Alexander Brandon of Funky Rustic reviews the Yamaha MOXF8 88 key workstation. Purchased from the fine folks at Sweetwater.
This is my first review video so forgiveess of the nervous improv playing and cut off head is appreciated.
Special thanks to Sam Tolbert of Sound of Joy Music Services and Yellow Chops for their great reviews of the previous models, the MOX series, and of course, the hard working talented team at Yamaha.

And here I thought I was gonna get the MOX. I hear about this MOXF about 2 weeks ago, and I'm in love with it. The added polyphony, the wave ROM (which I still need to look into but it still excites me), MIDI capability, and I actually LOVE the sounds better than those of the Korg KROME. And it's good that you pointed out that there are less sounds on the MOXF than Korg, but you prefer the expressions over the sounds themselves. Probably the first review that lets me know it isn't the perfect workstation and why it isn't the perfect workstation, and still tells me why it's better than the others. Thanks.

i was looking for a workstation for about 2 months and i wanted an instrument without the need to switch to a computer for sequencing/recording/producing. just needed a slim and easy way to record without cables, computers and stuff. what I really love about this workstation is the mixing-voice-edit function, beeing able to change the voices parameters of a song in real time during playback. i'm loving it, and the way if creation/inspiration is a way lot different than doing it on a computer.

Very true! I think there's a bit more effort put into velocity programming on the 301, but since it's 7 years old I'm fairly sure the RAM / compression involved is far less than the MOX. I can't confirm that because no spec lists the Clavinova memory, only # of voices. I love the Clavi and a true A/B audio comparison is in order for a future video. Thanks for the suggestion.

In a response to Baltazar Mejia, I'm partial to the MOXF8 over the Roland FA. Some Roland sounds are clearly better. Some of their synths and a few acoustic bits here and there. But Roland doesn't have the great pianos and also doesn't have a decent DAW control surface. There's just so much to like in this keyboard. I should do another video delving deeper :)

Hey Alexander, I have the Moxf6 and it is an amazing keyboard. Quick question: when I apply an effect to one track, it affects all of the tracks. The only way I know how to stop this is by decreasing the chorus reverb send levels. I want to apply independent effects to each track. Example, if I apply a delay effect to a voice on a track, all the other tracks have a delay. Please help.

Very helpful video, many thanks. Unfortunately they haven't got their act together in the UK yet - virtually no shops have them! I live in hope. Quick technical question - do you know if, in performance mode, it's possible to connect a 2nd MIDI control keyboard and have it as one of the zones / layers - so, for example, you could have a full keyboard of piano on the MOXF8, and another instrument on the remote keyboard playing another sound from the MOXF8?

They are very personal like you said. For instance I wouldn't want a rompler that just played recordings of analog synths and instruments like this does. But if that "canned" sound is what you want, I think this compares very well against any Korg product, given their inferior keyboards with tons of documented problems. However, the Roland FA is one of the kings of canned sound and might beat this. I would like to see a back to back.

Wow...After i just ordered a moxf6...i see your review. Ive compaired for a year. Was saving up. Then saw i could flash more sounds from online downloads etc. So i purchased moxF6. My deal is i bought the sy77 back in 90 for 2999.00. I was a drummer really and at heart still am but havent in years. Anyway a couple years ago i found the yamaha sy77 on line. I paid 400. Came with flight case anvil 80 damn pounds. Lol. Anyway. Heres my question. Will the keys be too much more badly in feel over the heavy well built semi on sy77? Also really just making a post to hopefully feel better about buying the moxf6 over the krome 61. I found the ugly less pricy blue krome new for 798.00 on ebay. But then seeing yamaha updated to flash drive onboard i jumped on new moxf6 for 950.00 brand new. Anyway. I am planning on trying to write jingles and or opening and closing bits for youtubers commercial etc. Though im just learning again from years ago i am kindof gifted in songwriting. Not to sound big headed. It just comes easier in ideas and bits. But thanks. And if you or anybody here would like to comment im all ears. Thanks.

Would this be a good keyboard to take gigging? I'm in a jazz ensemble and I'm looking for something lightweight and easily portable that has great piano, electric piano, and organ sounds. I love how easily customizable the patches are on this keyboard. Also, I do musical theatre piano, so is it easy to use with software like Mainstage?
@AlexCBrandon
@AlexCBrandon 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but if you are ok with 61 keys, the 61 key version is only 15 pounds, also very sturdy, so great for gigging. I haven't used MainStage but once you hook your PC via USB to the Yamaha, MainStage should recognize and be able to access it fine!

I've been playing a Yamaha MO8 for a long time now, but I've been considering upgrading, mainly because I really want the A/D input so I can run my Nord Lead 1 through its effects (and to cut out a mixer in live shows). I was considering a MOXF8, but after playing one, it just doesn't "feel" as good as my MO. I don't know if it's the sound, or the key feel, or what, but it just doesn't feel right. Unfortunately, I can't really test them side by side to compare. What do you think? Would I be better off going for an older Motif (XS or ES)? Of course I can't really test those out either of course.

Having a hard time to decide between this and Korg's Krome 88. People tend to say the acoustics on this are slightly better but I think it may be more that yamaha's sounds are more tweaked for optimal sound vs with korg Krome you would often have it default with the piano lid (on grand) being closed and then have to open it, etc. For me the main factor is since the piano sounds aren't that different that I could tell, it's more the fact that I have been playing my korg Triton for a decade or so and am used to that ui. Design wise, I like the f series of this (mox"F"8). I live a long way from any place I can sit down and try them so plan on it before I order it from Sweetwater's fine staff. Have you had a chance to play the Krome? My only concerns are the keys on the 88. I heard they were really loud. It's been a while since I had an 88 weighted, last was my Roland RD-500. Never tried the new natural weighted and whatever that one is (I forget). How would you compare those? Thanks for the vid, it certainly helps. Edit: I should add that I still have the Triton so not needing or looking for a new synth. I'm mainly trying to find the better piano feel, and sound. Action is very important to me too, since I play a lot of fast paced music and like the keys to be back flush asap. Thanks again.

Well, which do you think sound better. I must say that the clavinova is about 10 years older then the MOXF8, however did you EQ the clavinova before connecting it to the studio speakers and are you using a direct box when connecting or are you connecting it from the headphone jack.

bapemos2 is correct, I didn't record the Clavinova direct, so the MOXF8 has an unfair advantage there. I honestly can't tell a huge difference between them with headphones on. Most pianos that are sampled sound very similar unless you plan to directly get a set for a Bosendorfer compared to a Kawai. They all do a good job. The Clavinova probably has more velocity layers, but less memory than the MOXF. If I have time I will do a shootout and you can hear the difference and judge for yourself.

The MOXF8 is supposed to be able to send sound over the USB port as an ASIO device, but when I tried one out with the included Cubase software, I could never get any sound to play on a PC. The Cubase software is limited to one ASIO device, but that's all I was trying: MOXF8 ASIO to PC, then PC direct sound to PC line out (to amp and speakers).

***** It's the whole deal. You can sequence music, and yes it has drawbar organs and you use dials to control the drawbars, not actual drawbars. And no worries on the english, I wish I spoke Polish. Thanks for answer, I bought Roland BK-9, but I`m going to buy stage piano next year maybe from my friend, it would be used Kurzweil K2600x, or maybe new stage piano, and then it would be Roland RD-series or just Yamaha moXF8 or Motif XF8. Hi alex. I'm wondering whether you also found moxf8 keybed action slow. I happened to read few posts regarding that issue and found that few people took a bit of dislike to moxf8 keys' bounciness. did you get the same feeling that once you hit a key it takes a while for it to spring back up so that you cannot quickly hit it again. sometimes you need to play quick staccato by hitting one key or same cord repeatedly at a quick pace. I drove around the county and could not find any moxf8 on display so I could try it myself since I am going to order one shortly. really don't want to buy a pig in a poke. hope you read my comment and will hear from you on this soon. just need your opinion on the keybed since am quite familiar with sound and system as I had a mox6 before. regards
@AlexCBrandon
@AlexCBrandon 9 жыл бұрын
Maybe a TAD slow, yes. It's a bit heavy. But I really don't mind that. If I used this for a lot of fast riff performances it might be rough. I wouldn't win in a solo contest against Jordan Ruddess, but for my writing it not that big a deal.

Great video! Yamaha has since come out with the mx88, which I realize does not directly compare to this model but would you find it as capable as the moxf8 for studio use? I'm looking for a keyboard with great feel that a piano player can be inspired by and quickly capture creative ideas, but also double as a quality midi controller. I essentially want as little as possible standing in between create and capture. Thanks!
@AlexCBrandon
@AlexCBrandon 6 жыл бұрын
Heh, it's all down to your personal preference. Sounds like such a cop out answer right? But I'd say that the MX88 probably isn't quite as featured as the MOXF8. The sounds are the same (Motif XF set). Yamaha chose to do something fairly clever... they kept the concept of two workstations. They made their flagship, the Montage, more of a synth and less of a workstation, and gave it all new sounds and capabilities. The MX88 is like the MOXF8 but without an onboard sequencer. Which, seriously, how many of us use those anymore? Most importantly, go to a Guitar Center and try it. That's the best way to know if it'll do what you want it to do, and sound the way you'd like, as well as feel good to play.

It does require its own speaker. I'm using Yamaha HS50Ms, which are no longer available but you can plug it into any powered speaker source. The choice of speaker is up to you, I recommend visiting a Guitar Center and trying them out along with the keyboard itself which should be on display. It also has a headphone output.

In terms of the samples (waveforms), there's something like 700 MB. Clearly with software pianos, they can use more. But it seems like, as you say, Yamaha can do more with less. It also loads immediately, and just, you know, works. No mouse needed. It keeps working if your computer crashes. If you want more knobs, a bigger screen, and more sturdy build, you may want to consider the Motif, but there's a big difference in price. There's a decent website with a lot of technical help for Motif's and Mox's called Motifator, which is a nice resource.

You can use the onboard sequencer to record whatever sounds the synthesizer can make. I believe it's possible to save to USB, but I haven't tried it.

I can quickly find stuff via category search on my XF. Don't know why it was hard on the MOXF. Just wanted to note that, because it's (XF) is mostly easy to use.

What are the keys like on this workstation? I'm looking for a most realistic piano key experience.

It's a Graded Hammer Action Keyboard. The best way to determine if it will work for you is to play one at a local music store. A 'fully-weighted' keyboard requires you to exercise a force similar to that of an acoustic piano to actuate a key. It may go without saying that all fully-weighted keyboards are also 'touch sensitive', i.e. a lighter strike will generate a softer sound while a harder touch will generate a loud sound. The opposite is not necessarily true, but this only happens on electronic keyboards and not on instruments marketed as digital pianos. A digital piano with hammer action goes further and tries to simulate the very complex (non-linear) details of the hammer action on a acoustic piano (both upright and grand pianos use hammers), thus creating an experience much more similar to that of a real piano. Even more, each brand has its own set of technologies (e.g. Yamaha's GHS, GH, GH3), and each one has a very different feel, probably because they were modeled after different acoustic pianos. Also, some digital pianos even 'segment' the keyboard and make the lower end of the keyboard require more force than the higher end, just like an acoustic piano. Nearly all modern digital pianos offer hammer action, but I'd still recommend trying them out to find the one that suits you best. It's a highly personal decision.

I am having an issue with my MOXF8 at the moment. The sound still works. But when i am sliding from Db - D or G - Ab. the notes aren't really clearly separated. Just wondering if anyone has had an issue with something like this, and if it is possible to fix it without having to send it in. someone help pls!

+Steven Revendes Hi Steven. I just bought my MOXF8 and I am having exactly the same trouble. When i am playing and going down a scale a press A and immediately Ab... not only the problem you describe occurs, but one of the keys sounds crazily loud.... and the sustained sound is a tone between both notes.... maybe Alexander Alexander Brandon could give us a hint on what to do. no way i can take it back to the States where i bought it. thanks !!

+Steven Resendes There were some issues similar to the one you described that have been fixed in latest firmware versions. You can check firmware version by pressing [UTILTY] then [JOB] - the latest is v1.11. Yamaha's website has a download section for MOXF with detailed instructions on how to update synth's firmware.

I bought a moxf8 a few months ago but the keybed has rigor mortis. It is extremely stiff and uncomfortable to play. Its very discouraging for someone learning to play. Ive played moxf8's at guitarcenter that somehow had a more bouncy responsive action, I dont understand.

Thank you! That was totally improvised. I can make you a whole album of that kind of thing in very short order. It's, well, kind of cheating because a lot of that is baked into the MOXF factory patch I called up. But honestly, some music I listen to because of it's "feel", not how well it's performed. So I'm glad you like it.

The Motif has something called Master mode which could work well for quick switching for live. Download the moxf manual, and see if it has the master mode.
