Gentlemen, this was a unbelievable unbiased review. I absolutely watched every minute of it and agree with your final results. I do feel that you missed out on one HUGE CATEGORY. Factory Accessories. Most users that buy these machines add alot. Polaris, is definitely #1 in that category. IMO! That is why I chose the 2023 General over the Yamaha. I added factory Tilt out windshield, Upper doors and rear glass and of course because it only comes with a 6 month warranty, I added a 4 year warranty. I truly believe that Factory accessories should be one of your categories going forward. The best hands down unbiased review on these three machines. All information was accurate IMO! 🍀👍🙏🙏💪💪👏👏

Much appreciated! This video took weeks to produce. We will have to take some time to wrap our heads around including factory accessories as a category for future shootouts. We definitely understand where you're coming from. Having the machines to evaluate makes doing a shootout with them easy however evaluating an entire accessory line that we do not have access to would be a little more complicated. Great suggestion though.

Having sold Polaris for 15 years while listening to my customers complain and dealing with the Polaris warranty department I have to say this. Polaris has a genius design market for making what most everyone wants in all department’s. Now the other side of them,with out any doubt they have the worst quality control of any company in the world. They put the parts up for the lowest bids all across the world. They have zero interest in durable long lasting machines, and it’s proven by the 6 or 12 months warranty. Ask anyone that owns a Polaris sxs or atv how often they replace A arm bushing,u joints, drive belts,wiring harness trouble, tps sensor,broken shocks. They are the worst built machine made. But they are nice what time they are not broken down. I’m just saying!!! Oh I almost forgot they do build a fairly durable engine but they take away from that with the weakest differential and axles in the industry. In case you are thinking that I’m selling some other brand,I’m not I no longer deal with any power sports whatsoever. Good luck and ask a lot of honest Polaris owners before buying.

Great review of these three machines. I have owned 2 CanAms in the past and currently have a RZR XP1000 Trail & Rock, which I love. Never had the opportunity to even ride in a Yamaha so I have to trust your judgement about the RMAX. At 74 years old and a wild driver, my wife FINALLY convinced me to slow down, sell the Rock & Trail and buy something she would be more comfortable riding in. One of the deciding factors for me was the availability of service and parts. I, or I should say WE, decided on the General XP1000 Deluxe with Ride Command. So all that being said I appreciate your thorough evaluation and now I will " slow down", enjoy the General and keep the tires on the ground ( well most of the time anyway :).

I’ve never had any reservations buying a Yamaha, dirt,street, whatever. They may not be at the top of any one category but they always score good acres the board. Great vid it wouldn’t upset me to own any of them. After riding bikes for years I drove my cousins side by side and that sold me, radio, cooler, fishing poles, lawn chairs, yeh I’m in lol, especially the older I get.

As an RMax owner, I’d agree with everything said in this review. Sometimes, the rear suspension does want to get air when you might not want it to, and you have to be able to correct for that on the landing. But it is fast, and it’s so good on the tough trails and rock climbing that I like to push to see what I can do before switching into four wheel drive or other drive modes. I typically keep it in sport mode, even on tight, technical mountain trails in Montana. It’s a great machine.

Awesome review Thank you, I just purchased the 2021 commander and these three machines I hummed and hawed over for a couple months before moving on purchase. The upright seating helps the ingress/ exit, Also offers a bit more sight line specifically longer sight before moving over obstacle. My last machine had upright seating. The most noticeable and i find important is that upright seating gave me back pain after the majority of train. I now have 40 hours on my 2021 commander and no back issues at all. I wanted to note that I found while resurrecting the r max only months after the machine was released two u tube videos where the transmission had to be replaced. This being the first machine they have put that much power into a machine with that much weight might just be a first year learning experience. All machines look awesome. The major selling point for me ended up being comfort and full time storage, meaning storage of items that people should always have with them. Fire extinguisher, first aid, spare belt, tools, proper strap to not hurt trees, tire repair, flashlight, garbage storage,excreta. Hope this helps.
@MassiveOverkill
@MassiveOverkill 2 жыл бұрын
The transmission failures were not because of engineering design but because of improper bearing shimming.......human assembly line error. It affected a very small number of units. So small that no recall was done. Commander Maxes have a front driveshaft problem, which isn't assembly line error but engineering folly. The lower-end visco lock diffs are still plagued today with issues and we all know 3 wheel drive sucks.

one thing: noted at 3:10...... the Can-Am and Polaris both use belt slippage as their "clutch" ...... as my friends have experienced in their machines.... this can leave you stranded in a deep water crossing once the belt starts to wear as the belt will then be really slippy in the water... both their machines got stuck in the deep water while my Kawasaki just motored on through it (Kawi also runs a transmission internal clutch and constant belt engagement similar to the R-Max), this is also why the Yamaha and Kawasaki machines are the only belt driven machines to have "engine braking" as they employ a one-way cluch in the transmission to keep the belt engaged at all speeds..... hence why you also don't hear of belt problems in these machines and why they offer such long warranties on the belt drive systems...... they know they aren't going to break or have problems very often, where in a Polaris you better bring a spare belt and all the tools to change it on the trail. speaking of the engine braking, at 7:00 when you see the Polaris descending a slippery hill, you can hear the driver riding the brake and somewhat struggling to keep control- in the Yamaha and Kawasaki machines you don't have to worry about this as you can just let off the gas and the engine braking is much easier to descend slippery hills in. Finally for those that want to call me out, I own two machines currently a Yamaha Wolverine and a Kawasaki KRX, and have owned a Polaris Ace in the past......there's a reason i sold that POS Polaris.

Hey ! Just wanted to say how good of a job you guys did comparing these SXS's, I loved that you put the same tires on all machines, that really evens the playing field. My friend had the original Canines on his KRX and they are a very good tire. Like you guys said, you can't go wrong with any machine, they are all very nice, the Rmax is my choice for my riding style and the terrain here in Eastern Canada. Plus the Yamaha reliability and belt drive system is second to none. I was super impressed with the Popo having Walker Evans shocks and sailed over those jumps but couldn't believe how much those seats shook while riding, and the Can Am is nice but the body lines on it are weird, it looked like they took a box off a different machine and just stuck it on the commander.... where the Polaris and Yamaha have a clean shape and body lines. Anyways You guys did an amazing job with this video, very honest and great test for all of these machines. New Subscriber !

We sold our General and bought a Commander 1000 XMR after the TWENTY SEVENTH TIME having to have it serviced in just 2 years, and it's in an entirely different class for those wanting a do it all machine. We've towed our 2680 lb overland teardrop almost 280 miles with it multiple times. It's been over 4 feet deep in the mud to the point where you have to get out of the seat so you can keep breathing and still gets itself out. The thing just doesn't care where you are or what you're doing, it just does it. Now the only time Polaris comes to my mind is when one of the people I ride with is stuck or breaks down. Wow , it will eat all three of these machines alive in anything except utility /bed space / work and was as cheap, and cheaper than these 3 units lol. All are nice machines !

Yeah sounds like you got a pretty good deal on your machine. If some people just prefer utility capability or realize that there was no point in having a 190 horsepower machine when all you're going to do is drive-through the woods at 25 miles an hour.Obviously we don't drive that slow but we see a lot of people in turbos that leave us scratching our head like, why did you buy that? We hope you're taking advantage of all that horsepower.Congrats on the purchase.

This is a very thorough, and comprehensive review - excellent job! You've provided a lot of useful information but if I were looking to buy one of these right now it would be difficult to choose. Personally, I feel the General is the nicest looking overall, I love the front end of the Yamaha but I find the front of the Commander is awkward, but perhaps it would look better in person. I like the look of the previous one better. I like options when it comes to the drivetrain, so I like The Commander best in that department, but I also like a roomy cab and it seems to be smaller than the General or Rmax. I currently have a 2015 Commander with over 14,000 km (8,700 miles) so it's been a durable machine. I guess for me it would come down to the Can Am or Yamaha. Keep up the great work UTVonDemand. I've watched lots of your videos and look forward to more.

Thank you for such a positive comment. If you liked your old commander and it has been reliable we believe you would love a new one. The new machine's overall performance is dramatically improved. The new cockpit seems like it's quite a bit more spacious than the old 1. Had a little time to ride in 1 during our commander test video shoot. That machine had a hard life but it was still going..

Great vid! Very informative and fair. I own the RMAX XTR2. I already have 1400 kms on it. I do like it but it’s not perfect, there are things I hate. 1) it’s way to Friggin loud! Had a sound system ordered but cancelled it because I have to wear ear plugs for my aggressive riding style! 2) has a hard time starting In the cold. 3) you get very dirty driving it. Not cool getting your hunting gear covered in mud 🤦‍♂️. For the money, Yamaha should have added big fender flares. I bought some aftermarket flares which solved the problem. 4) have had a few recalls and two of the FOX shocks had to be fixed on warranty already. One on the right front, one on the left rear. 5) no turf mode. The big aggressive Carnivors are very hard on the lawn. Other than those things, I really like my RMAX! Lol

Must say although I’m late the video was definitely fantastic. As a 6’4 ex football player I have found the can am best suits me personally. I like the spacing in the can am and the general for me although a great vehicle it hurts my back too much something about the seat position I guess. Yamaha is also really nice love the rugged capabilities but the bed is lacking for me. Can am to me has the best bed, seats and performance I need. Trailing in the ozark mountains for a multi day camping trip or doing heavy work around the house the can am is a absolute weapon. All of these are definitely fantastic rides no doubt and I hope everyone enjoys there rides and are safe. Commander 2023 XMR 1000

Been to 3 off road Jamboree's in Utah this year. It's tough to find many RMAX's or Yamaha side by sides. I love Yamaha's!!! Don't get me wrong. I'm 68 years old and have been doing this since I was a kid. But there are a lot of Polaris units out there. Far more than any other brand. Chances of breaking are pretty good with that number especially when you put a driver in the seat that goes flat out all the time. My point is...You can break anything if you try. I have a Ranger xp1000 right now, 5k miles of good sensible driving. No putt putt driving but some tough off road and long straightaways in AZ with 110 degree temps. One problem. The clutch, that's it. So what! My point is, they are all good to some extent. It comes down to the number of brands and who's driving / maintaining the vehicle. If your racing them you don't count. These are built for fun, not killing yourself or someone else driving the opposite direction. I would buy any of these models. Personal preference is what it comes down to. My favorite quote," A mans gots to know his limitations" Bashing others models is not what this excellent shootout video is about. Great job UTV on Demand!!

I think a key difference between the three is the rated towing capacity. At 2K, both the Commander and RMAX have the capability to tow the other off the trail in the event of breakdown. At a 1500lbs rated capacity, the General XP 1000 does not even have the capability to tow its own weight. Big deal breaker for me!

Same crew, can am, better seating position then all reviewed for big drivers used to sport machines. Nice it offers turf mode but modes and diff lock too complicated and gives up grip when it matters most in trail situations where the rmax will cruise up getting you to the top of climb safely....RMAX is the winner, can am respectively in a close 2nd, poo poo in its deserving 3rd. I had a 2014 Commander Max, but no longer needed a four-seater and wanted to upgrade. I am not a fan of Polaris, and really wanted a Commander XTP, but in summer of 2021 none were available. My local Yamaha dealer called and said he got an RMAX-2 LE unexpectedly and was I interested? So, I bought it, and have been riding it for about five months now. The fit and finish is superb, and the interior appointments are better than the Commander, and I have come to really enjoy being able to adjust shocks and ride from inside the cab. It goes everywhere I want to, and does everything I ask of it. But after riding it a while, here is the thing I have found I DON'T like, and it bothers me enough that I might trade it in- driver leg room! There is no room between the brake pedal and cockpit wall to slide your foot past and extend your leg! A minor thing perhaps, but I am a Veteran with some beat up knees, and not being able to do that becomes very uncomfortable after about 30 minutes of riding, and I have to stop and either get out, or just open the door for a minute to stretch my leg. I have since sat in an XTP, and I CAN do that in that machine. It's such a minor thing, but really detracts from my riding pleasure. Dammit!

I will say that among the mods that probably most people do (windshield, stereo, ext) the one performance mod i would recommend is a dual rate suspension.. Once i gave them the info needed they sent me a spring kit that i installed myself.. Was not very hard to do and took me less than 3 hours.. Probably could have done it faster if i had one of those fancy spring compressors.. The difference was noticeable immediately and the kit gave me about another inch of ground clearance.. Im not a shock expert by no means but even i could tell the difference in ride quality of the stock springs and being a true dual rate spring kit gives it a ton of adjustability.. They also offer a valuing kit so you can rebuild the entire shock and that is supposed to make the ride even better.. If you want the sport utility machine with suspension that will perform most like your RZR's at high speed then you would probably want to look at the general. It is the best of the 3 sport utility machines when it comes to whooped out choppy terrain. If you said you really liked writing in Moab, rock crawling, or mudding,We would probably have recommended the RMAX. The RZR XP 1000 rides flat and level in whoops. The Yamaha's back end is just too unsettled in comparison. It is worth noting that Yamaha just released a new RMAX sport that has a higher end suspension package. We will be reviewing that early February.

You know, that's a good suggestion. Yeah well, since we didn't put it in the video and we got a lot of experience cleaning them, the Polaris is the easiest to clean. It had smooth plastic under the fenders that helped prevent mud build-up in nooks and crannies. Overall it just seemed like there was less hard to reach places to clean out. We only do deep cleanings and it seemed like the Polaris took about a 1/2 hour less. We would follow it with a Yamaha than the Can-Am. It takes a little more time to figure out where the mud hides on the other 2. Perhaps this is something we will include on future shootouts.

Please please please follow up with what the cost of maintenance and availability of parts is. I was told my a Polaris/Can-Am tuner to buy the Yamaha based on that alone. No one cares what you have if you can’t get to the trails…

It would be extremely difficult to start verifying a lot of part availability on 3 different machines. That could be tougher than filming this shootout. We get the concern though, for sure.

I'm a current 2020 General owner but really want to buy an RMax, due to already changing a belt on my General with less than 700 miles on it. That being said, if only the RMax had a limited slip or "terf mode" rear end!!!! That is a showstopper for me; the kids like to putt around my mothers-in-law 3-acre yard and the General does it without a trace, moves like a cat (great job Polars!!); while the YamerHammer will tear the heck out of it... darn... darn... darn....😕😕

We do not have many belt failures with Polaris vehicles. When people complain about premature failure with belts there is typically some sort of misuse involved such as driving the machine at low speeds for prolonged periods of time and high range. Not trying to defend Polaris but that has been our experience. Making use of low range when it is appropriate will save your drive belt. Who knows, maybe you just had a bad one.

I am getting the Commander XT-P Max, are you doing any reviews on these or do you have any comments vs the General 4 seater? Great review!!
@UTVonDemand

We have not driven the 4 seater but Ryan Snyder from Planet side-by-side has owned the new 4 seat Commander and A Maverick sport 4 seater. We would strongly recommend calling planet side-by-side and getting his opinion on both.

Offer full doors with quality side glass windows and we shall come. Riding is unpleasant when the temp is in the 20's and you don't have something that resembles a snowmobile suit. Make the doors color and decals match the rest of the ride, rather than the after market ones that are flat black in color. I will overlook a little more door rattle for the extra warmth.

I'm used to 600-700cc dual sport m/c's with 70bhp+ on two wheels.... I love hill climbing at speed and gnarly rocky trails including across river beds. Wondered if you can advise me on a machine like this. Only ever had the can-am Renegade 500 quad which I thought was slow. Now Id like a side by side I can use on the farm for pulling a small trailer and going up in the mountain trails at speed on weekends. This one seems good, but I'm no expert. Im not just looking at the latest models. Anywhere from 2013 onward. Great Video btw

One big question would be how wide are the trails that you are going to ride on? Most of the machines are either 50" wide, 60" wide, or 64" wide. If you have 50" restricted trails that would be important to know.

@@UTVonDemand The trails arnt tight here but very steep in places. Usually wide enough for a car but knee high water in places.

I own a General and agree that Polaris has to up their game on fit and finish...also if you would have put 1000 miles of desert riding in the test you would have seen how annoying the suspension squeaks can be!
