Front disk brake was not the only upgrade. Yes, 2001 and up saw the change to disc brake up front but that was just the obvious, the electrical system was upgraded from 35W to 55W which made the light output noticeably better. The carburetor was upgraded to a CV style carb, the kick starter was removed, a trip meter was added, the handlebar controls got updated and an automatic cam chain adjuster was introduced. These are all just post 2000 upgrades, there have been numerous over the 34 production years of this exceptional little thumper.

My dad bought a 91’ tw in 2011, one owner with 1100 miles on it. Great little bike, it’s the mountain goat of motorcycles. He sold it in 2015 but the guy who bought it still rides around the small town we’re in.

I, 220 lbs, have ridden one of these in long off road weekend rides and it was awesome in every way. Riding dirt roads at high speed is also possible but doesn't feel as planted. The only bike with tires that work great both on and off road.

one thing is in the 2000's the installed a bigger stator, so the newer bikes produce more electricity, so with led lights it frees up a ton of extra amps for running seat and hand warmers, running phone chargers, etc.

I have a 2010 T-Dub. Just rode it tonight on a short food run. The T-Dub is SO MUCH FUN. Easy to ride, easy to maintain. It's a two wheeled ATV. Safety tip for new T-Dub riders: replace the front tire with a Shinko 241 tire. There's a reason why T-Dub riders call the Bridgestone Trailwing tire the "DeathWing". It doesn't cling to rain slick road nearly as well as the Shinko and can wash out and leave you sliding. That's the FIRST mod you should install! The DeathWing is okay for dirt and trail, but not good for wet roads. The rear Bridgestone tire works okay for everything.

It's kind of an unattractive bike, but I wouldn't mind having one of these. They sound fun. I saw a comment on another video about this bike: the commenter said that his neighbor, who is in his 70s, has one of these, and he rides out with his fishing pole and metal detector for his daily adventure. Here in Houston, the streets are in terrible shape, and flood anytime it rains even a little. So this bike would be good for running errands or commuting in town. Could take shortcuts across the neighborhood lawns and drive right through the road construction zones. It would also be great to take to some of the off road destinations, such as the beach, the desert, the Piney Woods. However, the biggest problem would be riding to those locations. Since the bike is not that big or that fast, it would be hard to ride on the highway, and since it is small, carrying gear or a passenger would be a challenge, too.

great vid, im 62 and ive been riding one for 15 years, ive ridden bigger bikes but this is a fun bike. i also used it for hunting and found its quiet engine made it easy to get closer to game. i now am into exploring the bush and forest tracks with it and am really enjoying getting away from the rat race with it. here in Australia we cant buy the new models as for some stupid reason the motorcycle companies stopped importing them thinking they wouldnt sell here . big mistake . so they are as rare as hens teeth over here.

Picked one up a month ago. I'm six feet tall. Sure the bike is a little small, but it's a lot of fun on the trails. Standing is hard on the back, so I'll be adding 2" handlebar risers. I alsready upgraded the pegs to larger ones as my feet literally slopped off thr stock pegs. A couple of things he doesn't mention: Firstly, the sub-frame at the tail end is smaller gauge steel that the man frame and so can only take a little weight. The manufacturer states is a measly seven pounds. That rack he has on his machine will not improve that scenario at all. For proper weight carriage, you need something attached to the actual main frame. Pro-Cycle sell them. Secondly, he didn't mention how crap the stock skid plate is (and I see he still has the stock plate on his). It's about as robust as a Coke can. Again, Pro-Cycle have much better ones that actually work.

I know this is about Yamaha and Yamaha is great. I have a Yamaha street bike. But I also have a Honda 200 xr. The simplicity and reliability is amazing. I've had it over 10 years and it's just bullet proof. I've put it under water and through the hottest mudiest trails time and time again and have replaced the front sproket, clutch and brake shoes. Of course oil change but that's it. The motor still has tons of compression and it will go all day on a tank of fuel. $10 in gas is a pretty cheap way to have fun on the trail. Bigger bikes are more fun but a lot more money to run and a lot harder to run on tight trails especially when a water pump goes and coolant is shooting out everywhere.

They are excellent trail bikes for those who like to ride slow and enjoy the scenery. I currently have two, one in two states for summer and winter riding. I tell people it is NOT a dual sport because most riders think of the "sport" part of riding and the TW is not a good choice to try to ride quickly. Low and slow is fun! Many of us own faster dual sports for those rides. The TW needs a good skid plate and a better front tire. I just bought a Tusk Adventure tire (130/90/18) to try on the front. Great review!

I had a 1992 just like that one. It was completely stock with the exception of the final drive sprocket. We put a slightly larger front sprocket on it (two or three more teeth than stock) and that gave us a bit more comfort riding around town without sacrificing much if any of the crawling gears. Wish I would have thought about an LED headlight and taillight because it did have some trouble keeping up with the electrical draw.

My 2013 goes went 70 on freeway with no traffic and no back wind. If a strong breeze comes my way, it might take me down to 50 where I want to slow down even more to keep control. I say that being used to 1200 cc bikes much heavyer this thing weighs near nothing

Good bike, owned 2 over the years. They take a real beating, but man they are in need of some weight loss and better brakes. Those front drums were terrible for any type of aggressive riding. I really wanted the disk brake front end for mine, but eh. I moved on. Other than power, they do great on the sand when you air down a lot. Quite fun. I retired both of my bikes do to rusted tanks years ago, but I think you can actually get a plastic tank for them now. I will say, dropping a tooth in the front really makes this thing a tractor, and very good for technical slow stuff.

Great review wish they'd made them in a 350cc option. I have a Honda 82 XL250R love it and always wanted one of the tw's but I do like to go on longer rides and want more top speed. I saw a guy heavily mod a tw with fuel injection and oil cooler and other stuff got a lot more top speed like 80mph

Drop a tooth or 2 in the rear, they are geared low enough to ride off road and be able to cruise 55 once sprocket is changed without overworking the engine.

I really want one of these, but I can't see any way to fix a flat tire out on the road or trail. I am disabled and could not walk out if the bike broke down. I currently ride a 2001 XT225, and it has never broke down, but I have had a lot of flat tires riding in the AZ desert. My XT225 has an aftermarket center stand (no longer available) and also much smaller narrower tires on larger diameter rims. And it is all I can do to repair a flat on that. It would be impossible without the center stand. There is no center stand available for the TW200, and it looks like a nightmare to get those huge tires (which are otherwise one of the main things I like about it, it's almost a 2 wheeled ATV) off the wheels and back on again. In fact on one video I watched a guy destroy a new tube changing it in his garage at home. He ripped a hole in it with a tire iron.

Cool vid! I had a dt50 in 1990. It would do about 5 in 1st and 50-ish. I was 6’3 maybe 200 then and I loved it. I want something now for the neighborhood and to take the kids on a ride. You think the TW would be too small for me? 6’4 230ish now. Tks!
