This is NOT jumbo sized! It is a dreadnaught. I have one and also an LL16D 6 string. They are what yamaha term a "modified dreadnaught". The LJ is a jumbo, but I dont think it comes in a 12 string. Nice review and playing though. Thanks.

Now I'm looking for something economical to see if i like playing 12's first before moving up . Loved dead or alive on the LL12. Even the tunes i did not know . Yamaha should pay you for this review ... it was impressive .... the guitar and the playing . Loved the arpeggio as well .

Decided to get one a few months ago. Changed out plastic pins with ebony, and D'Addario 12-52 medium strings but detuned D to D. What a sound. Plays easier after struggling with the thinner 10-48 strings. I'm hooked, again.
@LostPlectrum8 ай бұрын
Wow, 12-52 strings on a 12? That's a lot! Did you detune what to D? I have always used extra light strings on this, actually I should try heavier ones...
@quigley44408 ай бұрын
Yes detuned D to D. The projection and sound is much greater and will stick with these. With capo 1st or 2nd fret strings stay tight and don't flop like the lighter variety. Actually easier to barre chord and top E,B strings have fuller tone further up the neck. Also replaced the Tusq pins with ebony. Smoother tone now with slight reduction in the jangle which I prefer. With your advanced playing ability you may want to look at the Santa Cruz guitar strings which are made to EQ balance across the strings instead of by gauge thickness. Demo videos I hear quite the difference to the harmonics . I will be trying these for the 12 and 6 string.@@LostPlectrum

I have the LL16 6 string. I change the pins with tusq and it changed the sound dramatically for the better. Decided to change the saddle to tusq and again an improvement in sustain and harmonics really came out. Eventually changed the nut to tusq and not much difference there exept to balance the system. The cheapest upgrade and it will make the LL16 sound like the LL26. Pins made the biggest difference.

Love Yamaha guitars - have LL16 6 string and replaced all plastic parts with tusq - inredible difference. There's nothing like strumming on a 12 strings with fresh strings, the tones and sustain and volumes are just awesome. But it's indeed a very special type of guitar that doesn't fit everything and everyone. Hope you will like it!

@@LostPlectrum Playing the FS820-12 is a dream. No really issues and have decided a 12 string is a must. This guitar and the LLmodel are very similar in size with the LL just a bit wider in the body. The 820 is already opening up and sounds great for the money. I know the LL will kill it in sound quality, so ordering one. I have an LL16 - 6 string and also changed pins, saddle and nut with tusq. Alberto, fine name. There are seven generations of that name in my family. Great playing and sounding guitar. I have two A3R's, natural and tobacco burst. Be honest, please. How is the action? That one can still purchase a guitar with all solid woods, a 12 string no less, is why I bought the other two Yamaha's.
@LostPlectrum Жыл бұрын
Thank you Kevin. If you mean the action on the 12 strings, well it was quite low at the beginning and it has increased slightly across the years. When the guitar was 18 years old I refretted it and the luthier cut a new nut and also a new saddle, he therefore lowered a bit the action. Even when it was somewhat high, it was never "unplayable" though, right now it is a very comfortable 12 strings.

The 1 11/16 nut is the only problem with this guitar. It’s too narrow for finger style. I’m thinking about buying one anyway - and seeing if it will take a 1 7/8 nut replacement.
@LostPlectrum5 ай бұрын
Finger style in a 12 strings will remain a challenge, you need real good right hand technique. I personally think it's more linked to how close the couples of strings are. There are 12 strings where the "twin strings", for example the double high e, are very much far away from each other. At the bridge this will result in an almost evenly spaced string to string, which make it impossible for finger style. Other 12 strings are built with more quality and the twin strings remain very close to each other without buzzing issue. A much better situation. I love this guitar also for this reason

Great video, great sound, and great playing! What do you think of the pickup on this guitar, does it sound like a typical piezo pickup (quacky, not natural), or does it sound more like a natural acoustic guitar? I'm trying to decide between a Taylor 256ce and a Yamaha LL-16-12, and a lot of it is going to come down to how the pickups sound. Taylors have a nice natural acoustic sound with the Expression System 2, I've seen a few demos of the LL-16-12 but none using the pickup. There aren't any stores near me that have both in stock, so I'll have to buy a bit blind through Sweetwater.....
@LostPlectrum2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Josh! I cannot answer your question because my LL1612 is a quite old one and it doesn't carry any amplification system, so it has not any piezo in the bridge. And I don't know what they are installing nowadays on these? Do you know which system are they using? To me anyway, a piezo is always on the harsh/brittle/metallic/dry side of the tone, I have yet to find a good one. I have better experience with systems with piezo and condenser mic, those usually give a more natural response.
@YpsiJoshmccullough2 жыл бұрын
@@LostPlectrum Yamaha is using their SRT Zero Impact passive piezo, which they say isn't as piezo-sounding and is more natural-sounding than normal piezos. Thanks for the reply!

I have a more modern one with pickup, and I think it sounds beautiful. It is a passive pickup with no onboard eq, so you just use your amp or p.a. for eq. I think the pickup system sounds very good.
