Another great video on the MODx. For song creators yes, this is the sequencing we like to do, playing our swings, rests, rhythms straight in on the keyboard with the timing we have in our head. Step sequencing is very difficult because we have to go back and edit, a very lengthy and frustrating process when we know we could just play it in. This is the way I sequenced in the 1980s and 1990's with hardware sequences, it was fun and very fast to build a song....though controlling loops was not possible back then, so all you could do is a linear song. (yes all this can be done on a computer, but I don't use computers anymore for making music. Hundreds of reasons why).

Thank you for your tutorial. I rmember watching you some while ago and learning from you. I did indeed manage to make my own pattern sequence, however there is a pretty big problem with all of this, and i'm sure you have come across this yourself. It is indeed a great idea to be able to record your own sequences, which I have done, not only with this machine but others too. This one is a tad more complicated even when you know exactly how to do it. Straight away the problem comes up where I have to link the pattern with the performance name, and no matter how many times anyone tries this, somewhere down the line they are going to get really frustrated and lose all of there work. The performance name is no problem, but then you link it to a pattern, 1 is already filled, so is 2, pattern 3 is completely empty, however when you try to link it decides to choose pattern 10 and not 3 or 4,5,6,7,8 or even 9, they get completely missed and possibly wasted which is something we don't want as we only have limited spaces. While I was frustratingly trying to place something into pattern 3, just as you did, I forgot to link and somehow lost my pattern inside the machine somewhere, when I did find it, it was maybe in position 10 again. The Roland FA06 is much staright forward in doing this and so much quicker too as are some of my other Keyboard/Synths. In order to record just one simple part on one track for a few seconds you have to go through many unessesary parameters and settings, if you accidentally forget just one then you are left scratching your head trying to fathom out at what point you madethe mistake. The Idea of a sequencer is really to get your ideas down quickly, in yet the MODX has come up with something that completely slows you down leaving you a little stressed and frustrated to the point of giving up or maybe using a completely different Synth altogether. This is not your fault I know and I can see that you have done a lot of hard work here, but I do wonder why Yamaha have made something that is prone to you making mistakes, especially when we have already learnt how to use something over and over and just simply want to make music and not spending most of that time programming. Anyhow, well done for the Tutorial and once again thank you. Best Wishes Geoff

exactly my thoughts. on my quest to a decent keyboard with really quick multitrack recording to store ideas and flesh them out a bit before transferring to DAW I've come across the yamaha system (QY70, QY700, now MODX) and can't believe how frustratingly inefficient this system works, unchanged since the 90ies.

This is the problem i did struggle with as well.. changing patterns .. what i dont understand is. Yamaha only added this sequencer due to huge amount of customer requests, so they obviously didnt want to add one at first, as they are trying to push Cubase ... so Why make this messy confusion of a sequencer, why didnt Yamaha just use an updated version of the Motif XF sequencer

Great tutorial and made me update to 2.0! Btw, if I want to start my recording on bars 5-8, I notice it will apply my "pattern" to bars 1-4 automatically when in overdub mode. Is there a way to prevent this? This seems to happen when I want to go back and add a high hat over my drums in overdub mode, but only apply the high hat for bars 5-8. It will always add the high hat to bars 1-4 for some reason

No linear track view? Pattern-based only? Might as well keep my Fantom 06(since I have multiple types of synthesis, sampling & more physical controls.) The MODX has a superb FM engine & a large display...but that's all there is good to say about that keyboard. I am a previous owner of the MODX7 and the build quality is flimsy, no WAV exporting & Cubase is the most counter-intuitive software out there.

Seems overly complicated just to create a song. Way too much menu diving. The Recording sequencer on the Motif is much more straight forward. This seems like a Sequencer that’s “after the fact” or an “afterthought” of the production of the Modx. Kinda lame.

I'm using a Yamaha DJ x great machine but it's not got a sequencer it haves a function for recording over six different channels which it's handy you can make some killer tracks on it but have to hand play every thing...if it had a sequencer it would be a great work station

So... there is no visual representation of the sequencer whatsoever? Like a piano roll, or something? On a colorful decently-sized touchscreen? I'm not even talking about an interactive piano roll (though Akai showed with their MPC Live that a piano roll on a touchscreen is nice and intuitive), but just a way to see what you recorded, what you're editing in the menus, what you're copying, what swing and quantization are doing, etc. Quite dumb imo. (Still powerful and great sounding, but that interface... just no.)

That's a shame, 'cause in that case I think sequencing it on Digitakt or in a DAW would be just... more intuitive. But that may just be because I'm not really into live recording. But then again, what if you *do* live record, but you play one note wrong or something. Is there even a tool on the MODX that would let you fix that, or do you have to delete the sequence (or at least part of it) and try again? Either way, visually selecting the step/note you want to tweak and tweaking it would be far quicker and intuitive.

Definitely it’s so awful sequencer. A 3 k dollars machine and I can’t enjoy this part of my workflow. It’s a creativity killer... My Korg Tr was 1000x better on that... really disappointed!

To be fair the only decent hardware sequencer is the MPC from Akai and even that required JJ to Jack it to make it work, Korgs sequencer still hasn’t changed a great deal since the Triton either, but at the end of the day they are all better than screaming at a pc while it crackles and pops running native instruments software synths. It records it quantises what more do you want for crying out loud for making porn music haha.

David Bentz Jr. I have been using music tech for over 25 years I am fully aware of crackle and pops and what causes them, Professionals get the job done with the tools present or move on, an fa 06 is a cheap workstation they are all just tools, so it’s a case of get on with it or get a job stacking shelves.

@@Dbentzjr I would say sequencer on Roland FA series is quite easy - I was able to use it without reading the manual (though I've learned more stuff later, by watching YT videos). I also have experience with the Yamaha sequencer, and this one was really hard, I didn't know how to record sequences at all! BUT after reading the manual and some practice, I now think that Yamaha sequencer is faster to use than Roland's one - it requires almost 2x more clicks when using Roland to do the same thing as on Yamaha.

I was so put off by the idea of creating a song in different parts (scenes) and pushing buttons to move between them but now that I see it's possible to create a chain of these scenes and then play the scene, that changes my whole opinion. I'm supposing it's possible to include a scene several times in a chain, ex verse, chorus, verse, chorus etc.....

Oh. It didn't have a sequencer until now? ;) Judging from your video, it's quite capable, but also has a user interface which totally gets in your way. Which is kind of ironic, because "workstation synths" were meant to be the center of your studio, an alternative to using a DAW. Yet, I don't know any workstation which has a really great sequencer. (The MODX does sound great and has a lot of other things going for it). Anyway, thanks for this video, Bo. Great music and great presentation, as always.

@@BoBeats Didn't use any Akai Pro device, but I think that all their most recent gear also has good Ux. They provide *piano-roll* mode sequencer, If I well remember . Waiting for a company that will produce a *piano-roll* style hardware sequencer. One-purpose device. A big touch screen, some hw control and that's it. ( no computer mess and no Squarp pyramid super complicated workflow / narrow screen. ) =)

i see this not as a sequencer, but not more or less as a simple recorder. There is no possiblity to edit steps. I have a modx and made my experiences with this so called sequencer. Its a recorder.

If you're familiar with previous Yamaha pattern sequencers, this makes more sense. I've found it faster than korg's for most things. Detailed editing is the pain though

This fixes the one thing I thought was missing from the original version. It seems like a very nice update. Could certainly be improved though, if the sequencer had more visualization and note-editing functions to let people see and edit the note data. Also perhaps notable is the new wave folder. If that does what I think it does, it's one of my favorite synth algorithms. Not that this instrument had any shortage of good sounds already... but still.

Thank you for creating an important video. As a new synthesizer user, I found that updates move good gear to very good or excellent status. Quality manuals and tutorials, however, make any product stand out by reducing the learning curve.

This is like a corvette or supra with a proper manual. An IPhone with a headphone jack and sd card a MacBook Pro with upgradeable ssd and memory. Companies looking to make profits with other products you would not buy if they did not take beloved features away are just getting crazy. IPods and wireless headphones and speakers would have sold a lot less if apple did not remove the headphone jack. Dual clutch and automatics are more profitable and cost a lot more to maintain and service. So when you have no choice even in sports cars where the base model manual take was like 40 percent it's crazy. But that is where the profit is more computercontrol less human control and tactile feel. Yamaha bought chase Steinberg and want to cash in on that investment. But motif users love their sequencer and many never upgraded to iPad apple pc music software by Steinberg with its crazy copy protection schemes and most do not want to have to use a computer they want to completely finish a song on one keyboard. Yamaha thought taking away the sequencer we no one asked them to do would force higher software sell. But what happen is people kept their motifs or bought the competition instead. Same goes for user sampling which I hope will come with the next update. Again Yamaha sells a lotifsounds. If user could sample in their boards like before Yamaha thinks they will sell less sounds. In truth having easy user sampling with the built in ram and touch screen and maybe the ability to record vocals and live instruments to some of those 16 tracks will only make Yamaha synth legends again.

Check what is happening I record a 1 Part sequence, cool I record the next 3 parts all Cool But suddenly all the sequences get deleted, i mean, after i add an instrument in the part 8 or 9, any part suddenly the song when i press play doesnt sound anything... Hmm... When I heard that Yamaha launched pattern sequencer in their new firmware update v3.0 for Montage / Modx. I got excited and really wanted to see, but it's not that good, not easy, not simple and not user friendly the way it should be on a performance synth. For basic recording it's fine. I liked the Rhythm Pattern new feature on Montage. Which was already there on Modx and now midi controller is also possible to connect via usb port etc. Looks like Roland Fantom the dope, the beast is giving serious competition to Yamaha Montage.

Hello there I was looking for a multitrack sequencer over the Internet I could not find anything that works like old machines like Roland’s MC50, MSQ700, Yamaha QX1 , etc ... so I would like you to help me if you could what multitrack sequencer could I buy to use in live performance? I was trying to choose between MoDX and Roland FA (which I ordered but canceled because of the sample issues)to try and avoid a pc or device as much as possible. I hadn't noticed I was reading old posts about the MoDX sequencer and ordered the MoDX7 a few days ago when I found out about the latest patch.

Hi and thanks for the video! I have 3 questions: 1. Are there any pre-defined rhyhthms? I prefer to focus just on the melodical parts (bass, chords, phrases) rather than spending time on creating drum rhythms. I have a PSR-E443 and sometimes I like to choose any Style (without ACPM) and jam with left hand bass and right hand chords. However, there is no way to loop... that's why the MODX seems to be interesting. 2. Can you fire some fill-ins? Can be useful before changing a scene. My PSR-E443 plays Fill-Ins automatically when going from Main A to Main B. 3. Is there also a Sync Start option? I mean count in isn't that bad, but a real Sync Start is better. Thanks for any info.

Great video...I didnt realize 2.0 was out so I downloaded, backed up my data, installed the update, restored my data and now I'm recording tracks with different scenes. I can use the scenes to switch from intro part of the song to verse to chorus and eventual to outro. I could not find a way to do this with the early versions of the software. Thanks so much!

Mike A I love it, has so much potential and you can’t go wrong with the Montage or MODX. A beast in content and an enjoyable learning curve that’s a can do, approach. It’s very satisfying to play and get lost in it for hours.

Thanks, I would like to do that, plenty of others putting great content out already, the only thing is, I don’t think I am ready for that task yet. I’d rather keep going over it because it is a lot to keep in mind. As much as I’d like to, I don’t think I could do it justice beyond what is already out there due to the fact that even tho I have had the board awhile now, I kinda got it to early since I was still grasping the Elektron workflow and terminology at that time back in December. Now with the update, I need to get my hands on it first. The new system should be a whole easier to build full songs outside a PC. Bo is always good at covering what you need to be able to function on it. He has a lot more time than I have since I only returned to music after my service this year.

its a shame that this only allows 8 scenes. The MODX is a brilliant keyboard no doubt but its small things that let it down. The MOXF supports 16 parts or the equivalent of scenes here. Also why only 4 buttons to trigger the scenes and where are the buttons to switch from parts 1 to 16? Can all this be done via the touch screen whilst performing i.e. the ability to switch both the part and the scene from a single screen?

So I had a MOTIF & RS7000 back in days . Both had a 16tk pattern sequencer . Does the MODX offer that ? I can’t find a concrete answer if MODX does or doesn’t provide that . I.e. a keyboard workstation 🤔

Can You record new background music files in 80s style or Pop on Pendrive in MP3 or WAV format and in the same time You can record on Pendrive full background music file but in MIDI format?

The sonic capabilities of this synth are really good. Great sounds and good effects, but the sequencer remains the one thing that eludes me., I've given up trying to understand it. The best hardware sequencer I ever owned was a floppy disk based Roland MC-500 - editing individual events was a breeze. With the MODX sequencer, it's a nightmare. Perhaps playing a midi track that's created from something way easier to grasp, such as the awesome (and free) Cakewalk DAW would be a better way to go. This clip or pattern based sequencing just doesn't gel with the way I think or want to create, and gets in the road of the process. So - awesome keyboard with a useless (to me) sequencer.

Nicolas Arianos you just can’t beat the Modx for the price it is just as good and some way better than the new Fantom at half the price. I know because I have both.

I need to fill in as part of a trio and to provide bass and drum backing tracks. I have set up scenes for various parts of the songs and the bass arp will follow the chords I am playing. The drums are set to 'arp hold'. Regularly, the bass will go out of sync with the drums which I need to lift the chord and play again until it matches (if that makes sense?). Am I missing a setting to stop this from happening? Thank you. Robert

Selecting your performance first sucks. Sequencing should be just that sequencing White the sequencer is plater. Music creation depends on inspiration and grooves. Therefore this is an up creative way to create. Sad.

Using the arpeggiator for recording bass lines or guitar strums would be another alternative. Does the MODX offer “drum fill” presets for adding between scenes ? great video thanks !

2020 It does, but the fun with the Seq is creating you own lines and beats without having to fire up the computer

does the "Store" command also store the music played? becuase if it does it doesnt for me, also i encounterd a problem that make some sounds not to play at all unless i re-activate the MODX with the power button, what is it? some bug? or i just got a bad MODX that i have to return and get new?

I own the Kronos, with sort of the same features, I find it very hard to stay in your creative state when using this methode. I always just layer stuff in logic. Great vid tho, bo bro ;-)

yeah! I think this isn’t a replacement for a daw or really good hw sequencer. But it definitely works for making scetches. For me its a huge improvement.

I recorded a full 8 channel loop and saved it..but when I go to the performance only the layers and sounds come up ..hitting play does nothing. Where did my looped recording go?

Electric Images Australia you can record part of a song (intro, chorus, outro etc..) separetely and set these parts in a scene that you can call while listening to the music at a touch of a button. A traditional sequencer is linear, a pattern sequencer allows you to create blocks of music.

Very nice. Still rusty on the pattern performance logic but will keep watching videos. I’m finding it not intuitive to lay down tracks I have to keep on selecting/unselecting the keyboard buttons below the track name on to record the right track. Otherwise two tracks get recorded at the same time.

finally, after years of complaints, yamaha puts a proper sequencer on their workstation/synths, like they did before. i wish they fire the people who refused to have it om the montage and modx at launch.

I don't get it... Mine is with 1.0 firmware version yet(just bought it yesterday) and it does has a sequencer, just press REC button and it shows the 16 tracks... Why people say Modx has no built in sequencer???
