To the people who are complaining, not all of us can afford a few thousand for a Rhodes, so the Yamaha reface stuff is perfect for someone like me who wants a great Rhodes sound without breaking the damn bank or having to carry a laptop & midi keyboard around all the time. I just bought another Yamaha EX5. I bought one new back in 1999 for a house gig that I was doing. Some drunk ripped it off and destroyed it in the alley. I know that's off topic as this is about the reface CP. And it does sound great. I'd use it with my Keystation Pro 88. Kinda cool how Yamaha hid that grand piano preset :)
@JasonS-ui8id Жыл бұрын
Tyler, I'm pretty sure none of the Yamaha Reface keyboards were intended to do acoustic instrument sounds. They're meant to recreate classic keyboard sounds from decades past, which themselves were often vaguely emulative of acoustic ones. Although I suppose you could argue that a toy piano is, in fact, an acoustic instrument. Most people, though, would say that it was created to _imitate_ a piano on a compact scale, much as the Reface series imitates (quite well!) larger classic instruments on a small portable scale.

I would challenge any of you to tell the difference in sound within a mixed song... It's a really good emulation and certainly better than any of the VSTs I've come across... To me, what this video does (and thanks for making it by the way!) is clearly demonstrates that the reface is well inside the league of classic Rhodes sounds. I bet you could compare two original Rhodes side by side and hear just about as much difference as you hear between these two. This is all forgiving the fact that the settings on either could still maybe be tweaked a bit to make them sound even closer. At this point, one is not "better" than the other; they're just different. In fact, I bet if you doctored this video and switched the audio---so that when you saw him playing the reface you heard the original and vice versa---you'd still have plenty of people saying, "Oh the original wins hands down."

Guys - just my recommendation. Get an Arturia Keylab 88 essential MIDI keyboard. It's much better, because you have over 6000 sounds of practically anything you can imagine. It's only $350 dollars, and it feels quality. I know I sound like a salesman, but ever since I got it, I really believe it is the best option out there. Sure, you have to plug it into a computer, but if you just want to play, get an aux out to a 1/4 inch connecter and then into a guitar or bass amp. I guess this is assuming that you have a computer and an amp, though. Still, the audio coming out of the CP can't be great anyway. I just found that it's the best way - you get all of the sounds out of a full keyboard with any vintage sound you can imagine. It has a lot of knobs and bars also, so you can control parameters (such as the drawbars of an organ) easily.

But personally speaking I wouldn't have a problem using the REFACE, it does what it does very well. The magic with the Rhodes also comes from melting it with different guitar amps, or mic pres/DI Boxes in case you take the signal from the suitcase preamp. A Rhodes played throuh a Carvin Belair guitar amp is an opened door to heaven. Sure you can get intersting melting results doing the same thing with the Reface CP, but the more organic and analog the source sound is the more you'll get nuances and character in the result. In that way a real Rhodes wins but that said this little keyboard sounds outstanding close to the instruments it emulates. This is bluffing. I guess as time will go, hearing differences between real instruments and their emulations in a mix will become almost impossible. The real advantage will remain on the feeling the player gets when playing and hearing his instruments live on stage or during a session, due to expended frequencies, keyboard feel ect...
@Gottenhimfella2 жыл бұрын
That may have merit, but how many Rhodes pianos are in tip top performance condition at all times? In my experience, unless you're a genius at repairs and maintenance, many of them spend much of their time being essentially unplayable. Especially if they get carted around a lot.

You can get a laptop, MIDI interface and MIDI controller for well under a thousand dollars. If you shop around, you might even get them for not much more than the Reface CP. Of course Keyscape is about $400, but you'll be able to run a DAW and numerous other instruments as well on the same laptop. Any keyboard player without a computer is living in the past at this point. All of the serious keyboard development is in VSTs.

There's a huge amount of stuff that you can do with a harmonica, but that doesn't mean that I want to swap my keyboard studio for one. If you're happy living in the past, than it's your loss. But you could do more with modern software than you could possibly imagine. Remember, every modern keyboard is basically software-based anyway. The question (with any instrument for the past 30 or 40 years) isn't whether you want to run a software synth. It's whether to do it on a dedicated piece of hardware or to use a more powerful regular computer, with lots of programs that all work smoothly together.
@theycallmejpj7 жыл бұрын
your analogy is poorly chosen and doesn't represent what we're talking about. does your software do what a harmonica does better than a harmonica does it? well obviously not. mind you, you seemed to think a software package is superior to a fender Rhodes.. and you may think that that's the question from your point of view, but many of us play instruments that have been around for far more than 40 years. if the entire extent of your music is playing in your own house, on a computer, with some MIDI controllers and a DAW/VSTs, then it might actually be you that's missing out.
