It certainly looks to be one impressive keyboard. I would like to get one someday, and this video has convinced me even more. Just need to save up a little for it. I never knew it had SO MANY samples and such a powerful synth. I initially liked it for it's awesome clear sound quality I heard in some demos and it's features and effects. Now, I have two (or countless more) reasons why I should get one someday. Currently I have a very basic keyboard with 99 selectable instruments, 16 built in beats and a drumpad, it is also made by Yamaha. I use a regular PC and PC keyboard for synthesis. Something like the moFX6 would be like a dream right now. You seem to be very happy with yours, It's certainly well worth it's price.

theLuigiFan0007 Let me tell you about myself. I am currently 20. When I was 8 I started learning piano, learnt for 2 years. Then I moved to another country where I left playing for ~5 years and when I was 14-15 years old I pulled my old Yamaha PSR 170 off the shelf and started using the internet. The PSR-170 is a very basic board - 100 sounds and no touch sensitivity, no pitch bend. Eventually I grew out of it. My friend had a PSR 550 which was much better (It had pitch bend, good sounds, good keybed and arranger capabilities). I used the 550 with my high school band, playing all sorts of Prog Rock/metal (dream theater, liquid tension experiment etc.) and winning competitions. Then I moved again for University, left playing for another ~2 years. I couldn't take it anymore. I had to play again. I researched for over 6 months before buying my new keyboard because I didn't want to waste all the saved money I had. Till now I am self taught, and this keyboard will empower me. I will make my own music very soon, once my fingers are back in form. I'll create a separate channel and tell you about it when stuff is ready :)

Hey Nick, thanks for posting this video, though I much prefer when you do your own reviews. In this case, I would have liked to know your own opinion about the flash capabilities. For example, would it take Akai or other common sample formats? Would it accept multisamples? In my opinion the flash is one of the most interesting capabilities of a unit in this price range, but I would like to see a review pointing out its limitations

Yamaha are good keyboards with good tones. These keyboards are cheaper versions of their main line of keyboards. This one is a budget version of the Motif XF. I play live with a Motif XS, which basically is a upper version to the Motif ES. I noticed that the XS had almost the same sounds as the ES, but some sounds were also new. I also have a Yamaha Mx49, which again have sounds of the Motif ES, XS & XF. It’s also a budget version of these boards.

It's something you can skimp on without people noticing. Unlike eliminating the Mod wheel for instance. An it's the reason I don't have this nor the MOX6... Neither the Korg Kross. A controller must have aftertouch, like it must have Mod wheel.

In other moxf videos everybody just talk about the sounds but nothing about the technical aspects like sound tweaking, sampling and especially sequencer. The Yamaha synths has excellent sounds but it’s very difficult to get around the menu’s and that’s one thing I hate about it, I have to always get the manual to find where the settings are but Korg and Roland is much more user friendly.

Am I right in assuming that the reason it doesn't sound as good as the MOTIF, especially when playing anything remotely sophisticated, is due to it's bad DAC? Does it output 24bit through USB? Would then, outputting the audio through USB, sending it through a computer to a nice interface, routing it through it's pairs of outputs and inputs with patch cables give it the MOTIF sound quality? Legitimate question.

+LemonSlice I thought I was noticing the same... but it still sounds good. They certainly got it right with the weight and one really can't go wrong with those Motif XF sounds. I really enjoy this keyboard and it fit my requirements well.
@lemonslice2233

Robert A. Unfortunately the answer seems to be to get the Motif XF. I don't know what it is, exactly, but it just sounds and feels better as an instrument. The older Motifs are great instruments as well. And neither the MX should be discounted if you are fine with the feature set. There are also rack options for the older Motifs. So good amount of choices all around if you don't vibe with the moXF.
@looneyburgmusic
@looneyburgmusic 8 жыл бұрын
+LemonSlice If you run a full XF, and a MOXF into a scope, and compare the resulting waveform output, you will see that the two are 99.999795% identical. Any "difference" in sound you *think* you are hearing is an illusion, invented by your brain. It's a common thing that happens when comparing a $1000 instrument, and a $3000 instrument - your ears *expect* that more expensive one will sound better, so your brain makes you think it does. In a blind test, with a listener who has no idea that there is a $2000 price difference, the XF and MOXF will sound identical... Because they are...
@lemonslice2233
@lemonslice2233 8 жыл бұрын
looneyburgmusic Illusion, okay. But you can't illusion an XF while sitting or standing in front of a moXF. One feels premium, the other doesn't. It's like a nice business-class laptop computer compared to a cheap consumer laptop. They may share the same performance benchmarks, but the experience of using one is not the same. That said, the moXF is indeed a wow instrument for the price considering the sound and feature set.
@looneyburgmusic
@looneyburgmusic 8 жыл бұрын
LemonSlice Sure the full XF is built better, and it feels better, and has more in-depth controller options. it costs $2000 more... But the actual XF synth engine, what makes the sound, is *identical* between the two... So for experienced players, (like myself), who already have a "pro" level controller, (or several), the MOXF is a fantastic way to add the "XF" sound to a synth rig, without having to drop several thousand dollars...

The main difference between the 2 is that the mox series has the sounds from motif xs while the moxf series has the sounds from motif xf

Let me add....i sold my mo6 n bought the mox6. In terms of features.....definite upgrade. In terms of sounds....huuuuuge mistake. On the mox6 it has the XS sound engine but i can tell yamaha slacked on the amount of elements/samples for the sounds. Motif xs full grand sounds like heaven. Mox full grand sounds similar but not the same velocity, depth, or finesse. The original mo was definitely a clone of the motif es sound wise. Mox vs motif xs....they missed by a long shot. Hopefully the moxf sound engine is more spot on with the motif xf.
@michaelbauers8800
@michaelbauers8800 9 жыл бұрын
Kevin Lawrence I would bet money it could have to do with how it was recorded. It has every single wave from the Motif XS (XF?) and the same synth engine and the same voice names. So I am going to guess they did not leave out anything from the XS/XF. DAC could be different perhaps.
@JamesDory
@JamesDory 9 жыл бұрын
MoXF: All sounds are more detailed comparing to MoX. Plus MoXF can load samples. The XF means Flash Memory, you can put the sample on Flash Memory up to 4GB (But it's expensive). However, MoXF is not Motif XF! I can tell ya MoXF Piano sound is still not perfect like the Motif XF. Motif XF keybed, velocity, Synthersizer function are much more reliable, powerful for live performance. If you have enought money, get the Motif XF. But it's fine for buying MoXF, using it in Studio, Composing music.
@pierstheoneandonly
@pierstheoneandonly 9 жыл бұрын
Michael Bauers DAC is possibly the answer. The reason that some older synths had a better quality, broader detail in the sound. The Roland JD-800 was a rompler but apparently, it sounded better than all subsequent Rolands because its digital audio converters were of a different, superior order.

Motif is not at all boring. There's tons of depth to it. 8 layered elements in a voice. 8000 waves or something like that, one per element. Can velocity switch elements on/off. Great filter IMO. A huge number of parameters and assignable controls. Tons of effects, Can sample your own waves if you need to. A prophet has 1/100 the complexity. It's not a VA, but that doesn't mean it's limited. Ever owned one? I have owned two. I would not trade it for a Prophet except for cash reasons if I could re-sell the Prophet and then buy the Motif again. I also have a Virus, and yeah, the Virus is great because of 7000 sounds on tap and more VA type options, but again, that does not mean the Motif is limited. Not sure about the moxf6, but I find the Motif easy to use as my prime sequencer, controlling my Virus and drum machine.

Disagree. Workstations i've always found boring. Parameters i would never used and buried in menus. No thanks!! I need a knob per function. And i don't think motifs and tritons have an actual sonic personality.

Ignoring the user interface which I did not think was under discussion, and addressing the concept of boring only, I think you gave up too soon. If you can't find something you like with 7000 waves, countless params, assignable modulation and 8 oscillators, I put forth the theory you gave up way too soon, and are probably biased against that style of board. I have heard analog, was great, but there's other options
