Happy new year guys 🤘 This is a 2007 Yamaha Raptor 700 that I bought off Craigslist for 1800 bucks. It had an unknown issue that the previous owner tried to have fixed at the dealer where they could not find the issue. Knowing what I know now, this would have been a quick diagnosis, but a few years ago, this turned into a major learning experience. I hope you enjoy the video and thank you for watching! I really enjoyed watching this as it reminds me of my on-going project with my 1999 Yamaha Big Bear 350. Bought it for $1k and it kinda ran, had crap tires and sat outside from 2 owners before me after being driven through a mud puddle. So many issues I am still diagnosing, but honestly that is half the fun and knowing new and good parts are replacing the ever growing bad parts. And it runs really good after diagnosing the electrical demons that plagued it when I picked it up. Now I really want to get my hands on a Banshee or a Raptor and use it as my fun build.

Solid diagnostic. I usually will replace ECU as a last resort unless it is visibly damaged or I have another good ECU I can swap out to test it. What I am surprised is that another shop could not figure out the stator as the issue as it is on the list to test for the ignition system. As for the engine internal issue...I need to finish the video as I have never heard of a main crank bearing having a flat spot. I did have a CRF450R that had a weird sound internally that turned out to be a worn counter balancer journal. OK I see what happened with the engine...bad con rod. Loose then gets tight causing engine to stop. I bet that oil had metal in it at some point and during previous diagnostic the oil was drained and the metal shavings are long gone. So you would not have seen it.

An easy way to test for a bad stator is by not getting open line from the stator output wires, to any engine ground. If you probed that connector from the stator and touch the engine block and get continuity then the stator is grounded out. Easy way to check for stator to be junk rather than ripping into it. Either way it was junk so good on ya for sticking with it

27:22 low ohmic resistance measurement is problematic with standard multimeter with 2 wire contacting, usually you get up to 1 Ohm higher reading. 4 wire measurement unit is used for accurate low ohmic measurement. With standard multimeter you can help little bit to measure resistance with short-cut probes, and than you substract that value when you make real measurement.

the stator was prob. perfectly fine and you never checked the crank position sensor (which prob. was the actual problem given the random ignitions)...what does the meter show when you short the leads? (the cheap ones rarely allow to calibrate the leads, so you have to subtract their resistance manually) Also running an ignition coil unplugged from the spark plug is a good way to cause an insulation failure, as the voltage spikes because nothing is drawing power from the coil. last one - why do you not replace *all* the copper washers you loosen? They're cheap and a new one guarantees no leaks if tightened properly.
