One gloomy Autumn day, I decided to taste the luscious flavours of the world of second hand litre bikedom. This is a quick test ride of a second hand 2006 Yamaha FZ1-N. With a super revvy enginge and a claimed 150hp, this should be an interesting ride! Oh and it's black. Very black. Black, with black, on black, over black, next to black. Did I mention that it's black?

I’ve had my 2012 FZ1 from new with lots of dealer extras fitted - Akrapovic carbon can etc etc ...... it’s a superb bike ; stable, fast and always makes me smile 😊 No bike is perfect but l just love my FZ1N and I’ve had a few bikes in my time - an iconic machine imo.

I just brought a 2006 so 13 years old and am enjoying it more with each ride. I find the seat a bit uncomfortable so I'll probably get a airhawk seat for long rides. Great for town rides as well. Came with power commander and after market exhaust but haven't been game to take it past 6500 revs at this stage! Nice video - thanks for sharing.

Definitely need the fairing... I have a 2012... The Factory exhaust weighs about 27 pounds... Yoshi R-77 saves well over 10 pounds. PC5, Auto-tune, K&N filter, and custom ECU Flash has me putting 147 HP down thru the rear wheel.

Nice!! Yoshi can would be nice. I don’t mind the lack of screen, but I think that’s helped by the fact that I find the power enough as it is too! Just need the ECU flash to get rid of that excel cut nonsense!

The British bike magazine PERFORMANCE BIKES build a FZ-1N a couple of years back . It was a staff bike written by their mechanic, Mark Write. They tunes then suspention, fueling and put a aftermarket exhaust on it. Think they altered the final hearing as well. That thing went like a bat out of hell, and they made a long review of it comparing it to a Aprilia Tuono V4 which it was just as fast. All the acceleration tests the FZ-1N was just as fast as the Tuono, which in itself is quite an accomplishment! So what I'm trying to say here is that the FZ-1 have a monster inside just a tweak away from getting out, and that weak low end gan be fixed! Anyway, good luck to you on search for a new bike 😁

I had a 2012 FZ1 (faired version as seen in my avatar). It was amazing, they fixed the fuel injection mapping and yeah 90mph in first gear is insane. I found it poor on mpg though as I used to commute on it, but then it's not really a commuter. Problem was it was just so powerful that I rarely used it to it's potential, traded it in for a Street Triple R and never looked back.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 6 жыл бұрын
I was very impressed. TBH the snatchy throttle seemed no worse than what I felt on the Tracer 900. It's a bike I could see being a lot of fun! And I'm not so worried about MPG and practicality as I was when I first came over to Germanialand.

I have a 2011 Versys with a tall after market Givi screen and the stock screen. After trying both screens in every position I ride with no screen because it's smoother and quieter about my helmet. I'm 6'2" / 188cm

I think some strange quirk of the pre 2009 model makes it noisy even without a screen. I was a little defeated the day I discovered that. But so much to be said for clean air. I just have to hit the weights to prepare my upper body for the wind onslaught!

How is it compared to your Versys? I have a Versys 1000 and currently thinking about purchasing a FZ1. First time buying a Naked and the wind difference was very uncomforatble for me. Do you get used to that? Is it a bike that I could still do a 300km tour with comfort? Or will I end up parking it because it is drains me after every ride? Thanks for your answer!
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam Жыл бұрын
Compared to a V1000 it’ll be very similar in terms of engine. But you’ll definitely feel a tiny bit more cramped (though i was surprised how roomy it was, compared to how it looks). The wind protection thing will be an issue if you spend a lot of time on the motorway or the wrong side of the limit. In the twisties, it was never an issue though. Also meant I didnt get as hot when the weather was good!!

How was it with that peak on your lid? Also, the KZbin encoding has done a right number on the road, its managed to accurately recreate the roads from the first gran tourismo.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 6 жыл бұрын
Weirdly, it was OK. On the Versys, the wind from the screen shoots upwards and catches the peak. On the naked, it seemd to be less of an issue. Clean air for the win! Though I did have to move the peak to it's highest position as I was leaning so much further forward!

Nice bike and thanks for the video, OCDAMC. :D Although I'm still just getting back into biking with my 2009 Versys 650, and loving it, warts and all, I do constantly look at other bikes and the things I'm considering once I'm grown up ;) are: -The BMW F800R. One can get them at reasonable prices and they seem to be really nice bikes, much nicer than the GS hordes. -The FZ8, either the naked or the faired version, preferably the faired one, I think. Seems a bit more manageable than the FZ1 -The FZ6 S2, i.e the one after they redid the ECU mapping to make it smoother. Only has 6KW less than the FZ8, too -The Suzuki GSR-750, a nice little hooligan machine. TBH, though, in a city, big bikes are a pain. Yamaha is certainly on the right path with the MT7 and MT9 and their Tracer brethren, and the Triumph Street Triples are godly as well.

The most accurate statement I've heard in regards to the BMW F800 family "this motor is the most boring way to produce 85hp there is".
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 6 жыл бұрын
I think we bikers are ALWAYS looking at what could come next! I looked at the FZ8 too. I don't 'need' the power of the FZ1, but read of many folks buying an FZ8 and then spending thousands upgrading the suspension to make it ride like an FZ1! So considering the closest FZ8 was already 2 grand more... In the slow stuff, the FZ1 actually feels just as light, if not lighter than my Versys. FZ6 is a good shout too, but something about the styling doesn't work for me. Seems the Tank doesn't fit the frame!

I assume you've seen the Austrian Guy, Schaaf's channel and his pretty extreme exploits on a humble Honda CB500 up and down various mountain passes. Take a look at his video of him riding a F800R and why he likes it. To summarise: The F800R is viewed by the "real men" of the biking world as a ladies' bike, and he thinks that's great because it means it's easy to ride and handles well.

I have a 2010 ABS model, this bike IMO is one of the best bargain big bikes you can get, so much engine for much cheaper than what's on offer today. BTW what was the mileage on the bike? They're meant to get their valves done at 24k but that tick you hear could be what's known as the Yamaha tick which is a feature of their engines, my one was doing it from around 3k miles lol. Half the cat lives in the exhaust so when you swap it out it's quite a bit louder

The stock Versys windscreen is particularly awful. The noise is tolerable only because of earplugs, but the wind pressure on my upper chest is still bad. That is in the lowest position, in the top position the buffeting around the helmet is terrible. Looking at an aftermarket screen for mine. Fully naked bikes may be a bit quieter, but that wind pressure gets old quick on the highway.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 6 жыл бұрын
I agree. Upside down it's a bit less buffety, but still not good. I luckily don't spend much time on the motorways anymore and I need the upper body exercise too! :D

I hated the tall gears down low (mine was an FZ1 from 2011). Can't even idle slower than about 9mph in 1st. Hopeless for the necessary crawling along from time to time. Engine was sort of soft in the bottom end in comparison to the wail at the top. Could use a -1 front sprocket.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 6 жыл бұрын
As I said, don't really mind it. I've had no trouble in the traffic, just have to be smooth with throttle and clutch. Soft in the bottom also works for me as the roads here are always damp. So without traction control, a few less ponies at the bottom end could save my life!

I tried the FZ 800 ; felt like a 600 diversion - gutless, buzzy and no balls ; the FZ1n is in a completely different class / that R1 motor is .......... sublime ! And naked !!! That’s pure motorcycling - faired bikes encourage riding too fast for little feedback. Hit 125 mph on an FZ1n and you know you’re moving, on a faired sportsbike the experience is dulled. Horses for courses I guess, but I’m converted - it’s not about actual speed but the sensation of it.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 6 жыл бұрын
I totally agree Mark. That's a big part of why i got this bike. I wanted more power but i also wanted to REALLY know that i had it! If it's uncomfortable, then it's too fast! That and naked bikes just look cooler IMHO!

@markelmer9822 6 жыл бұрын
Andy Man Cam You’ve found a very special bike and one of Yamaha’s best kept secrets; I met a few “hard core” bikers a few years back and one had an FZ1n with a few mods - he’d had all the sports machines and loved his FZ. That made me feel really good after spending nearly £10 k on mine (new). I don’t use mine as much as I should; it’s mint and only done 6,800 miles (2012 model - Black) It has £2000 of extras on it (all Yamaha, except Akrapovic carbon can, dealer fitted accessories) It was a good deal back then as a stock bike was around £9400. They were expensive bikes new and maybe that’s why Yamaha discontinued them - I don’t think the MT10 is of the same build quality and a few people I’ve met complain about Yamaha’s declining build quality. No bike is perfect but every time I ride mine I feel comfortable, confident and in-control. It’s so well balanced and stable at speed - I’ve been in All weathers and it always inspires confidence. Great machines and future classics no doubt. 🤙ride safe.

Have you looked into sorting out the fuelling with TuneECU or similar?
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 6 жыл бұрын
Sadly TuneECU doesn't work for Yamahas. I looked at FTECU but it's insanely expensive considering you do everything completely without Dyno. Here in germany, a proper tune up and ECU flash is possible, but it has to be a certified tuner to remain road legal. Which means FAR more expensive than in the UK. So until I'm rich, I'm stuck with it!!

With that sexy single sided swingarm (which has the practical benefit of making chain adjustments a breeze).

I did think about those. But whereas the FZ1-N 'could' be persuaded to do touring, It seemed that all I was hearing about the CB 1000R was that it certainly could not!

yeah I can't deny that looks wise, it's got everything! I heard too much talk of impossible short range and uncomfortable for more than an hour.

So what did any of you fz1n owners do to fix the throttle issue? It’s def there...
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 жыл бұрын
I sadly never did fix it. But many have had good results from having the ECU remapped. Preferably by a professional with a Dyno!
@myaccount6905
@myaccount6905 3 жыл бұрын
AndyManCam yeah, I think it should be looked at by a professional. I think it gets more annoying in time.. it really is there... when you go through a corner... pick up the throttle... half a second nothing and then a jerk... thanks for the reply 👍

It's the single biggest reason why I decided to go for the Honda CB1000R. The FZ1 is amazing. But I was tired of hesitant throttling coming out of tight corners in the hills. Shame really. I could have saved 7000€ if I'd have been able to (legally) fix it!

It's not going to have a lot of pep in 4th gear doing 20 mph. I'm sure it has a lot more torque than that
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 5 жыл бұрын
No, of course not. But it’s a good way to exaggerate the weakness of the torque curve and see how smoothly it pulls.

Where the clutch grabs has nothing to do with the bike it has a adjustment to make it grab sooner not sure if you really know anything about a bike 🤨??
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 4 жыл бұрын
Where the clutch grabs is a combination of how worn the clutch plates are, strength of the springs, condition of the cable and the position of the adjuster. I know plenty about a bike thanks.

does he know that it is not allowed to split lanes in germany?:D i mean..i don't give a single fuck, because he does it safely, but he seems to care about all the other laws - not about that one. my guess is that he simply does not know..
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 жыл бұрын
He does. He also knows that it’s not actually a law that you can’t. It’s just that there‘s not a law that you can. Plus the ‚normal‘ people seem to be more bothered by it than the actual police.
