I have a 2006 Yamaha VMAX 250 hpdi that was having all kinds of throttle issues. I was able to trace it to the fact that it was in the mystery filters we're all clogged up. This video what's extremely helpful and allowing me to change out those filters on my boat engine. I am very proud to announce that my engine is back up and running at full potential now.

Thanks for this video. I just brought my first bass boat. Skeeter zx225 with the same motor. I pick it up on the 27th and plan on doing all the yearly maintenance myself so I needed this. Thanks again. Subscribed

How do you do your engine oil change ? I don’t see your engine has oil filter.

Great video! Did you have to relive the fuel pressure before disconnecting the fuel lines that go from the fuel pump to the fuel rail?
@WillCory Жыл бұрын
Yes there is port that you're able to do so.

How’s this engine running today? The HDPI has a bad reputation on THT. Some of you guys getting 1000+ hours out of them need to make a video of how you’re keeping them up. I hear they run lean and blow pistons. I’m interested in buying one and replacing the powerhead but I’m hesitant. How many hours do you have on this one?
@WillCory3 жыл бұрын
Yep I ened up buring up a piston last summer my motor only had 273 hrs on it but im thinking my injectors are at fault or 1 injector.

I did the same on my boat after watching this and trying to call myself finished. Couple of questions? What are the torque specs on the fuel rail bolts, high pressure line bolts and the High pressure pump? I tried to estimate it by adjusting the torque wrench higher and higher as I unscrewed them until they broke free...seemed to be varying between 12ft./lbs and 16. The second question (harder to explain in writing), when I pulled apart the top left High pressure pump only one of the two inset holes seen in your video (on the back half) was open for me to replace the filter. The other inset hole still had an extended insert that fits into the front side. In your video both inset holes were visible for replacing the filter. Does the extension that couples the front side and the back side just pull out? Super video and thanks...saved me the aggravation of going to the dealer again, trying to keep this HPDI running..the previous owner let it sit for 10 years and she has been a bear getting back up and running, even with just 30 hours on her.

thanks for watching. Im not to picky with the tq specs as most bolts on this motor are in the 12-20 lbs range and having a automotive background I kinda have a feel for how tight after taking them off so many times. I prolly should buy a manual though. I know on some the these pumps they are fitted different for some reason. I was told by a old yamaha tech if see a hole with a filter in it change it out otherwise not to mess with anything else. Send me over a pics so i seewaht your describing to my email. Almost a year my motor ended up burning up a piston so im installing a new powerhead now and I'll have some videos on that process. Run good quality gas and try not to idle for long periods of time I think thats what hurt my motor.

@@WillCory OUCH! I've built race cars and restored old muscle cars for over 30 years. Not sure why boats don't have in-tank pumps to simplify the whole fuel system and don't get me started with the High pressure pumps...that's really not necessary to get HP and fuel efficiency. BTW, I went to the Holley EFI programming classes and can program fuel management systems, too bad I can't influence Yamaha or other DI manufactures that if they want to build something like this with such tight tolerances, they need to Ox sensors on each exhaust port to make sure motors don't get burnt up. Their sensor measures all at the same time and if you have a clogged injector or filter, the computer just sends more fuel to the other injectors to compensate and try to keep the Ox/Fuel burn rate at the same level. Plus, whose bright idea was it to turn off 3 cylinders while idling...that's just a recipe for burning up a motor right there. Anyway, thanks. I've already got mine back together so shooting some pictures is out for now. I don't want to take a chance at damaging the o-rings in the pumps. Good luck with your rebuilt...my next motor will not be a HPDI motor, that's for sure. I can work on them with no problem and know them now, but, Yamaha loves their parts. I used to have a 1990 ProV200, the first year it came out...carbs...that thing is still running and the only thing that's had to be done on it was changing plugs and rebuild the carbs one time... oh, and the normal about every 3rd or 4th year, change the lower unit oil and water pump impellers. Good luck my friend and thank you for posting...I wish I had the patience and courage to do that.

I just cleaned out my O2 sensor and it's corresponding mounting block and sniffer tube. It was CAKED with carbon, causing the motor to run rich and fouling my plugs. It made a huge difference in keeping my plugs clean, and engine running consistently great.
@WillCory3 жыл бұрын
hpdi doesnt have o2 sensor but just make sure run the ring free additive in your gas and stay on top of your filter changes

Hey there Will. I'm a new sub. I've been watchin your maintenance vids cuz my boat is in dire need of it now. I own a 2005 Ranger Z21 Comanche with a Yamaha Vmax 250HP HPDI 2 STROKE. My boat has been sitting in my shop for almost 4 years...I haven't been able to fish due to personal family issues. But now my wife and I are planning a fishin therapy vacation after the 4th. Will all the parts I saw you use to replace the fuel filter and VST deal, and the fuel injectors along with the mystery filters work on my 2005 250 HPDI? I would really appreciate your help and advise. I am not very mechanically inclined and have been unemployed for 10 months, and can't afford to bring it in to my dealer for service. I've already bought the mystery filters on Amazon, but the fuel filter and oil filter I bought are the wrong parts!!! Please help? Thanks! 👊 PS...why are they called "Mystery Filters" anyway? Do they improve performance or something? I have no clue.
@WillCory4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for checking out the video! Yep the parts will work for your motor but since yours has been sitting for some time might need to clean out the vst tank, fuel tanks, fuel lines and make sure your pump is gummed up with old fuel. I used oem yamaha parts but you can use sierra marine for a cheaper alternative. They call them the "mystery" filters because they are kind of hidden in places you dont expect tiny filters to be. Let me know if there is anything else I can help ya with.

@@WillCory Right on man! Thank you for getting back to me and for the info. When I see that little green fuel filter you have amongst your parts before you start working, every one of those that I have found on Amazon is for a 4 stroke? Will it also work on my 2 stroke? If so can you please give me the link to that GREEN filter? Same with that metal inline filter? That thing is like $81 on Amazon. I'll by whatever I need, I've saved a bit of cash, I'm just not certain? I also don't get why it says "people who bought this item also buy these 3 parts at the same time"? For instance, what is the propeller doing there in the Amazon pic next to a drive belt and Yamalube can of whatever? Why would I need that if I'm just changing filters? What year is your Yami? I'M SORRY I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS. THANKS!
