There is also the “keys to success” button, together with the song book it is a great way to learn the songs step by step. You can combine that with the waiting mode as well.

PS - forgot to say the Yamaha EZ-300 training manual and also having produced training materials for Windows software is without doubt absolutely terrible, even an excellent their support team that unlike most companies you can actually ring and talk to, will tell you, it is as well.

All well and good but for anyone wanting to buy the EZ-300, do note this guy wants to sell them and obviously has had the benefit of learning how to play the piano the traditional way. I have the EZ-300 and its sound for the price is excellent , it also has a vast array of functionality and features that would ages to learn how to use it. I am also an ex teacher from industry, lecturer and IT trainer, so I think I can say I know a bit about learning how to use keyboards and electrical devices. I did try to use the EZ-300 teaching facility but have to say it is basically 'crap' primarily as you improve and move onto songs where the keys are not next to each other the issue of what fingers to use come into play ie fingering LH 54321 and RH 12345. The keyboard display for what notes to play is far too small, as it is tough enough following sheet or screen music let alone trying to get your eyes back on such a tiny square on looking down to what keys to press and not sure what key to use, Never less, I still think the EZ-300 is a good buy and have been using it with a very good online tutor and now after 6 months can read scripted sheet music, play simple chords with my LH and melodies with my RH, so buy it for that reason, not as I did that the lot red keys and this lesson feature would teach me to play. IT DOES NOT !!

Reading this made me so sad as the exact reason I was considering buying this was for the lighted keys and learning lessons. So you are saying that if I wanna glance up the screen while playing I wont be able to see what it shows? Is the screen alright at least or would you say its small? Thanks!

@@jenny8090 In my opinion, even for a short person and I am rather tall, the EZ-300 digital screen and its row of keys is hard to tell the tiny little square that shows what key to press. Again I will say the EZ-300 having taught and written training materials is 'absolutely appalling' and just forget about trying to use it to learn the piano, it is just a selling gimmick, I rarely ever look at the manual, as I just get so frustrated trying to make out and follow what is written that does not match what actually happens on EZ-300. Even so, I would say for the sound, especially the basic piano sound, it is very good. Two friends who can play and grew up with pianos say, if they did not know it was an electric organ, would have thought it was a piano. My advice and one I have applied to my self, is to really concentrate on two skills: 1) being able to read notes i.e. CDEFGAB two octaves on both the treble and bass clef instinctively, there are quite a few apps on your mobile which helps you remember them, test you and most of all can do without thinking 2) shut your eyes and really 'feel' the piano keys that match your fingers both RHS from middle C i.e. Finger 1 (thumb) on key C up Finger 5 (little finger) on key G and likewise for the LHS as well. I would say there are two types of piano players, one learns just where the keys are and the order to play them for a particular song and to look down at their hands while they play. Whereas others have their eyes on the music sheets and instinctively will 'feel' i.e. position of the keys. The first type can only play a few pieces of music and unless they practise often forget it, which is very much the case with most pop singers. Whereas if you make the effort to read sheet music and not look down you can pretty much play anything. I am just starting to be able to do that, albeit slowly and at my age after a few minutes my old brain forgets the names of the sheet notes but Jenny I have achieved quite a lot in my life but the biggest buzz and smile on my face was recently being able to play a few bars requiring both hands for the melody and the rhythm to the songs 'Stand by me' and 'Keep on running' that means so much to me when I was young. Also have a look at the website PIANO MARVEL cost about £85 a year, you need a PC or Tablet to look at as you play and a cable to connect the EZ-300 to. Lessons are traditional sheet music notes which go green if played correctly and red if not. I am not religious and much of the music are hymns but is does have a very good METHOD and TECHNIQUE series of levels which goes from a beginner to a very high standard using standard music people for years have used to learn. Did you try the “keys to success” together with the step by step method in the song book? I think that adresses most of your issues: no need to look at the screen, normal notes on paper and it explains which finger to use for what key in each song. And you can use the waiting mode also during the step by step training.
