It's a shame this one has gone, I think it sounds far better than a lot of the others I have seen videos of.

Oh, sad. I just discovered this weird instrument on another video. Why was it permanently discontinued?
@JonasClark10 ай бұрын
Yamaha ceased to make parts for it. This is their 2nd-generation model from the 80s-90s, but there is one of these still playing in Japan. The earlier versions were produced starting in the 1950s, and at least two of those are still operating. The two that were atop the Yamaha plant (both had more notes than the standard models) are, or so I'm told, in storage.
@HelloKittyFanMan.10 ай бұрын
@@JonasClark: 1. Why would they stop making parts for it if people are still wanting to hear it play? 2. Even with stopping the making of parts for it, why should that mean that they set an artificially specific date for it to stop playing, rather than just letting it play until It breaks too far to repair?
@JonasClark10 ай бұрын
@@HelloKittyFanMan. As for why they ceased making parts, I imagine there just wasn't enough money in it. Many cities had already simply decommissioned the old ones when they quit working instead of getting parts. But in the case of this particular siren, the building it was atop was about to be demolished, and I suspect they wanted to have it come down in at least okayish (potentially-restorable, maybe for a factory display) condition. But all of this is guesswork. Honestly, not a great deal is known about these devices by the public.
