To the people who are complaining, not all of us can afford a few thousand for a Rhodes, so the Yamaha reface stuff is perfect for someone like me who wants a great Rhodes sound without breaking the damn bank or having to carry a laptop & midi keyboard around all the time. It's not meant to replace the Rhodes, just give a cheaper but excellent choice for people like me.

I just bought another Yamaha EX5. I bought one new back in 1999 for a house gig that I was doing. Some drunk ripped it off and destroyed it in the alley. I know that's off topic as this is about the reface CP. And it does sound great. I'd use it with my Keystation Pro 88. Kinda cool how Yamaha hid that grand piano preset :)
@JasonS-ui8id

Tyler, I'm pretty sure none of the Yamaha Reface keyboards were intended to do acoustic instrument sounds. They're meant to recreate classic keyboard sounds from decades past, which themselves were often vaguely emulative of acoustic ones. Although I suppose you could argue that a toy piano is, in fact, an acoustic instrument. Most people, though, would say that it was created to _imitate_ a piano on a compact scale, much as the Reface series imitates (quite well!) larger classic instruments on a small portable scale.

I would challenge any of you to tell the difference in sound within a mixed song... It's a really good emulation and certainly better than any of the VSTs I've come across... Definitely plan on making it a part of my studio setup - played via my larger midi keyboard - it'll be used in the same way as a rackmountable sound module.

To me, what this video does (and thanks for making it by the way!) is clearly demonstrates that the reface is well inside the league of classic Rhodes sounds. I bet you could compare two original Rhodes side by side and hear just about as much difference as you hear between these two. This is all forgiving the fact that the settings on either could still maybe be tweaked a bit to make them sound even closer. At this point, one is not "better" than the other; they're just different. In fact, I bet if you doctored this video and switched the audio---so that when you saw him playing the reface you heard the original and vice versa---you'd still have plenty of people saying, "Oh the original wins hands down."

You could barely hear a difference when he was playing both note by note but once he started doing riffs and stuff you could tell. You need the full context, atmosphere and tonal nuances and that's what comes into play when you're actually playing music. I've always thought that you don't necessarily hear the difference between these emulators and the originals - you feel it. All that being said, I still think it's pretty damn good for $250 and I'm definitely buying all 4 :)

I just bought one (waiting for it to arrive) but I gig on a pretty small bar stage. I've always known software was the best answer but I'm not going to prop a laptop or iPad up while I'm playing. Apart from being an excellent reproduction of the Rhodes (better than my Roland FP30) the knobs are physical which is so much easier when you're switching sounds on the fly between sets. If you want a real Rhodes buy Vintage Vibes tine remake for 5K USD. I can't afford that so here we are.

Guys - just my recommendation. Get an Arturia Keylab 88 essential MIDI keyboard. It's much better, because you have over 6000 sounds of practically anything you can imagine. It's only $350 dollars, and it feels quality. I know I sound like a salesman, but ever since I got it, I really believe it is the best option out there. Sure, you have to plug it into a computer, but if you just want to play, get an aux out to a 1/4 inch connecter and then into a guitar or bass amp. I guess this is assuming that you have a computer and an amp, though. Still, the audio coming out of the CP can't be great anyway. I just found that it's the best way - you get all of the sounds out of a full keyboard with any vintage sound you can imagine. It has a lot of knobs and bars also, so you can control parameters (such as the drawbars of an organ) easily.

Fact: The REFACE clearly doesn't possess all the touch sensitivity, nuances, and subtleties of playing the real thing. Fact: The naysayers and nitpickers either have really strong backs, or can afford to hire people to lug their Fender Rhodes 88 to gigs and studio sessions for them. But personally speaking I wouldn't have a problem using the REFACE, it does what it does very well. I happy that technology has improved to the point that we can have access these wonderful sounds in smaller packages and venues. Kudos to you Yamaha. Gotta get me one of these, for the fun of it if nothing else.

The magic with the Rhodes also comes from melting it with different guitar amps, or mic pres/DI Boxes in case you take the signal from the suitcase preamp. A Rhodes played throuh a Carvin Belair guitar amp is an opened door to heaven. Sure you can get intersting melting results doing the same thing with the Reface CP, but the more organic and analog the source sound is the more you'll get nuances and character in the result. In that way a real Rhodes wins but that said this little keyboard sounds outstanding close to the instruments it emulates. This is bluffing. I guess as time will go, hearing differences between real instruments and their emulations in a mix will become almost impossible. The real advantage will remain on the feeling the player gets when playing and hearing his instruments live on stage or during a session, due to expended frequencies, keyboard feel ect...

I can of course hear differences between the original and the reface emulation when back to back - but I honestly thing that within a mix the reface emulation is gonna sound really fantastic. Both great keyboards. Sound a little different. The SV1 is a dream. I own both.

I own the SV1 and after using it a bit I am a little let down by the lack of quality dynamics and sound quality over all and have now been using it as a controller for software Rhodes emulations, but the Yamaha sounds far better at least over you tube...I might just have to pick one up.

For people speaking about portability, I can take my iPad Pro, load it up with Rhodes emulators and sample libraries, such as Neo Soul Keys, and play the closest thing to Rhodes, which blows this Yamaha out of water, yet read the news, and check the Facebook when I want. Just how portable is that. So, to cut any crap, when I want to play the Rhodes, I will play the real Rhodes.

Minoan Light I have irig keys, neo soul, and the reface is so much better it's not even comparable. Those iPad apps are nice but they don't sound near as good as a cp.

Neo Soul Keys, one of the most praised electric piano sample libraries sounds bad? OK, I have nothing more to say then...

Minoan Light I said it sounds nice and it does. The gospel musician who makes those apps and the software does a great job. The mk11 bass is really nice too. The problem is less the limitation of his ability and the limitations of non proprietary dac chips and dedicated processor chip. The analog portion of the cp circuit and its proprietary dsp chip mean that it's hardware it's only utilized for one thing, to get a certain sound. I have countless apps on my iPad and I am so thankful to live in an age with such exceptional innovation in technology. I don't know if you have tried a cp but honestly it is better that the Korg sv-1.

It sounds Ok, but the keyboard is a joke. If you really want the best possible Rhodes sound, get Keyscape. It's probably better than a real one.

what, and have to buy a computer? I don't think so

You can get a laptop, MIDI interface and MIDI controller for well under a thousand dollars. If you shop around, you might even get them for not much more than the Reface CP. Of course Keyscape is about $400, but you'll be able to run a DAW and numerous other instruments as well on the same laptop. Any keyboard player without a computer is living in the past at this point. All of the serious keyboard development is in VSTs.

nah, there's a huge wealth of amazing stuff you can do without any of that garbage

There's a huge amount of stuff that you can do with a harmonica, but that doesn't mean that I want to swap my keyboard studio for one. If you're happy living in the past, than it's your loss. But you could do more with modern software than you could possibly imagine. Remember, every modern keyboard is basically software-based anyway. The question (with any instrument for the past 30 or 40 years) isn't whether you want to run a software synth. It's whether to do it on a dedicated piece of hardware or to use a more powerful regular computer, with lots of programs that all work smoothly together.

your analogy is poorly chosen and doesn't represent what we're talking about. does your software do what a harmonica does better than a harmonica does it? well obviously not. mind you, you seemed to think a software package is superior to a fender Rhodes.. and you may think that that's the question from your point of view, but many of us play instruments that have been around for far more than 40 years. if the entire extent of your music is playing in your own house, on a computer, with some MIDI controllers and a DAW/VSTs, then it might actually be you that's missing out.

Focus was onb "portability" !!!!! use it as a sound module ad connect it to a good 76 or 88 keyboard via midi, plays like a dream.... and you can take your own Rhodes on camping near the bonfire !
