I'm about two years behind on this so my observations might not be correct....... that engine looks like it needs to be glass beaded ( walnut shell is really good too ) back to a better looking condition... as for the Chinook,... 10+ on that great little plane.... should be Lots-O-Fun to putt around in.😁👍👍.

I agree lifting an engine is asking for back problems. I use an A-frame ladder and cachet strap to suspend the engine in place while I figure out the position and mounts.

Just curious. After your plane is complete, will it require another DAR Inspection due to the engine change, plus? I noted the AW was in 2005 with a Hirth. Really enjoying your build. Thanks.

Hey Ian, awesome build! Did you have to re-evaluate your cg with the added weight of the phaser and it’s mount? Wondering if this would leave you aft heavy or if you took this into account when you shortened the motor mount spar. Cant wait to see you get it in the air this summer!

I need to do a video just explaining this since I keep getting asked about it! The rockhopper literally outgrew my shop. We’re working on space to continue it but it won’t fit in there any more so it’s on temporary hold while I work on space.

ultra reliable engine..for the road...too revvy for the air..i think..
@OldBeaterGarage Жыл бұрын
the road? The phazer is a 500cc Snowmobile engine; still revvy as it makes peak power at 11,000 RPM, but if you've ever ridden a sled it's WOT for probably as much time if not more than an aircraft. Obviously a gear reduction is required for the prop. I've never flown anything other than Lycomings or Continetals with 80 year old technology, but if I were to fly experimental I would be confident in the Yamaha.

Which is the cheapest Ultralight aeroplane in the current market?
@ianslife2103 жыл бұрын
Honestly if I was in the market right now I would get on the aircraft sales Facebook groups and keep an eye on barnstormers for deals and not set my sights on one single model. If you are flexible there are deals all the time.
@hillbilly4christ63810 ай бұрын
The absolute cheapest is a self build. My all time favorite build is Brian Austein's lightning bug. There are several videos on KZbin. The guy started as a RC guy and built his ultralight using that knowledge. It is a shame there aren't any plans because I would definitely build one. It looks funky but is the coolest ultralight out there and that is saying a lot.

As you know the engines in the chinook (all the ones I have seen) have been mounted upside down, that avoids the plug access issues. Couldn't this engine have been mounted that way?
@drlescrawford8973 жыл бұрын
I suppose that's for a two cycle, with no crankcase oil, so that won't work on the phaser..answering my own question.

If you mean that it appears to have a lot of “down” thrust to the boom, I’d agree by appearance. It’s a dead match to the 582 factory install however.
