The Yamaha HS5 powered Studio Monitors and the Yamaha HS8S powered sub-woofer are a serious combination. They offer a level of truth in listening that is invaluable in music creation, mixing and an out right pleasurable listening experience. Having moved into a space where I’d like control over the amount of bass and the amount clarity I was happy to try out the Yamaha HS5 powered Studio Monitors and the Yamaha HS8S powered sub-woofer.

The Yamaha HS series of speakers are like that best friend who tells you how it is, not like a yes man who flatters you and tells you what you wanna hear. I have HS5s and am thinking of getting the HS8S to get myself some bass!

This was helpful to me... first place I found where it made it clear keyboard output goes FIRST to subwoofer input, THEN subwoofer outputs to speakers/monitors... I didn't know that!

@BBoy - That was a good review bro. I've been using Yamaha studio monitors for years and it is good to hear someone else's opinion on the monitors. I also like the fact that you said if you don't like the product you're testing, you will give YOUR honest OPINION no bs. I just subscribed to your channel to hear your other reviews.

If all you're producing or mixing is dance music, hip hop, etc., techno, you want a setup that's tailored to that, preferably with one huge sub., or two powered subs with crossovers. Yamahas are more all-around pro. studio monitors for all kinds of music/mixing. Same with the JBLs, or even more high-end near-field monitors. But you won't get enough bass with 'em without a good powered subwoofer.

Naw bro, if you're mixing r&b or hip hop, a sub with these is definitely not a bad idea. I've have the hs8's for 8 years now and I can testify. That said, I've mixed complete records or 1 mix cube in mono, and I've mixed records with iPhone headphones plugged into my MacBook, so you can get use to anything and get results lol.

I have the HS5s and the Rokit6s. I kept my Rokit6s turned off for a month and mixed only in the HS5s. What I noticed when I A/B'd to the Rokit6's, I was boosting my lower mid range a little too much with the HS5s. They're definitely not suited for mixing lows, that's for DAMN sure. But they are EXCELLENT on the top end. Something I don't get with the Rokits.

I know this is an old-ish video, so it probably won't matter to the poster [Thanks for posting, regardless!], but for everyone else, if you're going to go with multiple sets of monitors, I don't think it really pays to go with two sets as relatively similar as Rokit and HS monitors. In this case, something like the HS set (with a subwoofer) and Avantone Mix Cubes or headphones or whatever would be more useful. The car monitoring thing is great, but A.) you might not have the time/patience to bounce everything down and transport it, and B.) headphones (even earbuds!) are going to REALLY give you a different perspective being super small drivers. Get things sounding as good as they possibly can in their native mix, period, then just check to make sure they still sound good when their VARIOUS future playback sources AREN'T good~shrug~

Hello bro. Do you recommend the Yamaha h5 as a box for listening to music? I am not interested in audio monitoring at the moment, but if I do in the future, I can purchase the second box. I found the h5 more interesting with only one box due to the power provided compared to some other types like edifer that close the price, the range power offer is similar and don't give such a faithful sound. NOTE: I live in an apartment and I play the guitar with a 7w mini katana that have more power than enough for me. In other words, I don't need a high-powered box. Thanks.

For those wondering if you need the subwoofer with the HS8 pair it depends on what you’re mixing. I mix web series and short films, mostly narratives so I need the HS8 yo hear the low rumbles, cinematic bass drops and stuff like that. Ask yourself do you need to hear sounds that low in your mix.

The HS8+HS8S is overkill but makes for a great experience. I mix/master with the HS8's and have the HS8S subwoofer for fun and games. I tend to like to listen to the final product on multiple different setups to get an overall feel for how the mix fits into different coloured sound systems. TL:DR you mostly DO NOT need the sub if you use the HS8's. But the sub is definitely a good purchase if you want bas :p
@xmus4023
@xmus4023 3 жыл бұрын
I use the HS5's for my final mixdown analysis without a complimentary subwoofer. I'd say that even though the cutoff on the subs around 175hz-200hz is pretty noticeable on the monitors alone, you should be able to mix near perfectly without a complimentary sub and decent room treatment. It is all about training the ears, and these really do make that step of the process easy.

6 months late here but if you have HS8 speakers you dont need a subwoofer but the low frequency really drops off hard around 35hz. The HS7 (6.5") or HS5 get a sub. A subwoofer will fatten up the bottom end really well, I suggest having a sub even with the HS8 but you dont NEED them.
