Too expensive/overpriced, compared to MODX. Yamaha did a big mistake with the MODX+ prices. If they had kept the same price for the new + models, MODX+ would be a new best seller. But with these crazy prices i doubt. I bought a MODX7 one month ago at €1,400, and now the new MODX7+ cost €2,000!🤨 Really? For what exactly? For 700MB more for user RAM, or for 128-voice polyphony (instead of 64) for FM engine?🤔 These prices are a joke, none of MODX users will replace their instruments with the + models, and the new customers will think twice to buy a new model at this price.

Perhaps dealers were selling off their stock of the MODX. I bought my MODX6 in June from a UK dealer for £809. There is no way I would remotely consider trading up: I use it mostly as a sound engine with a DAW, and nothing in the upgrade is of interest.

I'll likely pick one up next year and keep my old one as a spare. It basically comes down to if you don't need the ram upgrade, there is hardly any reason to upgrade. All of the manufacturers have been having logistical issues due to the pandemic, and AKM and TSMC got hit with natural disasters that have affected their productions (TSMC makes most of the circuit chips in electronic devices everywhere on this planet and AKM DACs and interface chips and other stuff can be found everywhere in music gear for nearly 20 years). One of my guitar pedals had to wait close to a year to finally be replaced. I emailed the company a few times throughout the months and they kept telling me that they were waiting on parts. A friend had similar issues with a TV, another with his car. Various synths and other things were out of stock for months despite not being discontinued. New cars were out of stock a long time and dealerships were trying to get by on sourcing used cars wherever they could, lightly used cars were what sold immediately upon availability.

With ASM managing to put a really nice keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch into their very not plastic $1,299 Hydrasynth, it seems like a real missed opportunity that the MODX+, at this price point, doesn't even feature basic mono aftertouch, and the Montage-certainly at that price point-should have poly aftertouch. The MODX/Montage engine has so much potential for expression, as the knob demonstrates, but putting all of that control and expression at the player's fingertips without requiring them to reach up and grab a knob would help these instruments more fairly earn their price.

After trying this out and the previous modx, I think you all are seriously underestimating how important an at least half decent keybed action is to players with not updating that serious weakness as well. So my big question is if Yamaha is not wanting to put much attention into the keybed or key action on the modx(+), imo the worst of the keyboards in this price range to save money, why not just make a sound module version? Much like the past motif racks? That way instead of this poorly constructed keybed, we can use our own midi keyboards and you'll still be at a similar market price point with a lower cost to manufacturer and less parts than the montage.

So whilst I understand the marketing gimmick here is 'one for the pianist' -- you won't see in practice because yes. It's a budget bed with no real 'pros' other than cheap. The tech however is not. It's brilliant and most who own one -- know what they want that for. I think as per Varrus, the sounds are key. Use something else for the often overblown 'Piano realism'. Interresting keyboard but... At first look, there is no difference compared to the MODX, is it necessary to evolve the modx into modx+ instead of create a new keyboard, between Montage and modx? like Roland (Between Fa and Fantom, there is Fatom0) and Korg (between krome and kronos, there is nautilus)...
@Wagoo

Well this is still between Montage and MODX. The original MODX is already much closer to the Montage than either of those low end examples, too. There's very little between MODX+ and Montage in specs now.. mostly build quality and keybed quality/features.. so I imagine a newer Montage must be coming

I think for live Yamaha are fine. Fantom-0 may be a step towards daw integration and seems to be getting a lot of 'vs' air time next to Akai and others but I think it's still not mature enough to matter. For Yamaha getting artists back out into the world (live) is important and I share that. The hiding at the home studio style is ...tedious.

And the more tilted screen, front panel is excellent fur easier viewing!! I just wish the MODX+ had better quality side panels like the Montage. These plasticky panels feel so cheap. And availability in white or Motif XS Grey would've been nice

It's obscene that even flagship keyboards, like the Montage, Fantom, and Kronos, still only have about 2-4 gigabytes of user sampler memory at most. A single piano library that runs in a DAW can easily take up more space than that. The concept of the "round robin" (cycling through different sample every time the key is pressed, to avoid repeating the same sample) is nearly universal in virtual simulations of acoustic instruments since the 2000s, and especially since the 2010s. However, such a concept is unheard of in keyboard land, where you can often get the same sample across different keys. I'm personally a fan of 90s/2000s keyboard sample sets, but if you want convincing realism on any instrument that isn't a synth itself, your best bet is software. While the smart morph on FM is admittedly cool, the use of non-sine operators is long overdue, and a nifty engine combining FM, analog and wavetable (much like PhasePlant) would be nice. It would also be cool if Yamaha, Roland, Korg, Casio, Kurzweil, etc. hired sound designers to make novel sounds, much like they did in the 80s.

Kronos streams the samples directly from SSD. The 2gb of free ram can access between 25-50gb of ram with absolutely no delay as only the initial portion of the samples are actually loaded into ram.

It tends to be industrial grade flash with a very high wear leveling that should last decades, hence the lower sizes. I do think all modern Linux based synths though should also allow for either 2.5" SATA SSD drive expansion or m.2 sticks to expand the extended storage capacity

@@Jason75913 I play a P45 once a week and GHS is just acceptable for a keyboard in that price range. Instead I am the proud owner of a Yamaha P515 which I play about two hours a day and its NWX action is excellent. @@sublibrarian I don't like the keybed in any MODX at all. I like to think of myself as not very picky about keybeds, but damn MODX sucks for the money in that aspect. It seems that is where Yamaha decided to skimp out in order to hit their intended target price. FA-08 and Fantom-08 have the best keybeds of the midrange workstations. I love my FA-08, and the sequencer and sampler están chidísimos. Sound-wise, it's good enough for me, and the interface is much better. Fantom-08 only gets better with its touchscreen.

@marcobassini3576
@marcobassini3576 Жыл бұрын
The extra sample flash ROM was/is already there in the MODX. Both MODX and Montage have the same 4 GBytes chip in them (2.3 Gb used for factory samples, 1.7 Gb free for user samples). In the MODX they disabled via software 0.7 Gb (to commercially differentiate it from Montage). Now they flipped a switch in the firmware and enabled the whole 1.7 Gb also in the MODX+. If they wanted they could release a firmware update and enable it also in the original MODX. I suspect that also the 64 FMX polyphony in the original MODX was in fact an artificial limitation in firmware. The new MODX+ is actually the same old hardware at 50% + (plus) of the price.
