"Big towers" aren't necessarily harder to drive, or require more power than "bookshelfs". In fact, smaller speakers are often less efficient, so need MORE power to drive. And regardless, it's a silly thing to say about a receiver that makes 100 watts. It's not like it's a 2 wpc SET amp. A good 50 wpc is a pretty beefy amp.

I have the RX-397(50W) that predates the R-S300 by about 5+ years. If you look at the specs basically it is the same receiver except that the R-S300 has an iPod dock and a sub-woofer connection. Otherwise the specs are almost identical. I recently had to purchased an R-S300 off eBay for $150, not because I wanted to upgrade, but because I blew one of the channels on my 15+ year old RX 397. I have a 4 speakers(A&B) setup and the right B channel did not put out any sound anymore for some reason ? I called a couple of repair shops and most charged $100 just to look at it. Never mind trying to get the parts. Yamaha does not service the RX 397 anymore so I had no choice, but to go to eBay. The reason I am very comfortable with 50 Watts, is because that's about all my speakers can handle ! I still have my Yamaha NS-370 speakers that I purchased about 30 years ago when I got out of college. One thing about speakers, is that they get better with age and they certainly don't make them like they use to. I really wish Yamaha sold the silver R-S300 which looks even better in the USA, but it's only sold in Europe and Japan unfortunately.

I like how this receiver has a 75 ohm antenna connector like on a tv, so that you can hook up an outdoor antenna or an indoor antenna such as rabbit ears to the receiver for better fm reception.

50wpc is enough to drive towers if they are decently efficient. a good 50wpc amp will handle speakers better than a cheap class t amp rated at 100wpc.

Yah, stereo receivers generally have more accurate ratings than surround receivers do. Plus this RS 300 is almost identical to the RX 397 predecessor, and also like the RX 497 because it has a sub out. It is also capable of 4 ohm loads, which means it is high current with low impedance drive capability.

I highly disagree with you about 50 watts per channel is only good for bookshelf speakers. That is so untrue. I have a 50 watt per channel Technics receiver driving 3 way floor standing speakers and if you put the volume to number 4, the sound would drive you out of the house. Let's put it another way. 100 watts of power is more power then you will ever need, unless your a soundman working the sound equipment for a concert at a large venue. Ponder this: A Electronic Church organ rarely outputs more then 120 watts of sound, in a area that is 100 feet long and 50 or so feet wide and it fills the church with sound, I am a professional musician. So, you don't need to be so concerned about watts per channel in my opinion. 50 watts per channel is a lot, unless you want to play the stereo so loud that you not only go deaf when your 50 and you also blow out your speakers!!!!!
@AvuCa8 жыл бұрын
+Richard White Technically, you are absolutely right! Watts are not the greatest way to measure the capability of an amp. We have an old Sansui that drives some truly massive speakers with only 35W. At the same time the amp for my guitar is 65W and runs out of head-space quickly despite my single dual coil speaker. It all depends on the efficiency of the speakers, the music you listen to, and believe it or not, how the amplifier produces the Wattage. Old valves and tubes can do much more with less Watts. In this case, this particular amp is better for large bookshelves. Sure, you could run certain towers, but I am trying to err on the safe side. Good comment, power matching is probably the most confusing part of assembling a system.
@richardwhite23448 жыл бұрын
+Audio Video Unlimited power matching is confusing. The part that annoys me is when some people buy a stereo system and crank the volume to 5 or 6 or more, and then wonder why they blew out the speakers. I take care of my stereo system, I do listen to music loud sometimes but would never crank the volume higher then number 3 for two reasons, it would be so loud you would hear it outside in the summertime, and also because I want my stereo to last as long as it can. My Technics receiver which I bought new in 1989 just died a few weeks ago, and I used it every day in those 27 years. That is also a testament to the quality of Technics, My personal favorite brand. the bottom line is if you take care of what you own, it will last longer
@raymondleggs55087 жыл бұрын
sometimes big vintage floor speakers are only rated at 30 or 40 watts, but at very little volume on the amp they are so loud with no distortion that you can hear the sound with absolute detail all through the house and out on the front yard. I know this because i had Large Mid century modern speakers from Sony I got at a thrift for $5.00 called SS-440 that sounded amazing and loud, with very little volume and were rated at 40. The sound was always clean, open tight natural and detailed. All paper cones with a passive radiator, you could hear the resonance of the strings in piano music and AC/DC, and foo fighters. Badass. I once watched iron man 2 in two channel mode and you could still hear directional cues and the dialog was like the people were in the room. Ant this was with tiny magnets compared to most speakers.... They sounded better than the new out of my price range polk and JBL a salesman tried to pressure me into once

@brandonjohnson80478 жыл бұрын
+fantom58 If you like the sound of your tuner you should use it. Will the built-in tuner be better or worse? It's hard to know, a good signal is a good signal. The limitations for radio are usually not in the components. The limitations are instead dependant on the signal strength in your area.

@geno86jo8 жыл бұрын
I have the rs 300 and im really happy with it. I use it with my mission speaker 783 and also try it with canton bookshelf speaker. I prefer the floor standing mission speaker but to be fair they are way more expensive. I`m not sure about my teufel downfire subwoofer....some advice ? ;)
@AvuCa8 жыл бұрын
@geno86jo My best advice is to find a shop that will let you bring the amp and plug into the speakers you are considering. The only way to know if you like the sound is to hear it. Do make sure you preform a volume sweep and listen for clipping. If you get a bunch of farty or muffled sounding lows at volume you know the amp is short on power. Sustained inadequate power will quickly destroy a system. The sub should be fine as it's self powered. The RS is only sending data to the sub which won't be a strain.

A stupid question perhaps but why is this called a "2-chanel receiver" and not simply a stereo amplifier? Is this because it has a FM tuner build in?
@AvuCa8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel De Rudder You got it! Yamaha does make a true 2-channel amplifier, they call that series AS instead of RS. The AS series has no tuner or digital display, though some do have A DAC for digital and optical inputs.

why the hell is it damn near bigger than a home theater yamaha system when it's only running 2 channels?
@AvuCa9 жыл бұрын
+nachosNapples That's an excellent question! I have seen a few of these without the covers. The first reason is that this format is a standard size for rack mounting. The second reason is that Yamaha uses the space to create two separate mirrored circuits to prevent distortion between the channels. The third reason (I believe) would be to ensure proper cooling. Heat stress is the number one killer of audio equipment. Yamaha does an excellent job of keeping the air flowing and, even when you work this unit hard, it never gets more than warm.
@nachosNipples9 жыл бұрын
Audio Video Unlimited Oh. well good enough reasons for me. would you consider it an upgrade from an old(ish) aiwa nsx-aj203?
@AvuCa9 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. The RS series performs great. Paired with the right speakers you can get some great sound for a reasonable price. Your local AVU should be able to show you a variety of options. I personally like a set of Paradigm Mini Monitors, but you should always audition speakers to find the ones YOU like best.

Would this be god to run with a pair of Polk Audio Monitor II 50? They are tower/floor standing but I'm pretty sure they don't need a whole lot of driving force I guess is the right wording lol. If someone could give me some feedback that would be awesome!
@AvuCa9 жыл бұрын
It will work, but your towers may not get loud and you may find that the sound is a little flat. Your speakers are rated from 20-150Watts at 8Ohms. You will need to work this little receiver fairly hard to get your speakers going. I would look at the RS500 or RS700.
@ConnorBright9 жыл бұрын
So what speakers would you recommend?
@AvuCa9 жыл бұрын
That is both a tough and easy question. Different speakers have different strengths and what I like you may not. The easier answer is the RS-300 has 50W of output for each speaker. This is enough to drive a good set of bookshelf speakers, but not quite enough for towers. I would look for a speaker that has a (Nominal Input Power / RMS) of 40 to 50W. There should be a pile of options that will deliver great sound and the RS300 will be able to drive them all day long without hurting the speaker.

how would this receiver sound with 200watt speakers? currently have Technic SBT200 speakers
@MelosAntropon7 жыл бұрын
The "200 watt" speakers is the speaker manufacturers way of saying that their speakers will handle up to 200 watts input power (which is borderline insane!) What it is telling you about the Yamaha receiver is that the receiver cannot hurt the speakers at all - it is not "powerful" enough(!) Short form: this receiver will work fine with your speakers.
