I recently bought a dx7iid and with a few youtube tutorials and printing out the user manual i learned very quickly how to program it. The only real disadvantage is not being able to edit more than one parameter at the same time (like you can with knobs/faders on traditional synth layout) i dont understand why they have a rep for being so difficult to program because they are not. they're actually quiet simple, and very powerful. i highly recommend any serious producer to buy one. Do not fall for the lies, find out for yourself. It made me so happy when i learned that they're easy to use. So now ive ordered a sy77! another synth i always thought you needed to be a jedi to program!! Cant wait til it arrives

Thank you for taking the time to explain FM programming. I have a DX21 which I'm about to start programming. Cheers!

Can you do a tutorial on how to program brethy sounds like glass voices, flutes, soft voices or wind soundsds?
@reycote43119 жыл бұрын
Please adjust the camera view. We can't see what your hands are doing or what other controls are involved. Thanks.

+KUPSHER Yes the DX7 can produce a spectrum of sounds that still stuns me even after 25 years of owning one. Check out my next upload which will be called THE GREAT ONES. Coming at the end of the month. Which will be the DX7 and RX5 together for the first time in any of my uploads. And feature a SAXOPHONE patch and string pad and guitar/bell pad. that will show the variety of sound the DX7 makes that anyother PURE SYNTH not using SAMPLES would be hard pressed to match.

Cool Tutorial, I like the fuzzy tape like noise in the background complementary of the chosen Preset and voice. It gives a nice quality to it which makes someone who already knows how to program some FM synthesis interested in watching. The Camera quality even looks like it has some grain like textures to it.

+Ova nisamja Hi the opperators are elements that combined make up a sound. The more opperators combined the more fuller and complex the sound you will have.
@fender10001009 жыл бұрын
+Rey Cote There are no other controls involved those 32 green membrane buttons are where it all happens.

+Momsterjazzlicks hi theres a demo featuring piano on youtube. I left out certains details but the main meat and potatoes of what these parameters do is here including the decay.. The thing about the EG parameters in relation to the operators is they vary from patch to patch depending which operators are the carriers. So you have to know this before you can dial in a precise edit on any sound. With my lack of experience at these kind of videos it was likely I would leave something out as I made this without any rehearsal or script. So they are what theyre. I will do a video next to refine certain details I may have overlooked in these first attempts.

How do you tune the darn thing? What to do after pressing function and button 1? It doesn’t show anything else
@fender10001003 жыл бұрын
Tuning? The FREQUENCY COARSE/FINE button will change the PITCH of a sound. The Frequency COARSE AND FINE controls across the 6 operators.. Are where the magic takes place..and will allow you to manipulate the PITCH of any patch. get an array of sounds. As can be heard in my TUNE. RISE OF AN UNKNOWN. Which is 100% DX7.

I would be extremely interested to hear your DX GRAND PIANO if you would kindly upload please. I never heard a decent one yet! lol

Why do you keep phrasing your demands as such rather than questions and then pretending it's a joke, lol?

Thank you for uploading this DX series. I think a few FM owners will be interested (myself included!). But you never discussed the DECAY and SUSTAIN? Only the ATTACK and RELEASE! lol

+roboticrealm Hi don't have that patch written down. I will get it done when I have time. It uses the modulation wheel to create that echo type sound. Good to hear from you again. When I get it on paper I will email to it to you. Gosh system wouldn't know where to start...

Have you ever owned a Roland JX-8p? If so, do you find that programming it from its own front panel is similar to programming the DX7? I have an 8p and know that its interface is sprung almost directly from that of this model.
@foxyr4bbit7 жыл бұрын
hey, i have a dx7 and a jx-3p. not sure how much different the 8p is from the 3p in terms of the front panel interface but it looks like it operates in a very similar way to the 3p. you press group A or B and a corresponding button to select a parameter right? on the dx7 it's kind of similar, except there's no groups. you just go to edit mode and each parameter (or set of parameters) has its own associated button. then you adjust the slider or the left/right buttons for fine control. however they're different in that the dx7 uses FM synthesis so it's got different parameters for a different approach to synthesis
@fender10001006 жыл бұрын
Late reply sorry. Never owned a JX8P. Ive played one and they are wonderful synths. If I ever bought another 80s synth. It would be the JX8P. I rate it above anyother Roland synth. Even the JP8.

+ish233 Thanks this is part one of 8 tutorials I intend to do to open up the mystery of FM to as many as possible. Next I will focus on the Frequency Course/fine parameters and output level parameters. Lol! Yeah thats my ipad doing the recording.

Yeah, that's cool, 8 session tutorial. Good for reference of many viewer. I made one earlier in 2011, but wasn't informative, so I deleted it. I may do a tutorial on certain FM machines and their differences.
@fender100010010 жыл бұрын
ish233 Go for it the more informarion we can spread the better for this great form of synthesis. I have a patch on the DX7 that might be about the best non sampled grand piano a synth can produce. I will show it off in one of my tutorials and to illustrate how oustanding FM really is...
@ish23310 жыл бұрын
PROJECT DX nice, would like to hear that. I've heard plenty good ones, and some of the best the ones are the ones that really can replicate some velocity sensitive touch parameters. Keep the cool sounds coming.

Nice tutorial! I really like the patch. Would it be possible to get that patch from you? You sent me a few patches on paper a year or something ago. Maybe, if you have this one written down, you could take a picture of the paper with the written settings with your iPad and mail me the picture? Would that be possible? Thanks in advance! If you want a patch or two from me, as payment, I could give you a sysex file with some quite nice bell patches that I've managed to program...

KUPHSER Couldnt agree more. Remember this most people are very lazy. They want the EASY OPTION ALWAYS. But in going for the easy option they miss out on something very unique and very powerful.
@KUPHSER8 жыл бұрын
+PROJECT DX i totally agree also, people are lazy. ive even been telling people to look into the dx100 or tx18z because you get the real yamaha fm sound at a good price.. but i can guarantee you not a single one of these people will take on my advice. they're all blinded by vst synths, which are great and all, but these old yamahas are a true treasure pot. so unique and put out such a powerful sound... and thats even before you add processing!!
