So awesome to find this video. I am currently halfway through a rebuild on this exact instrument, which was my son's starter electric guitar. My previous effort involved removing the black polyurethane finish and then doing a blue burst paint job, finished with TruOil. (The dye I used has faded terribly over the years. I sanded back down to bare wood and am currently half way through applying a 'Chinese Red' lacquer finish. It is looking great. I'm modifying the electronics too - doing a coil split on the humbuckers and adding a second tone control (push pull on both). Watching your pickup work is extremely helpful.

Very glad it helped you. I would never repaint it, many people are more than ok with natural wear but anyway apart from dents here and there it looks fine for me. I would miss the point too to change the color as this was also my starter guitar and has sentimental value for me.

I did a restoration on a boat paddle guitar that was not a real guitar from 6 Flags TX. It was nearly as bad as shape as this guitar. A guy who sold it to me left it in a trailer that it rained indoors on it. I ended up replacing the neck because it was a fake neck with a fake truss rod in it. I ended up decking this Batman guitar out with brass big block,PRS style tremolo. Bone nut, roller string trees, I did put in some EMG's that were voices for 50's Dick Dale surfer music Strat and I messed up getting the wrong pickups but ended up loving them! Then I put some Fender locking tuners on it. and this thing plays like a pro guitar. Only thing is, I found out the body was made of plywood. haha! But its sturdy and sounds and plays awesome.

What tuners did you use? I did not see the frets leveling. It wasn't needed with such a damaged guitar? For frets final polishing you may use a steel wool 0000.
@antonisvidakis
@antonisvidakis Жыл бұрын
Cheap ebay tuners, basically identical to what the guitar had. Thanks for the tip about the wool. I use frequently 2000 grit sand paper and then polishing compound and cotton, it creates way more polish than anything else, I have turned aluminum to absolute mirror finish with just those. Have not done any fret leveling, I do not have the right tools and I do not think it was necessary too. Some frets had some significant wear so to lower the rest according to them I would probably do more harm than good. I think these should be first replaced and then do the leveling. If not changing them all. But again I have more guitars and I do not play much anymore anyway.
@roadster241
@roadster241 Жыл бұрын
@@antonisvidakis I understand With large differences in height the leveling may not be good enough. Then you have to reshape the crowns of the frets.. A lot of work and may be for nothing. Good luck.

I am highly skeptical of some of these videos - not the restoration, which appears genuine - but the state of the guitar at the beginning. I think younger players who get taken in by these videos don't really have a sense of how quickly guitars age: here's a tip - not as much as this, unless stored underwater in the ocean. I have 4 guitars that I have owned for 40 years, and I gigged them really, really hard all over the country. None of them are in a state like this. That bridge - there's no way something like that happens naturally, unless this guitar is 200 years old and was kept in a barn less than a mile from the sea.
@antonisvidakis
@antonisvidakis 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for commenting. Well the thing is that this is not a restoration channel. Out of 8 videos I have created until now only one has to do with restoration. So I am in no need to go around looking for old stuff or faking them for content material. Without saying that I will not do restorations in the future, hell, I have a few 30+ years motorcycles sitting around.. I do not know where you live, but my doorstep is exactly 150 meters from where the sea wave hits the sand, so the rust make no exceptions here on cars, motorcycles or guitars. Not some lake or some northern sea, I am talking about Mediterranean saltiness... Plus, these guitars are made in China and the plating quality of the metal parts is not top notch that will hold. I have an american Strat almost same age, never went outside house, yet you see that the chrome parts are not as shiny anymore. Believe it or not, three years ago I bought a brand new GPU. In less than two years I noticed corrosion on the aluminum heatsink. A working GPU inside my room..
