3000 Euros...

Well, I was only looking at Ebay prices. Silly me. I'll try to search a lil' deeper, maybe I can get 'em a lil' cheaper. That rhymed.

xXx_420_360_HaX0rDaN0uSkoupah#sWaG#l3g1t_darud3w33dstorm_360_420_xXx For the money this is the best synth out there. Yamahas two greatest pure synths that are truly affordable are the DX7 and AN1x. Even though ive seen their prices rise over the last 5 years. Compare to other synths like the Jupiters and Junos. They are still excellent value for money.

Wow it sounds great, but my god it is an ugly synth
@roboticrealm

Many think so, yes. However, I don't think it is that ugly. It's just the pale blue colour that is a bit...well, pale. Otherwise I think it looks ok.

I wouldn't say ugly. It's a funny shape that's all. It doesn't help that it isn't symmetrical.

it really has quite a bit more character than digital synths of the era, and really VAs are never going to be able to pull of the cool factor that analogs have with having a function per input.
