In this tutorial I show you how to download, convert and import YAMAHA DX7, DX7II, TX801, TX816 legacy FM presets into the YAMAHA MODX and YAMAHA MONTAGE synthesizer workstations. We'll discuss how to process the SYSEX files using YAMAHA FM CONVERTER into a library file that can be loaded into the MODX and MONTAGE. Once installed you can enjoy the FM presets again, but with the effects and synth processing power of the modern synth.

An old trick from the road. If the DX7 patches sound "thin" to your 2020 ears, layer the included OB Soft patch as a nice background pad. It has attack which beefs up FM EPs ever so nicely. Set the Release to taste. It's a standard Yamaha patch included on the MODX and the MOXF and used for decades by keyboard players. Enjoy!

Just got my MODX7+ and this worked for me. The converter web page was there. The sounds are good but the mod wheel and super knob don't change anything on most patches, probably because most are single performances.

Web midi is feature on the reface keyboards too, I remember using to get some patches from the Yamaha Soundmondo page to get some reface DX patches.

The Korg Kronos imports DX7 sysex without conversion and 99% of the Program(me)s sound the same as on the original. A notable exception is that bass patch you played with your left hand on the Mk 1 at the beginning of the video. Fortunately, I had sampled that one (and others) off my old DX7. It is nice to see those patches still in use 30+ years on. They really come alive on the Kronos when you layer / detune them and add suitable effects.

By “default filter” I think Woody meant “bit crusher” effect, at least if you want to be really authentic, lol. I like that you can filter the FM stuff at all, though. I guess the old SY 77/99 boards did that too? From what I have seen the Elektron Digitone groove box (as an another example of newer gear that also uses FM) uses a similar FM + filter hybrid to get some really sweet sounds.

nope, it doesn't have the FM synth engine, you'll need the serious MONTAGE or MODX synthesizer for that

Hi Woody, it's funny to see we need an external FM converter to load DX7 sounds in Yamaha synth while nothing is needed to load them in Korg Kronos (or Nautilus). Kronos does import DX7 sysex files directly!

@@WoodyPianoShack I think I figured it out......lol When I selected files I grabbed all of them when I should have only taken the syx files.(for each cart) I just deleted the initial files with all the duplicates and loaded the syx files only. Hi Woody! Got myself a MODX6, loaded the default banks per your instructions, but my patches don't seem to have velocity taken into account. I never played on a real DX7 but I think it had velocity sensors. Is there something to enable this, in synth or around the conversion process? I found a good deal on the DX7S, but I clearly prefer the mellow warmth of the DX7. It can be done, yes? I suspect the DX7S still wouldn't sound quite the same, but .... Any advice in this matter?

Woody Piano Shack thanks. Good FM keyboards are hard to find. My Reface DX is a pretty limited board. Wanting something just a bit more. The Digitone Keys is also limited, and expensive , though it is polytimbral and has aftertouch and VA style filters, as well as the sequencer. The MODX has a keyboard some online say is a bit off (sure, that’s part of the Montage upgrade...), as well as a panel that switches me mentally from “play” mode to “debug” mode, despite over 30 years working as a computer programmer. I’m interested to see how the YC series balances features, accessibility for the price between the Montage and MODX. This is an expensive hobby 😁

Off topic - any chance you may get your hands on a new YC61 to demo? Yamaha is saying they’re going to be released around May, which is a ways off (frowny face). While they look like great boards, none of the existing demos are very in depth. They are designed to market the keyboard, rather than show all its sounds and capabilities.

Yamaha does make an app, FM Essentials, that runs on iOS to layer FM with the MXs, though. Pick up a refurbished iPhone SE for about USD 150 if you don’t have such? Or just run any other app like KQ Dixie at that point I guess. FWIW, KQDixie reads syx files, like the library that comes with Dexed.

You may check out chicken systems software. Its not cheap but it is able to convert between a ton of formats as long as they arent encrypted. which means, no you can't convert comercial sound libraries from one brand to another. as they are always encrypted. But free samples and your own created ones can be converted from any supported formats. There is a cheaper option called Extrem Sample Converter. It's not updated for several years but it has the same functions but unfortunately nothing newer than yamaha tyros format, but can save in tons of formats like .wav which you might be able to import into the yamaha Sound editor program. It was usefull for me as the Kronos do support Soundfont single patch load. ESC also have an imo better autosampler than the others out there, and it can autosample from any VST2 Plugins in a matter of seconds or normal sampling from an external synth by sending midi notes to the connected synth and sample it. Just have det how long you wanna sample and at what rate and create a grid of which notes you wanna sample and how many layers. Very easy to work with. And it also have a fairly good auto looper for shorter samples or pad sounds. But if your a Montage user you can get this for free : kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4eZaWqXbc6BiJo It only supports export for the Montage. If you want other formats have to buy the full software.

Thank you for all these videos, really enjoying them. I would like to ask a question please. I'm an old guy 66 and just decided to try and learn keyboard. I tried piano as a child but quit because the old girl teacher would wrap my knuckles with a wooden ruler when I messed up. 😟 Anyway I purchased an old Yamaha PSR450E. It works OK just wondering if you have an opinion on this model. What I find on KZbin is actually pathetic and painful to watch. My ultimate goal is a Montage or Tyros/Genos All this depends on how far I get and if I can justify the outlay versus my skills. Thanks. God bless from Canada

Woody Piano Shack Thank you for the quick reply. Yeah it works fine and gets my fingers loosened up. The preset sounds aren't to bad, the grand piano is pretty fat not to bassy not to bright. Overall can't complain for the price. What I have learned in life is you can't compensate on sound and that for me has always pointed me to Yamaha. Casio and the like don't seem to have it, but others I'm sure will have their own opinions on that. Cheers M8🍻

Roland Gerard one weird limitation on the volca: it ignores velocity input. It has a number of hardware knobs, though, for expression. Don’t have one, just what I’ve seen.

it has most of the good ones, but they have been tweaked. if you want the real originals then follow this method. and remember, tens of thousands of patches were made for the dx7.

@@talkboxerr4463 Yes, and the Dx-7 was a flagship but you would think after all these years of technological advances since that come out in the early 80's would be considered standard equipment by now. But I realize in the Keyboard world that isn't always the case.

Modx dose indeed have aftertouch and if you connect a keyboard with aftertouch you will be able to use it. The key bed doesn't have it but the tone generator responds to aftertouch.
