I second what Jexus (Olo Garb) said : " With other synths, you often need to mess around a while to control its sound so that it's convincing. They need more or less "polishing", let's call it. A sound that sounds good in the lower part of the keyboard gets too crappy when you play the higher frequencies on the right-hand side of the keyboard. So you need to rearrange the filter tracking, the treble/bass in EQ unit, etc. You play cat and mouse. You get tired faster. But with AN1x... it's great here and now, after twisting a knob, everywhere. This synth rarely sounds bad and the FX unit is one of the best I've heard - and for what a price! Gorgeous, sensual reverb. Just bear in mind that the start-up tone of this synth (and its factory presets) is more glassy than analog, so if you're after the latter, just be patient and keep tweaking until you reach your analog wonderland. And, like every virtual analog synth, the AN1x replictes only a specific kind / area of analogueness - in my ears it's the one of swishy Oberheim FVS basses, clear CS-80 leads, textured MS-20 fuzzes, stabby JX brass and toxic Polivoks screams as opposed to beefy ARPs, sturdy Matrix 6/1000 Oberheims, sweet Junos, crystalline Nords or whistling Akais. The engine depth is hardly spectacular, yet at the same time there's hardly any sound this synth is not capable of making. And they all have this special appeal; a sublime quality that I cannot describe with words, just like the mood in the movies of Sam Mendes or Paul Thomas Anderson. The AN1x timbre is like the best balance of Nord's brightness, Virus'es lucidity, JP8000's low-end, OB-X's organic-ness, and ION's peculiarity (although bad plastic traces of Korg Radias could be found too). And speaking of Virus, it needs to be said that Yamaha are the masters of FM; the Frequency Modulation section sounds so good on this synth, gives very musical results and reminds me why I didn't become friends with the TI. The FM section on the TI, in comparison, is just a switch for farting. The knobby panel on the left is semi-cozy and semi-quick, but much more time is needed to dive through the button panel on the right. So if there is any downside to this synth, it's the UI. Compared to other synths it takes quite some time to get through. But trust me and rest assured - it's quite intuitive. "All things are difficult before they become easy", as Goethe says. This is one of the greatest VA synths; I guess it's even the greatest one in the lowest price range. BUY IT NOW !! Aaaaaaaaaaaaargh!! I recommend it wholeheartedly if you need quality & adventure for low price. I just hope it doesn't get bought up by "electronic music" performers to play those fucking solos. It would be a shame, because this synth seems to be destined for beautiful & creative music in general. Yamaha, please get back to the game with a new VA synth. AN1x is still the best cheap analog emulation on the market."

Best VA Yamaha synth ever! 😎

Can't argue that. And I suspect I'll regret it as well after I sell it, but the music room unfortunately has finite space. And as it seems I can only moderately control myself with buying MORE gear, I have to figure something out. I've said it 10 times already, but I can't figure out why Yamaha didn't make or even re-issue an "AN1x mark II" or something similar, with ALL the same sound and programming capability, but more voices (at least 24) and an easier-to-use interface, and maybe in a module format (I'm ignoring the AN200 and Reface CS though both were ok). I would be ALL over that, and it would be small enough to more easily fit in the music room. Yamaha unfortunately doesn't seem too interested in analog or virtual analog so much nowadays.

Also be sure to check out the "AN2015" which is a free VA, and part of Yamaha's Synth Book for iOS...It's an equally perfect recreation of the AN1x with a plethora of new features updated for modern production! Probably my favorite digital synth ever, honestly. Aside from the kick-ass sound engine, there are just so many other nice features. Love the keybed, the modewheels, the ribbon, the morph feature, the arpeggiator, the 2-operator FM... it's just the shit. No idea why anybody would choose a JP-8000 over one of these.
@ProckGnosis4 жыл бұрын
I actually bought a JP-8080 first, and although I loved the SuperSaw and preferred the programming interface, sound-wise the AN1x ran circles around the JP-8080. And you're right about the features. The last few years I've gotten into sound design a lot more, and I really appreciate some of the parameters this thing offered. It was really unique...and sadly it still is more unique than it should be.

Do enjoy it. The interface is weird, but at least workable, and as you've heard, the sound is great. Yamaha really screwed the pooch on this one by never following up and improving the idea and taking it into the 21st century. The Reface CS wasn't bad, but instead of being "AN1X, the improved sequel" it was more like "stripped down AN1X"

Yep...I'm a Genesis fan, though they started losing their appeal for me a bit in the 80s. I remember playing with CS1x in a store, considering buying it...mostly because it was the only semi-cool looking synth nearing a price range I could afford. I also think I was confusing it with the AN1x.

Agreed on Genesis during the 80's. I'm an old fart in his 50's who preferred their early trademark years in the 70's with Peter Gabriel on lead vox moving on into the later introduction of Phil Collins filling the role. Anytime I feel like I'm having a bad day I can just run the title track from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway through my mind and all my troubles just seem to float away. Sidenote: Both Peter & Phil had a couple of tracks back in the 80's that I could actually tolerate. I'm sure you could take an accurate guess at which ones. " And the lamb ... lies down … on Bro oad way ...

@@ReneeNme I sort of got into them a bit around "Then there were 3," "Duke," and "Abacab". Being a synth nut, I really loved the keyboard sounds on Abacab, and that's honestly one of the reasons I haven't sold the AN1x yet...it nails that Abacab-era synth sound better than anything else I have. I REALLY got into Genesis when I found a used LP of "Trick of the Tail" in the late 80s (probably my fave, with "Selling England..." being a close second). Then I started getting familiar with the rest of the 70s catalog. To be honest, I got into synths as much from New Wave as old prog and classic rock, so I didn't mind the early 80s Genesis (and the bit of pop/new wave influence), but through the 80s each album had less and less I found interesting. Nowadays, I much more respect the route Gabriel took, just doing his own thing. There was plenty he did I didn't like (even on his first 3 albums), but he was at least still being fairly creative, and for me, the songs he did that I liked, I thought were phenomenal.

Then from the 8 knobs or dials organized like this: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Use knob number 7, called "FEG Depth" to control the amount of the filter envelope. Debating between this and the Jp8000, This thing sounds great but the JP's interface seems more fun
@ProckGnosis6 жыл бұрын
Agree. Owned a JP8080, and though the interface (knob/slider control) was MUCH easier and fun to work with, I think the AN1x has better sound and programming potential. Biggest thing the JP8080 had going for it sound-wise was the supersaw...which was cool. Bottom line is I sold the JP8080 a decade ago, and I didn't sell the AN1x.

I have a JP8000, it sounds great but very digital, But this seems warmer somehow, it's all about personal preference, but I always say, it's not so much the synth you have, but, bringing the best out of it.

Nice patches!!! Good synth but i could not vibe with the interface.
@ProckGnosis6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that interface was truly designed by an engineer, not a musician. Once I started getting my head around it, it wasn't too bad, but it's definitely not what I would prefer.

When you consider that 2/3s of the presents ARE shit compared to what this synth can really sound like, it's quite staggering... Just listen to: Jexus, JayB, Don Solaris ... All on here. - But well done on this vid, in helping to make the presents sound not too bad ;-)

Thanks...again, it's kind of surprising this thing is 20 years old, and apart from the semi-awkward (though still usable) interface, and a few digital artifacts, they created a very programmable and great sounding synth. Yamaha should kind of be embarrassed they had such a great start in virtual analog and then left it to basically die on the vine. Guess they just really didn't care about that niche of the market so much.

Jexus make it sound like utter crap in my opinion.

LOL.. That means your opinion is crap.
@snuppssynthchannel6 жыл бұрын
Phased Spaces You put this Jexus on a pedestal, even if his instrumental capabilities are low and his sounds are harsh and unaestetical. He have a tendency of detuning the oscillators to the point where it sounds sour to most musical ears.

Great video :) Yamaha AN1X is a beast but quite underrated :)

Du hast recht und vielen Dank. I just can't understand why Yamaha never followed up with something better in 20 years. This was a great starting point they could have improved, but they've done almost nothing with virtual analog since (and NOTHING with analog).
