In the 16 years it’s been on sale, Yamaha’s TMAX has managed to define itself as the big scooter to turn to if you’re after something with more personality than your average big Burgman, Honda Integra or bulbous BMW C650GT. It’s the scooter to be on if you want comfort, convenience and a splash of attitude.
As someone who spends a lot of time in and around London, the TMAX is only an occasional sight on the city’s streets, but its homelands are Spain, France and Italy, where it’s the maxi-scooter de jour, mange tout.
In fact, the TMAX is the best selling maxi-scooter in Europe but what you need to know is that the 2017 model is the sixth generation of the TMAX. The latest incarnation has received a raft of changes and Yamaha says that it benefits from better acceleration, agility and lower weight. It’s also got a more sporty design with LED lights a great finish (with particularly nicely textured plastics) - it definitely looks more stylish and makes its competitors look reserved. It’s not short on functionality either, and that was obvious before I’d even ridden it, thanks to the keyless ignition system.

Why no mention of the cruise control on the DX? This is a really big deal - I believe it's the only scooter on the market with CC, period. This is definitely my next long distance commuter/tourer...

I needed something more practical that my pampered Ducati Monster so I decided to buy a DX. Great bike... it handles like a sports bike and is fast enough for what I need. Ok the Kymco is marginally faster and consumes more fuel but if I were into 0-60 times I would have bought a four cylinder sports bike. I chose the Yamaha over the Kymco because the latter feels and looks cheap; the Yamaha's build quality is far better. Long story short, I have the advantages of a bike plus the advantages of a scooter - bit of a win-win, really.

Now that the Tmax has the 500,530 it needs to keep upgrading Yamaha needs to keep on going to 560 or 570 or even 600 like the BMW C600 and the C650 sport

Having owned a T-Max 2007 model, went to try the DX. Yes it’s nice, but I found all the electronics, switches & kit all a bit too much. 12 years from my T-Max, nothing has really changed & that’s the truth. Power, ABS, Luggage Space, Handling etc, all the same. Yes it looks very ‘jet fighter’, but you can buy a super 10 years old model for a fraction of the price & spend the money on something not every idiot is trying to steal. Love the bike, but not impressed with the hype!. It’s your choice, your money. I’m keeping my 11 year old T-Max for quite some longer time!………… Have fun. Mark, Amsterdam.

Thank you sir, nice review. we have not received this scooter in the U.S. I think the reason is that unless it has a million horsepower, it is not good enough to buy . Unfortunately the attitude here is still " THE BIGGER THE BETTER".

it is so fat between the knees. I'm on the short side 5' 10". I tio toed more than the previous gen.

Tmax530 is no longer a high performance, but is now an entry-level big scooter. and it is a cheap scooter to buy..
