I do wonder if it’s just the keybed or a lovely red paint job, but for whatever reason Nord boards just keep me hooked from the moment I touch a key. More so than any of the keyboards I own, I just find myself entranced in the sound and feel of the Nord, and I’m always surprised and what I play with them.

I need to get me a pair of those magic red goggles! (Oh...It turns out those aren't what made the music sound so great. It sounds even better without them!) This video is closest thing I've watched to a legit test of the various keyboards. Even then, it's hard to control for all the variables. The Reface benefited from the Montage keybed. And as Jack pointed out, we're just listening to one basic sound - without any effects or amp simulation. Still, I loved it. Mike is an amazing player. Plus, he's honest and a really good sport. I've owned three Rhodes (including a super rare Executone which I made a video of on youtube) and the SV1 default is by far the most realistic Rhodes simulator I've ever played, and I've played a bunch. What Mike thought about the Reface CP at the end is true - it's definitely tuned to its small action, and if you try to play it over a bigger weighted one, you'll always land a bit on the soft side unless you dial in a velocity curve. (but: it's still one joyful little thing, that one, and one of my favourite purchases)

@lousehr
@lousehr 3 жыл бұрын
@@eboyeman8457 “I started playing for the school choir. That’s where it started. Before long, I ended up being that kid at school who played everybody into assembly. Piano was just something I picked up naturally. I felt sometimes that it was more of a gift than anything, because I never had lessons, it was more a thing of being around music. In church, you had like 30 seconds to pick up a song. When you don’t know what you’re doing, you still kind of had to play anyway!” As school came to an end, Mike’s love for piano began to become a central passion in his life. “After school, I said to my mum and dad that I wanted to study music more. My dad expressed that he ‘couldn’t see how music’s going to put food on the table’, so instead, I studied Graphic Design at college, which was quite interesting and still sometimes useful to me. I finished that though, and still felt the drive to do music.” In the end, Mike headed to Middlesex University and started doing a Classical BA in music. “The problem was I couldn’t read music,” Mike recalls. “I was an instinctual player really, so I jumped into theory and bought a bunch of books before the course and started getting my head around it. So by the time the course started, I wasn’t too bad - but I always dreaded reading.” The big smoke Though he learned a significant amount from the course, Mike’s career success really developed in a more organic way than through academia. “I really didn’t like the course, and I left after a year. So I started living in London and playing in different outfits and at different music events. One of my mates’ friend’s bands had a keyboard player who got into an accident. They asked me if I could play quite last minute and I’d seen a fair few of their shows and knew their songs, so jumped on and ended up playing as cover, basically. This lead to them saying: ‘You’re pretty decent’. It was a lucky opportunity that was a bit of a springboard to other things.” Mike got to know musicians in London, and ended up getting regular work playing keys in different sessions. “Slowly, over time, more people would speak to me and offer me work. A friend of mine came up to me and said: ‘I’m organising a tour, and you’d be really good for it. The way you play would suit this artist’s music.’ I was free to do it, so was enthusiastic. He said: ‘If you can survive this tour, you can survive anything.’ It turned out it was a stint playing keys for Dappy [of N-Dubz fame]. So that was the first tour I did.”

You already said it, each Rhodes (except for the new ones) sound differently. Not only is it part of their design (you can modify the whole thing), the classic ones are also old and aged over time which changes the sound drastically. The instruments chosen for Keyscape were hand picked. They searched for instruments in the best possible (or unique) condition, had technicians optimize or even restore them before they stated sampling them. You can be sure, the Rhodes you hear when playing Keyscape did very much sound like that in reality and I would assume it was in almost pristine condition, close to when it was new decades ago.

Yeah. The keyscape Rhodes sounds are pretty much what I always wanted my suitcase 73 to sound like. Don’t get me wrong, the real thing is the real thing, but the choices and versatility on keyscape are difficult to beat. Terrible test, to be honest. Different notes at different velocities for each instrument. Like comparing TV pictures that are tuned to different channels. So... #1) Wouldn't it be much more revealing to record and play back a single MIDI performance? That way, each instrument would receive the identical set of notes and velocities, and the differences in how they respond would be more apparent. #2) I would have also included 9 distinct sections in that one recorded performance. A light touch, medium touch, and heavy touch, in the lower, middle and upper registers of the keyboard. #3) And how about playing a single chord, with sustain pedal, to listen for differences in decay? Those are the kinds of nuances that the instrument creators sweated over. Great playing, Mike

It would have been nice to add Scarbee's samples. I have one of the first Nord Electros (2001), Scarbee and a real Rhodes. While Scarbee is more detailed and nice ("breathy") in a studio setting, the feel and presence of the Nord is unbeatable in a band, Scarbee does not come even close. All instruments played here sound nice, but the question is how they -feel- under the fingers. Also: 2 Rhodes can be set up to sound dramatically different (bell-like, woody, somewhat hollow, gritty,..) so whatever instrument is "closest" is impossible to say.
@nathancarterkeys
@nathancarterkeys 3 жыл бұрын
I think they all have their different applications. If you’re in a studio setting where all the nuances of a rhode sound are going to be captured, then Keyscape will probably be your best option. But in a live setting, especially in a church setting, the nuances get lost in the mix. In my opinion, you want something that’s a bit more flat that still has some character like the YC-61

I can hear that the keyscape one has a few slightly "bad" keys, very similar to my real rhodes. All the other ones sound very one-dimensional in comparison

The problem with this is that it is comparing ROMpler with software. Of course, the deeper sampling of the computer is going to win. Do this again comparing all software Rhodes, like Keyscape vs. Scarbee etc.

I often play a Nord Rhodes sound through a Yamaha Keybed via MIDI - and I always use a velocity converter as the two actions don't match very well. Using always the same keybed for all sound engines is NOT neutral at all. You would need to do some adaptation as the middle velocity values are quite different for the different brands.

Awesome playing! Really surprised that the Nord sounded so flat, but there are so many different Rhodes sample sets I guess that could be a bum one? Would have loved to hear some Kurzweil in the mix--they're very good about adding in that realism but it varies greatly by patch. This is getting so hard when even every real Rhodes sounds different from another.

That's actually true, I was mad about it but in the PA the nord sounds like butter, I think that they modelled the rhodes for these purpose. But I agree, keycape it's the most realistic, the downgrade it's to have a machine that runs it totally fine with no latency or glitching

@LuisFlores-xr5bu I just came back from a music store comparing the sound quality and character of the Rhodes piano samples in Keyscape versus a Nord. I have to admit they both sound equally good in my opinion, but in their own way. They both have their own character in which an individual may prefer one over the other. The Rhodes samples used for each instrument have a fundamentally different tone. To be honest, I think using the Nerfetit model in the Nord for the comparison in this video was not such a good idea. To me, the other models in the Nord sound much better and have a much fuller tone with lots of character. With that said, Keyscape sounds amazing and also have lots of detail and character as well. I do think Keyscape wins in regards to emulating the details of the mechanical noises of the Rhodes instrument. In regards to the tone of the harmonics of the Rhodes, I honestly can't say one is better than the other because they both sound excellent and they're tones are fundamentally different. I will say I do prefer the bassier tone of the Nord if I could only pick one over the other. Ideally, I'd like to have both. BTW, the Nord has Dyno filters (and eq) as well as brighter sounding models that give it a much fuller and less muddy tone than the Nerfetiti model. You can actually hear the bell-like overtones in the other models. In fact, the Nerfetiti model which is number 8, is my least favorite model out of the other Rhodes samples I've heard from the Nord. If you try the brighter tines model and throw the Dyno filter on it along with that beautiful chorus, you will get very lush tone that very comparable to the one from the Keyscape patch used during the outro of this video.
