Dom Sigalas gives us a look through and demo of the new Yamaha MODX synthesizer. The MODX offers the same sound engine as the Montage and many of the flagship model features at a fraction of the price.

can you search for songs/sequences while the current song is playing? or do i have to stop the song, then search for another song? my older sampler/sequencers all let me search and que up the next song while the current song is playing. saves time between songs on stage.

The specification is clear that the MODX and Montage are fully compatible with software as they sue exactly the same sound engine and as long as any required samples do not exceed the 1Gb limit of the flash in the MODX. They do have their own file extensions but ultimately the software works on both items. We do have to test ourselves yet the full nature of this compatibility as sometimes we do come across oddball issues. so as of this second I would say yes - it is compatible. Bear in mind the converters in the MODX are not quite as good as the Montage so if you sit them side by side the Montage sounds richer even though the sounds themselves are ultimately the same. There is also a smaller limit on the SSS switching of 4 parts limit as opposed to 8 in the Montage.

It has 128 notes of polyphony, not 192 and for FM engine 64 only but Montage has 128/128. 192 is the Montage sample rate (192Khz), MODX has 44 Khz.

MODX does not have a sampler. 192Khz refers to the maximum sampling rate for Montage's sampler.

@@sallami6627 I have never said MODX had a sampler. I referred to the tone generator/ sound card specification. Any sound card doesn't matter if it is in a keyboard or inside your laptop, has quantization (16/24/32 bits) and sample rate (44/96/192/384 KHz) specification. Montage has 192KHz, MODX doesn't! ps: What is not to be confused with polyphony, what actually was the mistake I pointed out.

We supply all our MODX with the Bosendorfer library on USB along with a range of other libraries, but if it was not from us then you will need to download the Imperial Grand from yamahamusicsoft.com

It's called CFX & Orch and it's one of the stock sounds. The Super Knob brings in more of the orchestra amongst other things :) Hope this helps!

I have seen a bunch of demo's and it sounds really, really nice. But I can't but feel there is so much empty space on that top panel =/ That could have had more direct controls like dials or sliders. Touch screens are cool, but not quite a nice to use as a physical control imo.

That empty space is where the MODX is ………. saving expenses to give it a lower price. I've listened to both - you won't notice the difference between this and the Montage. I'm buying the MODX6

Not quite the same thing. The Havian is a more digital piano with an arranger section although it has the synth engine of the Korg PA300. The MODX is a synth. If you need styles, go for the Havian. If you’re more I to sound design, go for the MODX. If you are a piano player, it is worth to note that you can upload a high quality sample of the Bösendorfer which is found in the higher-end Clavinovas in the MODX. By all means, go into a music shop and try both keyboards. Also, be aware that the Korg Havian 30 is several years old already. Soundwise, the MODX is better, but the Havian will be easier to play out of the box.

I get it but that dial can be assigned to MULTIPLE parameters. Tough to do with a foot switch. "The Super Knob allows simultaneous control of up to 128 parameters in a single Performance. This means you can control nearly anything from mix functions like volume, pan and effect sends to detailed synth parameters like filters, LFOs and Operators. That’ s 128 parameters…SIMULTANEOUSLY! Yes and no.... If you are looking for a "workstation", or at the all around total capability, the Kronos is still the king of the mountain. If you are looking for straight sound creation possibilities for playing live , the Montage/MODX are both outstanding choices, that would easily hold their own against the Kronos. If I had to choose only one, I would probably go with the Kronos, just because it's a "All-in-one" synth that by itself could do just about anything I would ever need, but If I had the chance to add a Montage or a MODX to my current setup I wouldn't hesitate - it would fit nicely with the synths I already have...

Nah, I get it man, I have an MP7 and must admit it is inspiring to play and FEELS fantastic.....but lugging it around gets old and it's secondary sounds are not so good -(as is with MOST great playing stage pianos btw). I'm going with this for a while for sure (with a KronosX-61 2nd tier), but then my role is more of an arranger and backing keys/sounds with our band.

Yea I traded in the MP7se for this at guitar center that’s probably why it felt so horrible because that action is great. I love Yamaha action on most things like motif and S90 pianos so I was thinking that it was gonna be something like that and it just wasn’t. @@RayyMusik The $999 Korg Krome 61 borrows the German Grand Sample from the Kronos. It doesn't make it a Kronos. This is basically a more affordable cheap plastic watered down version of the Montage. This should be competitively priced at $999 for 61key. This board is targeted at an entry level hobbyist. Here in the USA I have had Guitar Center offer a new in box Montage61 for $2150. I turned it down. But I'm telling you so that if you want a Montage. $2150 May be possible depending on the time of year. Good luck ;)

The only thing that is not Android compatible is plugin it directly into your phone to use as a soundcard. Pretty much something you are highly unlikely to do to start with. You can connect it to your PC and use any DAW of your liking. I really don't see the issue here. You are in no way limited in using the synth if you don't have a iPad.
