Just to let people know that Yamaha MT-10 has better brakes than BMW S1000R. Just search for videos testing braking capability for similar bikes from different brands and you'll notice it has the better brakes. The main reason people think(!) Yamaha MT-10 (and other bikes) don't have better brakes, it's because people judge brakes for it's initial bite power "feeling". But to learning it's real power, brakes need to tested under full braking tests and not be judged by "how it feels" opinions! Just my 2 cents.

It's the first honest review that I watch regarding the MT-10. The others are clearly bias. I was in line to buy one until I tried it.
@Marksman2oo78 жыл бұрын
Wait, did you just discredit the opinion of people who own the bike?
@RandomName..8 жыл бұрын
+Marksman2oo7 There are people that have no problems pointing out issues with the products they own, I'm like that, I can point out issues on pretty much everything I own/do, but there are people whose opinion is bias because they want to defend their purchase as if they were defending themselves. That's the majority of riders. So, do I discredit owners opinions? depends on the owner and on what's being discussed but if you only have positive things to say...I doubt it. But if I want to know something specific about a bike I usually try to aks to several owners of course. If I want to compare 2 bikes...That's another story! Regarding the MT-10, if the hype was not so big, supported by the reviews I would probably not feel so disappointed after riding it. I still like the bike though, it's not just as a beast and refined as the bias reviews stated. Of course if I owned one I would enjoy it but I'm sure I would not hide its "flaws" unless I was selling the bike :)

Here in Canada, the MT-10 (FZ-10) is almost $16,000 Cdn before taxes. The crossplane engine is great but you know Yamaha has cut corners on the bike. That includes some flimsy plastic fairing pieces up front, signals and tail straight out of the generic parts bin, heavy steel exhaust, monochrome display, etc. It's a great bike, no doubt, but here at least in Canada, $16,000 pre-tax is a premium price for a premium bike. As nice as the FZ-10 is, it's not a premium bike. I can buy a new FZ-09 (MT-09) for $9,000, spend a few thousand on mods and still be thousands ahead. Also, the S1000R starts at $15,200 Cdn, and the Speed Triple is also in that price range. Yamaha make nice bikes, but the FZ-10 is way overpriced for what it is.

@amurika20185 жыл бұрын
Tuono 1100 is a POS. A few notches better in design, worlds apart in terms of reliability. If you have a pretty wife who cooks and cleans and is excited to do all the things you want to do and ages gracefully are you going to go for a supermodel who does hard drugs, drinks hard, and doesn’t want to go out often because she doesn’t feel good? BMW is decently reliable. Sometimes some sensor issues but mechanics are pretty decently reliable.

@amurika20185 жыл бұрын
markmcc21 2 aprilas both had severely expensive problems once the warranty period was up. I would say Ducati, HOG, and Agusta even have better reliability. Aprila is bottom of the barrel. Everyone I know knows to dump the thing once the warranty period is done. In contrast I’ve found KTMs to be quite reliable. It’s not a reliability issue with these, it’s a factually inferior warranty offering that in many parts of the world are unacceptable. They disqualify everything other than the engine, swingarm and frame explicitly at least here in North America. They have been known to do minor things beyond that but on a discretionary basis. That doesn’t cut it in my book. Night and day difference from the coverage you get from BMW, and the Japanese manufacturers.

this review should be called, how liked much more the S1000R than the MT10
@onyekaonyia83958 жыл бұрын
I thought reviews were supposed to be unbiased? It's funny really. According to the reviewer the MT-10 is good at one thing, then he goes on to say how that translates to being a negative. But when the S1000R has a failing, he goes on to say how that is a positive. He does this repeatedly in the review. As far as I'm concerned, this is not a review, but rather a guy gushing over his favorite BMW. To anyone looking at these bikes, I'd say give both a try and see which suits your riding style and which suits your budget. In the UK the MT10 costs £1,350 less than standard S1000R. If the performance and the comfort of the MT10 are anywhere as good as most "reviewers" have described, I know where I'd put my money.
@onyekaonyia83958 жыл бұрын
+AussieRider it's not so much what was said but how it was said. Maybe it's just me, but he came off sounding like he'd made up his mind before the comparison had started that the bmw is the better bike. But objectively looking at the stats, the MT10 matches the S1000R for power. It's more comfortable than the bmw (i.e. more relaxed ergos). It has brakes that are more than sufficient for road use. The Yamaha also comes with a lovely sounding exhaust as stock (which the reviewer in his first look video of that bike described as having a "tinny" sound... go figure). And to cap it all, is a whopping £1350 cheaper than the bmw. With the extra cash, one could equip the MT10 with Yamaha's accessory touring screen and panniers and still have change. YET, despite all that, the result of the comparison is that the S1000R is the better bike?
@onyekaonyia83958 жыл бұрын
Exactly "as an S1000R owner" who obviously loves his bike, your opinions cannot be objective. In my humble opinion, a review (by any bike magazine) should strive to be 100% objective. Which this review was not (again my opinion). And by the way, the MT10 comes with fully adjustable suspension front and rear. Electronically adjustable suspension? Just more things to go wrong with a bike if you ask me. In the UK, the automatically adjustable suspension of the S1000R is not standard. It's a £755 option if added on it's own. Neither is the "Gear Shift Assist Pro" . On the other hand, the MT10 quickshifter (available from Yamaha) costs 200 quid. Include that to the cost of panniers and a touring screen, and you've still got over £500 to play with compared to the cost of the S1000R. One last thing, in the UK, Yamaha offers I believe a 2yr warranty. Some dealers go further and offer an extra year.
@SportbikerNZ8 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I felt the review was well done and clear opinion expressed without this bias you accuse them of. I have no real interest in either bike, but enjoy bike vids so enjoy watching. Fanboys are always grizzling when reviews dont go the way they want, not the rest of us as we are merely interested in the result. A straight opinion after riding is all this was, and its good to see them not fluffing about with it.
@onyekaonyia83958 жыл бұрын
+SportbikerNZ As is entirely your right to disagree. I'm no fanboy of Yamaha, if anything I lean towards BMW's bikes. Yes the reviewer gave his opinion at the end. What I found somewhat biased was his method of presenting the case for both bikes. It was clear from the first few comparative statements which bike he preferred. Like you I enjoy watching bike reviews for the fun of it. But sometimes one wants a "pure" description of how the bikes ride as well as other things such as costs, etc without the reviewer tainting/painting things to reflect his personal preferences (one such example was where he asks "who buys super naked just for commuting"... err, I do...). I made my original comment simply because his review did not seem to me to be a fair comparison of both bikes. It's probably why Visor Down felt the need to tack on the comments of the second chap as a second opinion - something I haven't noticed very often from them.
@shegocrazy7 жыл бұрын
The reviewer is summing up after have ridden and compared the two bikes. He would obviously have already formed an opinion before completing the video. It's not a display of bias unless he had that opinion before riding the bikes.

I test rode both of these bikes several times and came to the same conclusion: the s1000r has a better engine, brakes, and warranty and though hot doesn't overheat in traffic; its simply a better bike that also gets better gas mileage as a bonus.

Comment about the brakes, they actually did a braking test in an other review and the MT-10 won by a mile in stoppage power over the bmw. Enough years has gone by that I've now actually owned both these bikes, and it's really disappointing how wrong most of these reviews are. Forget what these say, the fact is the mt10 will clutch up wheelie in 4th for fun, the bmw will struggle to do the same in 3rd. That's a big difference on these hooligan bikes the mt10 is head and shoulders above the bmw in terms of engine. I was shocked to find this when i bought the bmw and was quite disappointed with the engine when i was expecting it to behave like the mt10. The rest of the bike the bmw wins.

These bikes cost the same money (in Canada, anyway) and the BMW comes with heated grips, and full brembo brakes as standard. How did Yamaha think they could charge the same for a lesser specced bike? I love Yamaha and I love the R1 (traded my 07 against the S1KR), but it's not worth the same money, IMO. I just picked up a 2017 S1000R and other than not having an adjustable clutch lever and having soft springs (which is more a "me" problem than an "it" problem) it's almost perfect Everyone falls in love with the MT10 engine (and I feel the Tuono's as well) and suddenly see the bike through rose tinted glasses. Great review, IMO.
@tHaH4x0r3 жыл бұрын
Depends where you live I suppose. Here in NL the 'base model' S1000R is 17150 euro, whilst the MT10 is 15999. You can get brembo GP4 RS monobloc brembos (including pads) for 572 euro, and oxford heated grips for around 150. That means that an MT10 with brembos and heated grips is still a good 472 euro cheaper. You can get a powercommander + dyno tune for that money, and I am sure it will then outperform the BMW. My point being, the situation that they are identical in price might be in your country, but not in every country. It is definitely a trade-off that you have to make wherever you live. Also, a few reviewers have noted that the stopping distance of the MT10 is actually better than the S1000R. Just because it has 'brembo' stamped on the side, doesn't automatically mean it is better. I do think a lot of reviewers mistake 'initial bite' with brake performance, it is not the same. I personally do prefer a stronger initial bite, but some people dont. Honestly the MT10 is not 'lesser bike', it is merely a matter of preference. Whether you pick one or the other I am sure you'd be happy regardless.

Great review. Best Ive seen in a while. Clear, concise, uncompromising, unapologetic and totally accurate camparison. None of this "well theyre both winners really" crap. But the better bike? Not so easy... MT10 is highly feral - Its by some margin the hairest ride of all the supernakeds. S1000R is vastly easier to ride faster thru twisties - Damn near steers itself even when being thrashed giving serious technological advantage to the rider - And the S1000R is undoubtedly a hell of a lot safer for the average rider because they can use this big power with great control. But then the S1000R is so clever that it also loses something in the process. And wind protections a shocker even by naked bike standards - a real strength of the MT10. And even highly experienced riders will have something to evolve with if they buy the MT10 - It is a challenge and a hell of lot of fun even for riders who've ridden all the big power bikes. MT10 is without doubt a beast - They are both epic and we're lucky to have the choice. Only question is which flavour you will enjoy most

The difference in styling aesthetics matter but after a year or two, it’s not a huge considerations and they’re all good looking bikes with some slightly better. This is trumped for most people by worry-free time on the road, and low-cost longterm value not just for resale, and low-maintenance costs off warranty, but for memories on the bike. I thought Ducati (paningale) was an unreliable bike until I owned an aprila Tuono aprc. Never again.

Bikes like the S1000R are proof that high horsepower and high torque have absolutely nothing to do with poor throttle mapping. Having 160hp is meaningless if you can't meter it. I want the bike to tip my arms off when I want it to rip my arms off. There's other times where I simply want to make it into work.

If the review is aimed at just comparing the two machines, then yeah, nice review. However, if it's aimed at a consumer on the market to buy either one, the reviewers failed to address on huge elephant in the room - the price difference. Taking that into account, the MT-10 suddenly looks a lot more attractive.
@TiagoPonteR8 жыл бұрын
Yup, I've noticed that's true for more than just Australia. In Portugal however, they are the same price, if you consider a bare bones BMW. But the options they mention in the review amount to about 1.800€. At that point, might as well throw in another 500€ and get a Tuono v4. ;)

Reliability of the BMW would always be at the back of my mind.. The mt10's looks havnt grown on me, so probably would be looking elsewhere tbh

I rode both and bought a GSX-S1000f. I don't understand why the reviewer is spending time slagging the GSX-S when the review isn't about the GSX-S ? That guy's got a real hate thing going on? at the end of the day the BMW and the MT-10 aren't worth £2.5k more than the Suzuki and the throttle wasn't a problem on the bike I test rode and the one I bought. Maybe he should ride it again, with an open mind.

*BMW has 4 riding modes. you forgot daynamic pro, which can only be unlocked after the first service when u insert that small "usb stick" under the seat

What does it cost to get that Dynamic Pro installed? I hear that transforms the bike, but I've yet to test ride the bike.

While you shouldn't have to, adding a throttle tamer to the GSXS-1000 makes the throttle on/off issue many times better. It rides after the addition of the throttle tamer about the same as the MT-10. (my buddy with an MT10 and I have switched off back and forth several times) The GSXS-1000 throttle issue complaint is legitimate. The throttle tamer makes a great bike much better.

For a much more comprehensive (and in my opinion more balanced) comparison of both bikes, see October's issue of Bike Magazine.

It's been a few months already and i still CAN'T look at that MT-10 without thinking: BOY, THAT THING IS FUGLY!...and people thought BMWs were weird looking , LMAO. TUONO 1100 all the way for me !

TUONO LOL! YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING. TUONO IS THE UGLIEST BIKE.

I'd love the BMW but reliability wise, the Yamaha probably is the better bet. Still torn as to what the next bike will be (I have 3!)

I like how you covered pretty much everything for a street ride, rather than comparing milliseconds on Silverstone. As much as I'd like to see Yamaha win, I think BMW has everything on it! From price standpoint, though, I think Yamaha is pretty good.

great comparison review, very informative and beautiful made, thx! By the way, a review between the Aprilia Tuono Factory and the S1000R would be absolutely great.

I watched all kinds of videos before I bought my bike(2017 MT10). Nothing I watched really mattered once I actually got out sitting on and riding different bikes. The truth is, they dont really make bad bikes, but no two bikes feel the same. Th very moment I sat on my bike I knew it was the one for me.
@zenden65646 жыл бұрын
BMW are redesigning a refresh of the S1000R and I hope Yamaha can do the same for its childish headlight nacelle thingy. As it stands the Tuono is clearly the best looking (to my eyes) of the class and best sounding with reportedly the best handling on road and track. Too bad in Australia they are so over priced compared to say South Africa. The reviewer didn't "dig" the Yammy groove at all but was fine with a vibbey BMW?...Personally I find the big inline-4 vibes induce hand numbness and to me that is a deal breaker. The Yammy exhaust has a chortling music sound and a sweetly smooth(!) inline-4. Let's see what BMW's reply comes up with.

I prefer the BMW as well, but good luck finding the bar model here in the USA. It seems that everyone on the dealer floor is more than $2,500 more than the Yamaha.
@Dirtboyindahouse8 жыл бұрын
not really...the only thing the Yamaha doesnt have is electronic suspension...and if you want TCS, cruise control, and all of the other electronics then the BMW is going to be AT LEAST 2K more then the yamaha (speaking in the canadian market)

Tuono 1100 Great Sound but jerky at light throttle & hot thighs?
@RandomName..8 жыл бұрын
the tuono is the best bike to ride, I loved it. The only things against it are the fuel consumption which is the same as the MT-10 and the fact that two traffic lights are enough to to reach 104°C. But the riding quality is much more solid and racier.

I'd say, German Fetish had embraced into the bone marrow of British, but I won't :D On the other hand, I really wonder how would the comparison fare today, since then-newly-launched-model is now more mature... S1000RR was already there for years when this review took place (and has won our hearths)... Anyways, thanks for the time and effort...

I have owned both and agree the BMW is a far better machine. Back on a super sports now but that BMW was an animal naked. Would lean into corners like crazy too.
@bailey9r8 ай бұрын
The MT10 is in need of a good tune more so than other new bikes, the choppy throttle is easy to cure and @ 8000 RPM it is restricted to 60% opening so that is why it didn't seem to have as much top end.
@angelodaniele6418 жыл бұрын
i had both bikes and i completely disagree with that review..... The brakes you can fix it with 100euros, but you cant do nothing and the review doesnt talk about the feeling from the chassis that the mt10 can give it to you that you cant even compare with bmw... And you cant find another bike with that feeling in very twisty roads and event at high speed on highway..... except the tuono v4. Believe me. I rode both bikes and mt10 is really better than bmw. Yes the brakes and the throttle response are really better in bmw but the hole package is completely better in yamaha's bike.
