Low cost and simple way to long-life Valves. The Yamaha engine is that one from my Goggomobil. I want to reduce the service intervalls for adjusting the valves. Welding without handgloves just for this case to handle the camera.

That's how we have the modern ICE, not to long ago skilled technicians(like the man you see working here) would tear engines down in the paddocks, hit the ports with die grinder, changing profiles, or hammer a 2t pipe into a different shape...experimenting. Ever heard of Kevin Cameron? Yes, engines will be blown, but the next one will be better. And whomever is not willing to experiment and fail, to gain knowledge, will not contribute anything to the next generation.

That was fantastic to watch, thanks for documenting it. I'm amazed that the valve stems didn't warp while you were welding the valve!

Thats a lot of work to not have to do a bit of work every few years. That said, its exactly the kind of mod I love! it would handle a turbo better now I suspect.

there's no way you would catch me putting that back in my motor! I know valves arn't free but there cheaper than rebuilding the rest of the engine when that welded valve comes apart at 10 grand !

It is always nice to see old school machining, but if the engine was mine I'd have replaced the valves, guides and seats for new ones (I know that you still have to machine new ones to adjust them)

Just in case the OP doesn't respond: That seems like a very awkward way of raising static compression to me. The true and tested method of achieving higher compression is to use a thinner head gasket and/or machining down the mating surfaces of the head and cylinders. Another reason not to weld the valves would be weight. You want the valves to be as light as possible. Lastly, you will probably warp the valve stem using your mig/mag welder. I hope this info will help you in some way! Cheers!

correct me if im wrong. since motorcycle heads are designed to have the valves pound/ware into the head, for good reason at that. wouldn't the only way to increase valve adjust intervals be by hardening the valve seats! not the valve

DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO MOST OF THE IDIOTS WHO SAID NEGATIVE THINGS,i have installled new valves and had the heads pop off,tig welding is the strongest weld affordable,you have machine shop equipment use it,the rest of you buy new you must be bucks up,hotroding is fixing what you have at your task

nice pice of work, but i was thinking that a set of new valves for that and a good heat treating job could only cost about 200 to 250 $. i get trying to reduce service intervalls. but you have years of skills so im guessing your makeing a good buck at work. it may have been cheeper to just work a half a day. that being said it was a great video , be a good machinest that knows what he's doing. wish there was more of this on youtube!!!!

The nature of those grinding sparks indicate clearly the hardness of that metal deposit.But does hardening means that it can withstand higher temperatures and being able to lose heat by conduction to the stem? I wonder how the valve seating stands all this?

he is not raising the compression, that can only be done by making the combustion chamber smaller. his valve were damaged and he is repairing them and making them last longer in the process. the only solution for your kart for more power is a bigger displacement engine

I don't think you can make the valved harder. Theyt are already made of some of the hardest steel man can make. It looks like ruining the super-fine tolerances between the valves and heads to me. This cannot possibly yield superior results.

if this is a common occurrence due to lack of tappet clearance from valve face wear then yamaha needs to own it and revise the valve material used. Ive seen this type of engine design go well over 80K with no lash adjustment and not burn a valve. A set of one piece performance valves is cheap compared to a scattered engine due to a broken valve that was brittle from welding. Nice work but not worth the risk in my book.

cryogenic treated is top dog for hardening do youre bearings,rods,pistons,valves,and gearsets ,for $200 and it would be bulletproof like you see these guys who have treated standard engines to over 1000hp and next to no wear what so ever 1000+dyno runs at 40 psi boost and 3yrs later racing .

using the side of a grinding wheel not designed for such use is very dangerous. it also ruins the wheel. even so the lathe spindle speed is way too high as is the speed for lapping the valves in. although it may have worked it is very rough arsed and will potentially completely lunch the top end. good luck keeping it running

so what's the deal with this I assume you got it together and beat the snot out of it how about a 3 year update. I have 2 86 fazers and a 87 fzr 1000 that are getting up there in miles and I don't feel like dumping $300.00 on shims per engine or $30.00 per valve and on top of that the exhaust valves are not available new. I got all the tools available to me all I got to do is pick up some filler rod. is it worth it. I think so
@kennycresci9319
@kennycresci9319 9 жыл бұрын
spencer41188 You make it sound like having the tools, are all you would need to accomplish this. I've been doing motorcycle cylinder heads for 40 years, and I can tell you, that properly done valve jobs, (and the people who actually know how to do them) are few, and far between. Especially when dealing with 4 & 5 valve combustion chambers, and the 'tiny' valve stem diameters that they use. It doesn't matter if your working with a $40,000 seat cutting machine, or those goofy little 'NewWay' wrist twisters. It's not the tools, as much as knowing (in practice) how to use them. That comes with experience, and ((ONLY)) experience. Kenny @ KC Engineering San Francisco, Ca.

Kenny Cresci welding and engine machining is what i do its just i have never welded valves and machined them back to spec. i guess the questions i was trying to ask are: Did it cost you $1000.00 to do the valve job? and How is the engine doing after you've beat on it some?

That is the crudest work I've ever seen. It is very improper to lap the valves using methods that you are using. You must not have ever heard of interference angles? This means the seat is at 45 degrees and the valve face 44. The one degree difference makes for a knifes edge to seal on the face of the valve. All spring pressure focuses on one sharp edge. What you just did was make both angles the same. It will only seal for a short time. It will continually loose compression.

Also I saw you grinding on the stem of the valve. That is very wrong! You now have weakened the stem severely! I would be willing to bet it will drop the head of the valve in no time! While your methods may work on old farm equipment, I'd never ever attempt to do what you just showed! These engines are much more precise then this, and deserve to be treated as such.
