The most versatile synth I have ever heard. This is a game changer, trendsetter. Well done Yamaha. The technology is superb and I like the Super Knob, I also like the fact that you can disable it and change the color and pattern. The expressiveness and richness of the sounds is undeniable.

Excellent presentation, Blake. And I really like that the knob and slider positions now are synced to to the software. Which is another good sign that Yamaha is listening to their customers. The space ship has landed, and the lights and sounds are throbbing.

I LOVE how yamaha makes the montage chassis so flat - No bump between the keybed and chassis, the chassis is on the level of the black keys. Great. I find it hard no to hit the chassis with my extremely long pianist hands and fingers when playing some of the other keyboards on the market. Its great that they followed similar design of the motif.

Incredible piano! I believe Yamaha monitors market trends and competitors , in view of the large production of electronic music in Europe and demand. Motif was designed for American musicians pop music composers , Latin , hip hop and r & b . Now the European public can enjoy the new synthesized sounds and orchestras extremely worked with the Montage . But if you are a former Motif user, do not be sad , all advertisements are geared to show the new sounds , this is the focus , but the Montage can store all the best sounds of the Motif .

This thing is sounding more and more like a DJ kind of thing? Listen Yamaha, we are musicians who invest hours on developing our self to be better technically, harmonically and solo wise improvisators. So we want new sounds and new possibilities for live performance as a skilled keyboardist! If I want a DJ I would hire one, but come on? This things cost around 4000€ and it is basically a DJ station fun for keyboard players? No man, I don't thing so Yamaha. I guess right know the most amazing machine is the Korg Kronos II period!

Every vid i look at of this therr are people kicking off and i dont understand it. The comments sections are genuinely nasty over a keyboard which many haven't even played. All i see is "Kronos is better" because its a workstation. Cool mate, buy a workstation. I personally have no use for a workstation, all i need is something that sounds great with flexibility. I played one of these the other day and it's absolutely stunning. I tried the kronos and its amazing, but you need a PHD to work it. At least with this all you need is a Masters. Honestly, the thing sounds and feels amazing to play. Everything about it is just MASSIVE! I fear the vids don't do it any justice at all. Although the superknob seems a bit of a gimmick, its unbelievably useful in the stuff i play. I love being able to switch between pianos and synths seamlessly with just a simple twist. Im getting either one of these or the Nord stage 3 next month but i feel like im already sold on this.

Excellent demo! I ordered a Montage 6 yesterday. I am primarily a guitarist, but also own a studio where I think clients will love this keyboard/synth. So many possibilities. I do have a question... Does the "USB to Device" port accept a standalone touchscreen monitor so that you can mirror the built-in screen? Or is there a remote feature that will do the same with an iPad? if not, I think this would be a great feature to have in the studio or in a live setting. The 7" built-in screen is nice, but for long sessions, a larger screen would be nice.
@sweetwater5 жыл бұрын
Hello! There is unfortunately no way to mirror or duplicate the Montage's screen onto an external device, you will have to manipulate the synth via the screen on the instrument itself. That being said, the next best thing is the patch editor that sound designer John Melas developed for Yamaha, which will allow you to design, manipulate, and organize patches on your computer and then load them into your Montage: yamahasynth.com/blog/namm-2018-introducing-john-melas-performance-editor-and-librarian-for-montage If you'd like to go into more detail, please call my number below. @@sweetwater Thanks for your reply. You guys R-O-C-K! It's a shame that Yamaha doesn't take advantage of the USB3 port to support external monitors. USB3.0 provides for a signaling rate of 5Gbps. This high bandwidth capability makes it an ideal choice for video transport. Perhaps they will provide it in a future firmware update? Do you if it's possible based on the current architecture?

So this is basically a Yamaha SY77 - SY99 minus the power of RCM synthesis and it has a Prick extention, sorry I mean Super Knob. To be fair Yamaha used to make good synth, I own and still use a SY77 and after using it for over 26 years it still sounds current. Some of the factory sounds on the Korg Kronos sound exactly like the SY77. Unfortunately this demo just doesn't sell it.

That audio glass sound kind of reminds of when you tune something out of tune back. I really enjoy FM and I think they really did justice to this piece of equipment which combines features of Yamaha synthesizers. I think...maybe...I may need to get one. I'll further look into it though, I just want the FM engine to have the same ability to modify ones own sounds and save them. This would combine well with the other elements within the synthesizer. Pretty cool.

What’s keeping me back from buying the Montage or the MODX8+ is how much is crammed into the center screen. The text is small too. This should also have modern touch technology like most mobile phones and tablets instead of the old touch sensitive screen technology. Certainly, for the price point and for a new product, I would expect this. Hopefully improvements that can be made in new models. Other than that, I think Yamaha is becoming a leader, now. I haven’t decided yet, though, whether the piano samples are up to par with Nord’s and Roland’s. I really would have to play both Yamahas to know and compare with Nord and Roland with which I’m familiar.

I dig the motion sequence idea, if it means being able to store control changes with a sound. I dig the idea that there's modulation possibilities, as AWM2 was limited about modulation routing. But lack of pattern sequencing is very disappointing to me. It's how I make all the music I make. No need for a computer to edit. Easy to build up songs from 1 to 8 measure patterns.

While I really like the Modes of the Motif series, I appreciate the ability to play more then four voices simultaneously. If I am not mistaken, the Montage allows one to play 8 voices (if not all 16) simultaneous and not lose any quality. Further, Yamaha has added the transition between voice feature without the sound being cut off. As a keyboardist, this will help tremendously in changing sounds in the middle of performances!!!! I'm not too crazy about the illuminating super knob, however, I like the ability to control it with a pedal. That means, one can change, not only between voices and programs, but also, the parameters of the voice(s) and the entire feel of the performance seamlessly! Recording - It is a little tedious editing on the keyboard. I typically find myself starting on the keyboard, but, I work a thousand times faster once imported to a computer (more flexible). One single USB for 32 mono audio out/MIDI; IOS device compatible, and no DI box needed - I'm in!
@Coowallsky8 жыл бұрын
You can turn the flashing off on that knob. It does sound like it will work well given your description of workflow.
@eddiemajour84818 жыл бұрын
+Filthy McNasty Yeah, one can turn off the Super Knob (SP) and still use it as normal. However, my comment about the SP was before I got the board. Now that I have it, I do not turn it all the way off - I just attenuate the brightness to where it still visible, but, not so noticeable. This board is truly amazing.

@EduCamargoOficial8 жыл бұрын
Ok, you got 10 times the wave memory of the Motifs, but all you can hear in most parts are the sounds you already have? Music creation belongs to computer only? Great to know about a single mode, super knob, motion sequencer and stuff. But when I want to produce music, create my own sounds, where do I stand with this Montage? Sounds like I'm never leaving my Motif XS, ok?
@michaelbauers88008 жыл бұрын
+Edu Camargo Seems the FM engine would be the obvious place for new sounds. I don't own one, just taking a guess ( and I do own an XF board.)
@EduCamargoOficial8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Bauers Sometimes I feel sorry for not waiting for the XF to come, but the XS is doing me great stuff, thank God. In fact I was expecting from Yamaha something like an answer to the Korg's Kronos Family.
@michaelbauers88008 жыл бұрын
I think the Montage is their answer. For whatever reason they only did two sound engines. Well, you know the Montage is for professional musicians more than synthesists I think. By that I mean, a lot of the users are probably going to use the presets. The Montage is not my ideal, but maybe it's filling a specific niche in the market. I see a lot of people who are confused about such products, because they only products which make sense to THEM are devices for people who mainly want to create their own sounds - it should be clear the Montage is not really for the hobbiest or electronic musicians etc ( I mean, not directly aimed at that group.)
@EduCamargoOficial8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Bauers I see. Actually, the kind of answer I was expecting has more to do with the possibility of having room for loopless piano samples (which Kronos already offers), but also more space for other organic sounds, basses, guitars, seperat string sections so you can create more realistic string arrangements, seperat brass sections, extra acoustic drums, etc. Of course these luxuries would only be add-ons to the existing sounds. And something that intrigues me about Kronos is that apparently some sounds are streamed directly from the SSD, breaking all the RAM inconveniences (requires confirmation from an experienced Kronos user). On the music production field, its sequencer also allows us for tru recording of audio tracks (up to 16) which I think is good for many ocasions. I know I could acomplish mmost of the Kronos features using DAWs, VSTIs and stuff like that, but I still prefer the hardware workstation environment, all the controls in your hands, no MIDI latency and everything. So I was expecting it from Montage, a kind of a big upgrade to the whole Motif environment, adding extra features in many areas.

@sweetwater4 жыл бұрын
Hello! The Montage 8 does have hammer weighted keys, and I think they feel fantastic. Because piano sounds are only a tiny fraction of what the Montage can do, the engineers at Yamaha weighted the keys just a bit lighter than some other instruments that are more piano focused. There's something special about the Montage's and MODX's treble that I keep hearing in youtube vids. It ends up being unlike most, if not all, other synths. I wonder if the magic is in the converters they're using or the synth engine. It takes some getting used to. It at first gave me an impression of "there's something missing" about the sound, briefly making me feel unimpressed and a little disappointed. I swear that there is even a "3D" aspect to some of the sounds that is really cool, not the kind of "3D" produced by effects/modulation.

can this be sued as a midi controller and also can it work with native instrument plugins?
@sweetwater3 жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes, the Montage 8 can be connected via USB to any computer and used as a MIDI controller for Native Instruments (or any other brand's) plugins. If you'd like to go into more detail, please call my number below. Thanks for your interest! Nick LaMendola, Senior Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1660, nick_lamendola@sweetwater.com

+Smoove B. sort of..though the demo guy didn't talk about it at all or even SHOW the touch screen even ONCE or talk about the faders and knobs with LED status light ups....Hmmm...

+cresshead I would like to know if it really is the bigger, better, badder Motif for people who sequence exclusively with a DAW or if it's a bit of a miscarriage of the brand with a bunch of useless gimmicks. I'd like to hear a really good acoustic demo of it, some EPs, organs, violins etc to see if the expanded WAV memory has really made them better.

+cresshead Reading some more I'm liking it a lot. 8X the wave ROM of the XF, all the Motif XF sounds with higher quality waveforms, included 2GB flash for your own samples (2GB Mutec board is 366EUR for the XF), 16 simultaneous 24-bit stereo track output over USB (firewire expansion for the XF that allows this is 359EUR), expanded user voices means you don't have to pick and choose from the sample banks. Friggin 8 operator FM engine editable with hardware controls and it's own DSP! 128 note stereo and 256 mono polyphony per engine. And to my ears, Yamaha has finally given us audio fidelity that matches the new Rolands. So what if it has a few gimmicks, it's not like the D-beam ever ruined a Roland. And actually if the macro controller is as easily mappable and deeply configurable as they say, it could even be cool, especially with the pedal.

+Smoove B. A basic one. Seems that it is not like the Motifs, as most here are complaining about, including me.

After owning the Motif 8, PLEASE tell me this keyboard has a Hammond B3/Leslie combo. The Motif 8 didn't. What a shame. Had to ditch it (plus it weighed a TON to take to gigs).
@Coowallsky8 жыл бұрын
+ppsayl123 Which Motif 8 did you have? My XF 8 has it.
@ppsayl12358 жыл бұрын
+Filthy McNasty I had a Motif XF7. Lots of great Orhan voices (still persistent on my MoxF6), but no B3/Lesie as far as I could tell via pre-sets.

Two questions.....Does it sample like the Motif with flash memory,and does it have a decent B-3 sound?
