I have a tan label Yamaha FG-160 that I purchased new in 1973 for a whole $139 (with hard case)... What I really like about it is that it has a scaled down dreadnaught body - a great size. After purchasing a Taylor 810 dreadnaught in 2000, I put Nashville (tuning) strings on the FG-160. It absolutely shimmers with that splashy 12-string-like sound. Keep in mind, it’s an all-laminate guitar.

I just picked up a 1976 FG 180-1 Black Label…had been through hell and back and appeared nobody had ever taken care of it properly…I know I paid more than I should have for it and it will need a neck reset or bridge shave, however it still sits at 3mm on 12th fret and neck relief is at .010 so easily playable. Frets, tuners, fingerboard, top/back and bracing all good as is neck and all joint/binding areas. Once cleaned up and fitted with a bone nut and saddle/ebony pins this thing just absolutely rings with tone. Intonation is good and I cannot believe the sound that it projects….plywood spruce top, plywood mahogany back, sides and neck. Has the three tone back on it. It sounds so damn good I do believe I will pay for a neck reset which is going to be expensive here in Canada (from a highly rated luthier) but I doubt one would ever find a gem like this one. I also picked up a 1980 FG 331 and same same….sound is unbelievable and normally unobtainable to this degree. The 50th you played sounds great. I have a 2019 FGX3 and 2016 LL16 which are amazing instruments. Enjoy your channel and reviews, keep on picking my friend !!

I put Martin Retro strings on mine and it sounds incredible. These strings just get better with age as well.

I bought the last one in Australia a few years ago. It's the best sounding and most resonant guitar I've ever played.

Amazing sound, amazing playing. I have a brand new unplayed one in the box. I’m not opening it until I learn to play… I guess I better get with it. 😀

I have friend who learned guitar on a Yamaha in 1966. Should never have mocked him for getting a Japanese guitar. I know the guitar ended up being damaged. The guitar in the video sounds amazing

I ended up with my FGX5, which I really like and enjoy playing a lot, it's inspiring! I wanted to add one of these FG-180's as well, but they're hard to find at a decent price. Seems like there's a lot of supply and demand price bumping going on, which happens when the guitars are limited quantity such as this one. Why would they only make 180??? Good thing the original model number wasn't 5...

Hey Jarvis, so essentially, during the time of the production of these guitars, Yamaha produced these guitar in the Nippon Gakki factory. So essentially Nippon Gakki translates to a Japanese made instrument

Great review the 180 50th is cool but there is just no contest the fg3 fg5 range is next level better balance more resonance and just feels such quality my only issue is with the cheap pickguard on the fg3 I changed mive to wood pretty easy to do

Jarvis, great review. I really enjoy Yamaha guitars. It was difficult to tell the difference in your comparison. Can you tell us what you found when comparing the the two, in terms of sound and playability? Keep up the great videos!!!!!!

I have the FG180-50th. I bought it last year after listening to your reviews. I wanted a Japanese Yamaha but to my ears this was better. It did not disappoint when I finally cradled it my arms. Expectations met and exceeded! I dare say better than my US ‘95 Martin D16T. Still one lingering question, is it 180 all over? 180 in each country? Or ... any idea?

I boutght an FG-180 at a thrift store a year ago, and it is in PAAARRRRFECT condition!! 🤣 Absolutely unblemished! The "Prom Queen". In the original case, red felt lined, and full of church music. For $299, ISYN. Then, ten days ago, I bought another FG-180, and it's a little wounded. "The Ugly Stepmother." Structurally sound, but it ain't pretty. Paid $120 for it from a guy who wasn't a guitar guy. Top is scarred from use but not beyond the pale, back and sides are marred but not unforgivable. In the shop now getting refitted on the "drive train", nut, neck, fingerboard, saddle, bridge. Has a drop-related binding repair top and backside in the offing, but no implications for tone, so it can wait. How I love Yamahas, all that old wood and tone right there for the snatching. I love me some FG-180s now. I have my eye on a 30 year re-issue at a good price. Anyone know anything about the 30 year re-issues? There weren't many of them, I think.
