here is how it is. if you trail ride or ditch bang the 850 is for you lighter more power where you need it and a easy sled to toss into corners. if you plan to do high altitude riding then it gets more complicated. if you are new and have not had experience in the mountains I recommend the 850. this is because it's lighter and has easier handling characteristics. you will also be digging your sled out of holes you make quite often so the lighter the better. if you have good experience in the mountains the yamaha is the way to go it can make crazy hp at a any altitude and if you mod it then you will struggle to keep your ass on the seat when you punch the throttle. the yamaha can go up snow shoots that no other sled can and the heavy frount helps if you know what you are doing as it can keep you from constant wheelies from the power

Just like your magazine of late, you say a lot of words but actually don't tell us anything. You have both sleds, why not get a rider to run them trough a closed course trail and see which one he rides faster. it is clear which sled will get to the end of the lake first but what is not clear is which one is faster down a whooped out section straight trail. You form no opinion about engine and chassis durability. Why not? Maybe that is to come, but these two companies have long histories and who has shown to have a more durable chassis and engine? Give us the power to weight numbers, weigh the sleds full of fluids, give us the numbers. It doesn't seem that difficult.

People seem to forget that if skidoo wanted to build a sled with more power then Yamaha they could. The fact is that most people now realize that the proper combination of power, weight and balance is what makes trail riding as well as mountain riding fun and exciting. The skidoo is so well set up that right now nothing can touch it in terms of balance. The Yamaha is a beast and would be great for the trail rider who wants a aggressive sled which is perfect for long miles and long trips. But make no mistake you are missing out in many situations. Skidoo learned from Mach Z days that there are limited sales with models like that. This is why Arctic cat and Yamaha share a sled and engine and struggle for sales. Arctic cat may not even be around soon. Polaris was wise to follow skidoo down the path they went and both have no issues with sales.

jeeze enuff with the etek , who gives a shit! anyone with a pulse knows the sidewinder is an all around better sled, why even ask wich is faster? its frekin obvious! and the weight thing means absolutely nuthin, if doo come out with a heavy but killer fast sled the weight argument woukd be all but forgotten! there is basically no debate until a manufacturer can make anything close to hang with a sidewinder that is as affordable as it and slap a warrenty on it, as of now nobody can except yamaha, case closed

4 strokes are trail sleds. No one with a brain or skill rides a Yamaha mtn sled. Fat tanks that can only go straight. We made one guy in our group sell his yamaha or said we wouldnt ride with him anymore. He bought a Pro RMK and now actually enjoys riding instead of getting unstuck all day.

He's just trying to get people excited to buy a sled. These guys should enter the sleds in some Cross Country races and see how they really do... Yamaha is heavier .. but will last 3 times more miles.. Yamaha also loses no power at high Altitudes.. Riding at 500' and at 10.000 feet is a totally different ball game,

Let's face it, Yamaha is wiped out. This is an Arctic Cat sled with a Yamaha engine. It is basically a supplier of engines to Arctic Cat. Period. They are no longer developing their own sleds. Re-branding Arctic Cats was the alternated decision to abandoning the snowmobile market. Their decision to eliminate the 2 stroke instead of developing it further was a catastrophic strategic mistake. I was a fan before they made that mistake. Now they are left with a measly 2-3% market share. How long will they even bother to continue supplying a handful of dealers and how long will dealers stick with such a low volume name.
@jamescantlin10727 жыл бұрын
YAMAHA is and has ben the number one motor maker for fifty years hands down if they wanted to make a two stroke they could make it better and last longer then skidoo or Polaris that's a fact and the truth and 80% out of a hundred people would agree and as fair as cat and Yamaha working together cat has a race proven chassis and Yamaha can build a 4 stroke engine better then anyone in the world this partnership is and has ben good for the sport what a good business decision for both anyone in business to make money and you do what it takes to turn a profit its all about money !!! And I will tell you from riding one last winter its fair the fastest and best riding sled I have ever ridden and I have lodge a lot of miles on them all regardless have a safe winter I hope you enjoy your ride time and keep the snow dance going !

You don't get it? As a customer you want a better product every year. All brands are good for the competition. What difference does it make if it's labeled Ski doo or Yamaha as long as the sled fits my needs? I love both brands, and I've owned both Ski doo's and Yamaha's. Your comment is on the same level as saying that Ski doo is not a real sled just because Rotax makes their engine and bla bla.

As always they compare but don't actually say anything! khi doo probably has the most unreliable engines in the business with 12k for 800 and 16k for 600 before they hand grenade! funny they never mention that fact! I don't own a Side Winder but I can tell U that when the 850 hits 40 mph all it will see is tail light from the Yamaha! Supertrax is becoming way too politically correct especially with the company they share their bed with! Give me my 5 minutes back so I can use the time on something useful!

Darren Toth All depends on how you take care of it. Had two 800’s one was really taken care of and used to it’s best ability on the trails and the other wasn’t cleaned as well and used in the same way. Haven't seen YAMAHA'S marketing. Just 40 + years of first hand knowledge and 4000k plus per year experience. SKI-DON'T is a POS. Always has been, betting always will be. Etec is disposable, ask your mechanic. They don't even rebuild them, just replace with another POS rowtax. They're light, just don't hit anything and I mean ANYTHING! Local dealer has a guy full time just changing out chassis. Yeah. I want one of them vibrating, disposable mechanics companions. NOT!

Who in the world goes shopping for a snowmobile and has these 2 sleds as a choice. Like a guy standing at the dealer looking at the beautiful light and nimble a pinnacle of snowmobiles the new 850 pretty much flawless masterpiece.... And is saying to himself "hmmmmm this is nice but im gonna go check out the 800 pound cow over at the yamaha dealer" which is literally only good for lake runs.... Thats like being in the market to buy an awesome sports car say the new z06 or m5 and telling yourself hmmm im just gonna go check out the new f 350 ford first before i make up my mind for sure. I would much rather be riding the lighter and more agile and better handling sled any day of the week. Yamaha has to put a hair dryer on their sled to make it go fast and borrow Arctic Cat's chassis. Anyone who doesn't think the worlds #1 snowmobile manufacture aka Ski-Doo doesn't have excellent quality, durability and fit and finish is simply a Ski-Doo hater and cannot handle the truth that Ski-Doo is as good as or better than other manufactures including Yamaha. I will gladly give up top speed to the better handling and riding sled any day of the week. GO SKI-DOO! Hay Yamaha fans, without a turbo making 200 plus horsepower you would just be dating a FAT girl. Good day!

That literally means nothing. 4 strokes are advancing and almost everywhere 4 strokes are used. Cars, jetskis, atv's boats, generators etc. Technology moves forward. Back in the day most jetskis were 2 stroke, now even though they are heavier and 4 stroke you dont see anyone putting a 1000cc 2 stroke to counter the 1.5 or 1.8 l 4 strokes. Top fuel dragsters are also for some reason 4 stroke. 4 stroke advantages far outweigh disadvantages vs 2 strokes, and the gap gets bigger and bigger. Only in the very weight conserving areas such as snowmobiles and dirt bikes are 2t still used, and more and more are converting to 4 strokes.
@halfnelson67776 жыл бұрын
Try high altitude, deep powder. The two stroke would need a turbo as well

Lee Pecinovsky I've never had a fueling issue on any of the carburated sleds I owned/own. As a matter of fact...if a carburated sled does go down on the trail (due to a fueling issue)..there's a much higher chance of fixing it trailside wheras an efi sled will likely have to be towed out.
