Everyone should know that if you buy an E-473, like I did, you may get stuck with a defective display (inconsistent contrast, with lighter/darker lettering and numbering). I bought in the U.S., and recently determined that I have the defective display. I have been unable to get the situation rectified so far through Guitar Center, where I bought the keyboard. Apparently Yamaha is not standing behind their product. I was not aware of the problem when I bought the keyboard, but after your warning video, I checked and found the display to be compromised.

Regarding somre orgnan voices, the user's manual on page 11 states the following: "Voices of numbers 28-37 have the same display names on both the PSR-E473 and PSR-EW425. However, on the PSR-EW425, a percussive click sound at key-on/key-off and a leakage sound are added, providing more realistic vintage organ sounds."

At 4:43 into the video, you can see that the display on the 473 is failing. Yamaha identified batches of 473s that had problems with the display. From what I've read, 473s that have been made more recently do not have the problem. I think Jeremy noted this in his video where he discusses the display issue. 🤔

Yamaha has recognized this issue and will replace the LCD even beyond the warranty period for these affected models.

Both of these keyboards were brought out by Yamaha in mid 2022 at the same time. The thing is that the PSR-E473 originally brought out in 2022 has in 2024 been upgraded to the PSR-E483. Said by a large Euro retailer to be available just prior to July 2024. Therefore for those wanting the PSR-E473 they could pay a bit more and get the PSR-E483, after that is checking out the differences on Yamaha web site. Best to. Some differences but not a great deal of them I notice. Who wants a used older model though? should the intent be to sell it on later on. In the longer term it would not matter so much. Though any remaining PSR-E473's may soon see a price drop, just so that Yamaha and the dealers get rid of them all. A nice bargain could be had. Also then we could be seeing soon an upgrade coming on the PSR-EW425. Yamaha have not released any details about it though later on this year I suspect it may get an upgrade. Maybe, maybe not. The 76 key PSR-EW310 however is getting an upgrade at the same time as the PSR-E473, it'll also be in stores around July 2024 time in the guise of a PSR-E320. Originally brought out in 2020. I would imagine the dealers prefer newer models as over the years the retail prices do tend to drop from the original RRP. With a brand new model for a while they can stick to the RRP set by Yamaha and maybe make a nice bit of profit, then the numerous Yamaha dealers gradually drop the retail price, so that 'they' get a sale and not some other Yamaha dealer. I get the feeling a PSR-EW435 could be on the way, though from what we hear in this video both the PSR-E473 and the PSR-EW425 sound good enough for me. Even folk more in to Synthesizers than these Yamaha/Casio type home keyboards are better off getting something similar to these Yamaha PSR range of keyboards. Having a good collection of the established musical instruments of the world on a keyboard, and having them 'actually sounding' like these instruments can be a handy addition to whatever synthy type music that they do like to make. Mind you having just looked through the online manuals, neither of these Yamaha models have 5 pin midi in/out, just usb midi to a computer. So I would not be too keen on either, having other 5 pin din midi equipment that can't connect to a computer without first purchasing a midi interface unit. $120+ for a decent ESI M4U type one. Manufacturers reluctance to fit 5 pin midi in/out on their products loses a sale there then with me. It would cost them $25 at most and make these keyboards far more versatile. Not just having it computer based or in stand alone mode.

The headphones turn off at random times. Rebooting doesn’t solve the problem. You’ve got to wait a random time to get the headphone output back. The other thing is that voices saved to the bank are saved only partially. When the machine is rebooted some of the saved parameters revert to the (bad) defaults.

To everyone who are planning to buy EW 425 or E 473....I had purchased the keyboard a week back. I was using E 453 before. My advice to everyone....don't buy this keyboard. Really disappointed with the quality of the same. Reasons 1) The first tone...Live Concert grand piano which is the primary piano tone is horrible...it is very thin as a sample and you can't edit it as the problem lies with the sample itself.....the second tone which is Live Grand Piano is way better..it is pretty fuller and acceptable. 2) The speakers are very poor and less louder ...you need to keep the volume at 85 to 90 percent ....the voice coming out is pretty average. Now they have given a button call MEGABOOST which can increase the volume which increase all the frequencies...it has level 1 and level 2....once you go to level 2...the voice distort.....this is so stupid...why will you do that....instead the speakers auto should automatically be powerful and stable enough to do that specifically for EW 425 which is said to have stronger speakers. 3) The build quality of the keys and off on button is the worst...cannot believe it.....yamaha is degrading the quality of the keyboard...it looks like 4) Lot of voices present in the keyboard are too thin and these cannot be edited or usable....specifically the Live Concert Grand piano This is the most genuine feedback you will find on any website.....these youtube reviewers won't tell all these flaws since they are paid by Yamaha...it looks like......my E453 was way better overall

It would be nice to know which organ-sounds are from the YC. (the 425 has got several organ-sounds from the YC-Keyboards). I've got the EW425. It's a great instrument for the price. If you're not satisfied with a preset-sound, you can change the settings like Cutoff, Attack, Release, Reverb,Chorus,Resonanz or use a DSP-effect as well - or layer it with another sound. Tip: Connect it with a subwoofer. E.g. Yamaha KS-SW100 at mono-output. The PSR-EW425 has not a special EQ-setting for this subwoofer - like the SX-familiy - but it's an upgrade (sounds awesome)

Hi Jeremy, could you kindly tell me, why does the Ew425 have such a 'resonant' and reverb-y sound effect on grand piano? I am interested in definitely using it for piano but can't stand this looongg reverb on this piano...all the notes blend together in an annoying hum and echo, almost like a harmonica instead of being clear. Is this fixable in the settings? Have you noticed this? TIA

I actually didn't know about the differences you mentioned and thought the keyboards were identical, except for the size. Out of curiosity, I even looked at the DGX-670 to see if it would have been worth it to upgrade to that one. Considering the differences you mentioned, I momentarily would have been tempted to go for the 76 key version. But the price difference and batteries would have been price prohibitive on my budget. I bought the PSR-E473 for the microphone and sound. I'm happy with it. It would have been for home use anyway. Thanks for making the distinction. It definitely gives one the information they need to decide if the differences are worth the extra money.

Great video, Jeremy. You know I addressed this subject of the 61/76/88 note keyboards several times, and how it would apply to myself, and others like you stated at the end of this video. Main considerations are your level of playing proficiency and music knowledge, what you play, if you go beyond the 61 note range like more advanced players that play fancy scales, riffs and techniques, and if you play sheet music that extends past the 61 note range usually on the left/lower notes. If you are in more formal, serious piano training, of course you will need an 88 key weighted keyboard, but a 61 or 76 key instrument still may be useful to you when those requirements are not applicable. For myself, until I get to the level of freely playing like some of my favorite keyboardists, like the Late Great George Duke, Joe Sample, Yohan Kim, Masataka Kono, and this awesone nice guy named Jeremy See, and others, I can get by with the 61 note keyboard. Certain sheet music examples extend past the lower range, but I have been dealing with it.Not a big issue. With the PSR-E473/EW425, you mentioned several differences that changes the whole ball game for some of us. The extended note range, longer length and added weight is a given, but for myself, and certain othets, the improved sound patches and amplification on the PSR-EW425 is a must have, snd worth the extra $120 USD. It's amazing what people like Yohan Kim and Masataka Kono can do with even 37 mini keys, like on the Roland JD-Xi, and Yamaha PSS-A50 I have, and the Reface series, and even other keyboard controllers for live performance, more than just inputtingvparts on a DAW setup. Also, regarding the speakers amplification, sound quality, having studied music technology, electronics, sufio and working with sound reinforcement at church and other venues, I am very familiar with all the factors you mentioned. Twice the rated power output does not always mean twice the volume capability, and neither does speaker size and other factors always apply. You can have a high rated power amplifier but, if not a high fidelity amplifier, it could have lots of noise or the sound quality, along with the speakers may not be as good as a lower powered set up from a better brand and model level. Speaker design and materials matter, too. Also, a good quality system sounds better with more presence at lower volume, too. In 1984 I had a Buick Grand National, a popular performance car, even today. I had a cusyom stereo system right when car audio was just starting to get popular and was taking off. I had two 120 watt amplifiers with a high and stereo deck. It sounded really nice, even at lower volume. To this day I have a thing with headphones and speakers especially self amplified ones. But if you're not particular about the added perks of the PSR-EW425, the PSR-E473 will be fine. Even the PSR-E373 for some. The same goes for the Casio CT-S500/CT-S1000V, CT-S1/ CT-S400, as well as the other Casio keyboards, like the affordable 88 key versions, as well as the Yamaha one you have, forgot the model number. The Casio CT-S500/CT-S1000V is also great, the latter will be my next keyboard because of the compact size, portability and vocal synthesizer functions. But the Yamahas are comparable, depending on what the different features and sound is preferable. I still want to get the PSR-EW425, probably for my church keyboard to compliment the Casio CDP-S350 we have there. I can get the Fantom-06 instead, as it has the same improved key action as the Fantom-07 for a little less, and more compact for my place, and taking it when I want to add it to my church setup when that time comes. The sound quality of the Casio/Yamaha keyboards are great, but no comparison to the Fantom-06/07, except maybe the pianos, especially those strings, but it costs 4 times the price of the Yamaha PSR-EW425. They are all great, for what you need/want, and can afford and are willing to spend and maybe save up for. There's a lot of great periphersl items that make playing composing/recording and performing, social media production and such. Lots of new goodies Roland has, including some incredible apps for music snd video production.

What is the width of the keys of the keyboards? The width of a octave of a piano is 6.5 inches or 16.4 cm. Some Yamaha's keyboards have a slightly smaller width of 15.9. I am wondering is the keys full size or the slightly smaller ones.
