@@NemoPropaganda I own both Elac B6 and B6.2. They both sound incredibly good connected to this amp, especially considering the total package price (both Elac were purchased during their ~50% off sales). One quirk to note, when using the Bluetooth feature, is that the sound quality is much better from a newer smartphone or dedicated streaming device than it will when hardwired from a smart TV (I've tried several TVs of mine and various friends and family members). I'm assuming it's the better DAC in the newer phones versus smart TVs. By the way, I always thought this was a class D amp, mostly because of the price, but you said otherwise. I was surprised, but I suppose this is why it sounds so good as compared to amps that cost much more. I recommend it to everyone, especially those who are just starting out in hifi.

Thanks for your great and in-depth review, sir! I have this same Yamaha RS- 2020 stereo amp I bought on sale, at less than $ 149 current price, in a box. Yes, I got lucky! I love it: the wide of sounds, the (easy-to use) remote control, the bluetooth, the radio (FM/AM), ways to connected speakers (probablly, 2 to 3 minutes!), and alternative possibilities to add a subwoofer, all without a sub dedicated connector! Great review. Very thorough and much needed. I agree, I have no idea where the 100W RMS is coming from. I was actually surprised at how far from that this amp is. I also notice you only briefly mention the cheap (and extremely small) spring-clips for speakers which really limits you on speaker cable size and connections. At this price point, one might expect this from other manufacturers, but I would expect binding posts from Yamaha.
@JavierSanchez-jz1xx
@JavierSanchez-jz1xx 4 жыл бұрын
You want binding posts at this price really??? Well people never are satisfied, always want more and more for less, stupid pathetic!!! Get a more expensive one if you like more features, but I'm sure you are going to cry like a little bitch complaining!!!

Calm the F down. They are cheap and narrow binding spring clips and that's all I said. Binding posts don't cost very much to add, and it would have been nice to see on this receiver. Other than that it's great. I bought two of them last year. So get bent. EDIT: Even the cheap Pioneer SX-10AE ($129) has binding posts at this price point. So you know two things: Jack and Shit.

Using one of these in a bedroom system at low to medium volume on some vintage 6 Ohm ADS speakers. I'll use the bass and treble controls to mimic a old school "loudness" button. For this use case I think it will be fine. A slightly warm, laid back sound will be fine for listening to music before going to sleep (not critical listening stuff), just to relax. I prefer this class AB receiver at its low price (snagged one for $129) compared to all the class D amps. I know these things are built to a price point, but since it does have Bluetooth, that means it has to have an internal DAC of some sort, so why don't they offer say, a Toslink optical input?

Hi, Thanks for an honest and non hysteric review of the RS202. I own the RS201, which is the same unit without built-in Bluetooth. It is in a bookshelf in my study driving a pair of Pioneer BS-22-LR Andrew Jones bookshelf speakers rated at 6 Ohms, and it runs them just fine with no heat build-up. I normally play at 50 percent volume classical or pop vocals. I use a Denon DP300f turntable running the internal preamp on line 3. It really sounds great to me, but I will be 84 in December so my hearing has a high frequency drop off caused by being on the flight line of a fighter squadron in the USAF.. I agree with your assessment that the true power of this unit ( RMS 20-20K) is lower than 100 watts and I am assuming that it gives you clean 50 watts per channel . In my study 11x12 that is plenty for me. I don’t think there is anything at that price point that can beat it. Playing it is not helpful because it is being recorded by your camera and the sound will be colored by the recording, so I agree with just describing your reactions as best you can. Thanks again for your honest review.

I find the RS202D very light on Bass but the treble is very nice. I use the RS202D with a sub woofer. One tip for using a sub woofer, dont put the source through the preamp stage of the Rs202D because it rolls the bass off quite severely in my opinion. Note the D version might be different from the non D version.

Excellent review. You are quickly becoming a go to for me because of the heat and the quality of your reviews. I am in the marker for a new integrated amp. I was thinking $350-$550 price range. They need to power 4ohm speakers for music and sometimes movies. I ways wondering if I could get away with a $150 stereo amp like this but I will pass. The Emotiva TA-100 and the IOTAVX SA3 are at the top of my list. Do you have a preference on these two? Should I consider the Yamaha A-S301, Denon PMA600NE or NAD C316? I want something with an AB amp, clean articulate sound, an excellent DAC and a phono input (MM)
@NemoPropaganda
@NemoPropaganda 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words Matt, i just finished filming a review for the Denon PMA-600NE and a trio comparison with the Denon, IotaVX, and Emotiva. If you can wait a few weeks for me to post those videos i think it will be really helpful for you. I haven't heard the Yamaha AS301 and the NAD unit doesn't have a sub out so it's not really on my radar. In a nutshell the denon is warm from top to bottom, you'll give up detail in the top end and speed in the bass compared to the emotiva and IotaVX, both of those two will sound more open, detailed, and have better bass articulation with the IotaVX having a more open sound with better separation up top and more muscular sound overall. My Vote goes to the IotaVX but it is the most expensive of the group. If you prefer the warmth of the Denon and don't mind the trade offs it's a great unit too and if $400 is your maximum budget the Emotiva is fantastic if you want a more neutral and open sounding amp.

Hi Nemo. Your review helped me to buy this basic receiver. I’m using it in my garage for streaming music so no expectations of hi-end sound from a $150.00 receiver. I just want good clean sound at moderate volumes with average speakers. Yes, I know, even that expectation is high at this price point. I think a lot of users are spoiled. @@NemoPropaganda Happy New Year Nemo! I just wanted to report on the arrival and first impressions of the R-S202BL. I’m playing through a single pair of Sony SS-5000 ported tower speakers about 6 or seven years old with light use on them. They are rated 150 watts RMS. For context, I paid $169.00 for the pair back then. First, your review is spot on! This Yamaha tuner performs exactly as I expected. It provides very good, not spectacular, sound quality at moderately high volume. You are correct again with regard to the wattage power. It has power, but, not the high power provided by the 2 channel high end amps of the 70’s. Still, adequate for my 20’ x 25’ garage, even with the 9.5’ ceiling height. FM reception and clarity is good. Bluetooth connection is quick, easy, and reliable with my iPhone X. Where this unit shines is playing CD’s!!! I found a greater volume and better clarity playing CD’s from my fairly high quality Panasonic CD player from the mid 2000’s. The unit, in this configuration, provides plenty of very good, not great, bass. The speakers may account for some of this as they so produce better bass response than many other towers with 8” woofers. Again, I agree completely with your assessment of this unit. It is a great value at this price! Also, these speakers are 8 Ohms each and the amp did not even come close to running hot, even when blasting them at 94 on the volume using Bluetooth input for several songs and a few hours at around 80. Obviously, I can’t vouch for it’s lifespan, but, it does have a 2 year warranty. Thanks again for helping me with my decision to purchase this unit. To anyone else thinking about buying this box, I would say what Nemo concluded. It does everything it can do very good, not great. I don’t think you can expect great at this price point. What this unit is, is great value!

The position of the volume knob has nothing to do with quality or power. It's just gain. A receiver can clip with volume at 12:00 o'clock position and be louder than a receiver that doesn't clip even with volume at max. The same goes for the arbitrary dB volume scale on receivers.

It gets better and better with Yamaha. In order, after this 202 is then the R-N303, R-N602 and RN-803. It would be awesome if you could possibly review the 303 or 803 since the 602 is a little bit older. Nice review man. Thanks. Oh, PS: integrated Amplifiers are definitely not an anomaly. If anything, the more rare thing would be a separate pre-amp and separate amp. Integrated stereo receivers have been common since the 1970s all the way to today. Younger people seem to think that these things are "lesser than" because it's a pre-amp, amp and tons of features all in one, but, it's less of a signal path - less things "in the chain". Separates can sound awesome - don't get me wrong but today, you would think the Default for an audio lover building a system would be an integrated stereo receiver such as this. Anyhow, getting off my soapbox haha. I was just confused at the video title as if these things were somehow an anomaly. Anyhow, excellent video dude. I subscribed.

Soooo while you can use 3 speakers on this amplifier it is not a good idea as this is a stereo amplifier so if use 3 speakers you will have either 2 left and 1 right speaker or 2 right and 1 left speaker as this amplifier does not have a center channel output. If you want something with a center channel output you need a home theater receiver. Personally i would get rid of the center channel and just use this amp with your speakers for stereo.

Hello.... Im bit green so forgive me but this is the type of info i've been looking for and i'm hoping you can help me. You touched on the sub connection and i'm curious on the best connection. I'm running this receiver with a Polk 10" sub and 2 Klipsch R-41M bookshelf speakers. Also i have a AT-LP60x turntable running thru the receiver. I have definitely noticed it starts to strain at the 70 level and falls apart closer to 80, if that high, thru the turntable. I can get a little bit more thru bluetooth. (i will definitely play a little more with tone control).... So my question is again the connection. The R-S202 sub connection diagram says to connect from the high level (Speaker A) on the receiver to the sub high level input AND THEN connect the main speakers directly from the sub's output levels. Is this the correct setup or should i connect the Klipsch speakers to Speaker A and the sub to Speaker B as you eluded to in the video?? I've haven't been able to find a clear answer anywhere and hope you help and shed some knowledge on this. I appreciate the help
@NemoPropaganda

Hi Thomas, thanks for the question. So basically it's like this: You know how if you play a game of telephone the more people that are in the chain the more distorted the original message gets? So it's the same with a sound signal, we don't want anything else in the chain unless it has to be there so adding the subwoofer between the amp and speakers is not ideal, it'll work, but it's simply not needed and could degrade the sound quality. Instead i do recommend using the A set for your speakers so that their power is coming directly from the amplifier and the B set sends the signal to the subwoofer. Hope that helps clear up why i prefer to do it my way as opposed to the way Yamaha recommends. Feel free to ask any other questions.

The power supply is where they cut corners to get to the price. point that's why more expensive amps will sound louder. But it depends what they test to get 100 Watts RMS. is it a test signal or a real would input. It does seem like they might be messing with the numbers a bit. you would think Yamaha would care more about there name then to mess with numbers for an entry level product...

@@NemoPropaganda Hey Nemo.. To be frank I haven't. I have increased my budget. Can you please suggest something which is 1 grade above this RS 202?

This or the cambridge audio AXR85? Huge price difference between them.
@NemoPropaganda
@NemoPropaganda 3 жыл бұрын
I have not heard the AXR85 but my recommendation in the $400 category is the Emotiva TA-100. And yes that is a lot better than the RS-202. It has a lot more power, controls the drivers better, more detail, etc...

Hola¡ tengo un audio-tecnica lp60x, donde lo conecto en mi Yamaha rs-202?

Sorry bro I don't know very much about phono but the RS202 does not have a phono preamp so you need one or your record player needs to have one built in.

Per Amazon UK, Richersounds, and Pricespy.co.uk that seems to be the UK price, it's fairly common for different countries to have different prices. For example Focal speakers for us in the usa are like 20-25% more expensive :(

i have an equalizer; can it be used with this Yamaha?

The Yamaha has it's own tone controls for bass and treble but you can put a secondary EQ between your source and the yamaha if you really want to.

Would this pair well with klipsch RP 280f?
@NemoPropaganda

should be okay, something with more power would give stronger bass and better control but for $149 it's hard to complain.

Can also just run speaker wire off of the speaker/s to high level inputs on sub/s to have less wire.
@NemoPropaganda
@NemoPropaganda 2 жыл бұрын
Kind of yes but keep in mind this only makes sense with dual subwoofers running high level otherwise you will have to run wire from both speakers all the way to one side of the room where the subwoofer is which will mean more cable than just running it off the amplifier.

Last year, I went with the Onkyo TX-8220 instead of this Yamaha or the comparable Sony. $200 and you get binding posts for banana plugs, and a subwoofer out. I suspect that a review of the Onkyo would sound a lot like this review of the Yamaha. It's pretty good at everything it's supposed to do, at this price.

Russel Haxby $50 more for binding posts and sub-out is totally worth it in my opinion. I’m surprised i haven’t heard of that model until now.
