Yamaha TW200: No Kickstart, No Problem

Hey, wanted to say thank you, I am a new biker with Tw200 and was in the backwoods when I turned off the motorcycle to do something and the battery did not hold enough power to start. Watched your video (luckily had cell service and after finding/pushing to a hill, I was able (after about an hour and a half later and many tries) to bump start from N -> 2 and maintained, getting me home which is good as the sun was going down and it was getting cold! Much appreciated

If you are going to be off-road, new battery every 3 years. Even car batteries don't last much more than 5 years. The 1996 TW I have has both the electric and kick start, which is the ideal setup, but of course they are always trying to trim costs so it is not surprising that they deleted the kick start.

I was hoping a push start would work, without having to roll too fast….and you answered my question. Also, I live in Michigan and it doesn’t have to be very cold for this thing to NOT want to start. In 1987 I bought this strange thing. At that time it had the widest legal DOT tire. I got stopped by cops because it was so unusual, and in PA, they had just moved the location of the inspection sticker from the rear to the forks. So of course cops wanted to know where my inspection was. Needless to say, having a kick starter is a great backup because when you go down, it gives you another option. Hills are not always around, perhaps your in a dry river bed, good luck bump starting there. I rode that bike close to 5,000 miles. The best thing it did was give me smiles. It was slow, had a drum up front, and lacked suspension. But taking those traits and embracing them. Ride it within its limits, low and slow and it went through everything, and down and up the sides of quarries. The metal reusable oil filter was really cool and scary at the first oil change when you see all he crap it caught (initial break in). I traded it for an XT-600 which I rode 12,000 miles. I probably should have kept the TW. It kept me slower and and never got hurt on it. Awesome bike and miss it. Loved the blue/white. Still the best colors they ever had....

I appreciate you taking content from the comments and using it to make a video out of it, good job, funny story, believe it or not, I had to push start my buddies R1 a while back, barrowed his bike for a ride with my wife, short ride over to a nice restaurant, I left the key on the on position somehow, we went in ate had a good time went out and the bike was dead. I kid you not I managed to push start that thing all by my self. you don't believe me, I hardly believe it myself. I am so proud of my self for not dropping it in the process,

Hello. Nice test. Your bike looks new!! I've been in situations where the kick start has been a saver. A dead battery in a rocky, narrow uphill situation could be disastrous. I have been on very narrow trails where it very difficult to turn the bike downhill and the easiest way to go is with the kick start. Also in very muddy flat trails! However, this instructional video was cool and well made. Thanks.

The lack of kick start on the 2001 and newer TWs isn't a total deal breaker for me, but I still don't particularly like it. Bump starting works, but having a kicker on the side of the bike is a lot more convenient. Still, I'm grateful Yamaha didn't do something stupid like put EFI on it that would have made it impossible to bump start on a totally flat battery. 👍

my efi sr400 wouldn't start after I accidentally completely drained the battery. kicked it 30-40 times to see if I could maybe charge it a little to get the fuel injector going but no luck. pulled the battery and charged it with jumper cables off a car battery for a minute and it started right up! neutral light was dim but juust enough juice for the fuel to flow edit: I feel like I missed a good opportunity to see if I could have bump started it

I was worried until I did this little test! I completely disconnected the battery and it still ran fine. The stator has enough power to run the electrical, but you can tell the battery is there to help out with those!

That info. could save someones life if they are really out in the wilderness,otherwise I would carry one off those small lithium booster batteries with a fuel injected bike.

That is a great idea with the lithium jump starter. I had one of those that I used in the shop when someone had a machine with dead battery. I have a Suburban with the 8.1L and the battery died on it due to some lights being left on and my wife was able to use that to jump the vehicle! They are definitely worth having. That was one of the reasons I bought the tw200. It's a great bug out bike. Being that they don't have a computer and are carbureted they're EMP proof! The only thing is I do need a downhill, to push start it since I'm disabled! So I need to figure out how to get all the parts and put the kick-start on.

Cool video. A kickstarter would still come in handy if there was some issue with the electric starter and you were to stall out in a tight spot like a narrow ravine or something. Or mud or sand like someone else mentioned. Good to have multiple options.

I bump started my TW200 a couple of times in my garage, with only about 15 feet of space to run. In second gear I don't even have to hop on the bike. Just be sure that the tire can grab on the floor, my garage's floor is unpainted concrete so not slippy.

I love how easy it is to bump start! I had a lot of fun making this video and since then, a lot of people have told me of other instances where bump starting isn't ideal. But, for the majority of riders the bump start will work great.

I was not aware of this. I have a TW and a larger DR650, but I do not believe my DR can do this without some kind of capacitor modification. These are certainly go-anywhere "Break In Case of Emergency" motorcycles, no doubt about it.

Good Question! The Serow is more designed like the XT250. Is has the same slender frame and if I'm not mistaken the XT250 is what replaced the Serow 225

I don't know how it would run after it's started without the battery connected. I figured the circuit would be not be complete without the battery at least connected. I actually pull started my 650 vstrom with fuel injection. The battery was weak so I used rope to pull with my Tacoma, and it wouldn't start in first gear. After a couple of tries, I put it in second gear and it worked.

Thanks for the comment! I ran the bike around for a while without the battery hooked up (Although I don't recommend it) and the only difference I noticed is that the lights would flicker. It ran pretty well without it, but I would only do that if I had to. I know some people have installed kickstarts and removed the battery and haven't had issues. That is an awesome bike!! Those older bikes had so much character! I'd say one of the pre runners of the cafe racer era! I was sliding down a dirt trail yesterday trying to bump start it, second gear wasn't having it, so third it was!

The ability for push starting is a definite advantage however there are times where that is not possible. If you are off road in a deep sand wash, or in a ravine where there is no room for push starting, or on ice, a functional elect start or a kick start are mandatory. A kick start can be added to a 2001+ TW by installing a kick start kit from an xt-225 although they are becoming scarce. An alternative (and costly) solution would be to buy the pieces individually form Yamaha. If you have a newer TW and plan on keeping it, the expenditure is definitely worth it.

Just one word of warning never ever let go of the clutch before you are seated because when you not properly seated and the bike fires it will jump out of your hands and you'll never be quick enough to control when not completely seated when it fires.

All you gotta do is push the bike, pull in the clutch, shift into second or third and let go of the clutch. The rear tire will catch and cause the engine to turn over. Be ready with the throttle to catch it though!

I have a TW 200. 2001 I decide to put a kickstart on it. So I went through parts break down On a 1998 and All the parts are available individually The cost is not that Bad Less than a couple hundred dollars and about two hours of labor.

Yamaha, should make a kit 2002-2021 tw200 kick starter. But yes, you can put one together. Mom and pop dealer would probably take the time, and get all part numbers, and prices. Big city dealer, probably tell u it can't be done!

So how do you push started when you're at the bottom of a Ravine going in the terrain is so rocky that you couldn't even push it 1' by yourself. That's what happened to me up at the Grand Canyon. You can put a kick start on those which I'm going to. It cost about $400.

Great video Mat.ive been researching and I'm ready to buy my first bike. Problem is I narrowed it to the tw20 pop and the crf250l. I'm stuck on the 2. I'm afraid I might regret it if I go with one of the other. Did you ever consider the crf250l? And if so why did you go tdub. I'm 5'8" and I have some what of short legs and arms. Hey, Thanks! Yeah I was trying to decide between the TW200 and the CRF250L as well. I chose the TW200 for a few reasons. First, the seat height is lower than the CRF. This was good because if I were ever out on a trail and needed to put my foot down for anything I really like how much easier it is to reach the ground. Second, the simplicity of the TW200 without the fuel injection is something I really liked. If the battery dies I can just bump start the bike and get home. With Fuel injection, without the battery you'd be stranded. The TW has been around for more than 30 years and the durability and longevity of the bike has been proven time and time again. The only thing the CRF has on it is that it is a six speed transmission and is better for the highway. So I chose the TW and I haven't looked back since! I hope this helps and really, both bikes are awesome and it was a lot of time for me looking at both bikes. The TW fit more of what I was looking for, but you really can't go wrong with either. That's a good question, but also really hard to answer because each rider is different and each terrain will be different to each rider as well. Great thing about the TW is that it has a really low seat height which will help putting the feet down on rough obstacles and it is pretty low geared right from the factory so that is also helpful in rough terrain. No, you don't. The only reason I disconnected it in this video is to show that if your battery is completely dead you can still bump start the bike.

I prefer the small bores to have a kick starter up to about 250 cc's. Would forgo the electric start. The battery doesn't last that long, maybe 3 years, so you aren't saving much money. Now a 450 on the other hand, whew, that takes some kicking!

It's an easy choice between kicking my foot or finding a hill. They should have felt it alone instead of messing with the bikes biggest selling point it's reliability to save a few bucks.

Dumb questions here... 1-So does the battery have to be disconnected in order to bump start on the trails or was that for demonstration only?? 2-was all you did was just get a running start and it just starts up? You mentioned you started in 2nd gear but if the bike is on and “in gear” the back tire seizes up correct? Unless I’m supposed hold the clutch in while I get a running start!!! Please explain for a dummy like me I have the same bike.. sorry so much mobstreet

I was always told that there was never such thing as a dumb question! 1- I only disconnected the battery for demo purposes, simply to show that there wasn't any electrical power hooked to the bike. 2- I had the bike in neutral and started running and pushing the bike. Once I got to speed I pulled in the clutch and shifted into 2nd gear. Since neutral is in between 1st and 2nd gear, shifting into 2nd or even 3rd while rolling is pretty easy. Hope that helps!!

No it isn't fuel injected. It was a real toss up between this TW and the Honda CRF250L which is fuel injected. But, i didn't want it to go out on me on the trail if the battery died. So I went for the more simple option!

Nah, the bike has a carrying capacity of 397lbs. I am sitting at 240 and I take my wife and my kids with me all the time and it carries us all just fine. I did add a 52t sprocket to my 2019 and I prefer that over the stock 50t sprocket. I think it'll work for you!

In all honesty, I am not sure why they removed it. The spot is still in the case for the kickstart and they make kits to add them to the machine. I wouldn't let it sway me from buying the bike. It is still reliable and dependable as all get out and I know guys that use these for farm use and don't worry that they don't have a kickstart.

I have looked through the TW Forums because this is a common question among TW Riders. If you want, you can buy a pre-2001 and it will have the kick start stock from Yamaha. From what I have found, there is a dealer on the west coast in Bend Oregon, Bay Area Yamaha that sells the kits for the newer models. They are all stock Yamaha parts. This is the route I would take if I were to install one. The update on the post states that this dealer sells the kits for $269 USD. In all honesty, now that I know you can push start the bike, I'm not worried about adding the kick start and would rather use that money for the Cycle Racks front and rear rack.

I just had this happen again to my bike. My battery died and my kids were out riding and wanted me to ride with them. So, I just got a running start and bump started the bike and was able to have a good afternoon with the kids still. I need to take it hunting still.

Having to start a motorcycle with a dead battery by running is why I sold my Honda Transalp and bought a Yamaha XT with kickstart. No manufacturer produces new bikes with kickstart, so I will just ride old bikes. I seriously don’t like having to run to start a bike

I'm autistic but I do know that will a carbureted engine in the event that it is flooded push starting it is the only way you're going to do it regardless of a Kickstart or not well at least that's the only way I've been able to do it otherwise you have to let it sit for a while

Sorry, a kick start is needed. If you stall on a trail or in mud it's 100% needed. I don't know why it was removed, but IMO needs to be on there for a degree of safety.

I don't think Bub started and kickstarting you know the same thing what if you get stuck in the mud and your bike gets cut off and electrical isn't starting the bike with a kick start you can kick start it right there you're gonna like bump started if you're going down hill somewhere not stuck in the mud I think that getting where the cake start was cheap

You have to be careful where you stick the red positive wire when the bike starts 12 volts is being sent through that wire to the battery to charge it and if you have it touching any metal you will short out your stator . Your lucky you didn't burn it up . Always put tape over the end of the red positive wire . What were you thinking . How do you think your battery stays charged up ? If you noticed the light lit up right away proving 12 volts is being sent through the wires . Once you have the bike started put a tester to that red wire you just pushed out of the way and see if it has 12 volts on it . Guess what happens when you touch that red wire to the frame or any ground that it could have very easily have done . Since your being so stupid by leaving a hot 12 volt line that comes straight from the stator bare , go ahead and touch any metal part with it while the bike is running so you can see what happens and what parts your going to have to replace .

Thank you for pointing that out and I will make sure that doesn't happen again. Pretty thankful it didn't hit anything while I had the battery removed.

Would you mind letting me know what those conditions were? Like I mentioned above, I tried riding in the snow, but the bike wouldn't go anywhere! That's with almost 240lbs along on that rear wheel and the sucker just spun. I also tested out on a dirt road on a bit of ice. I got it to start once, but not the second time. Plus, I was concerned about laying the bike down riding on those conditions.

I know my limitations and riding in the snow is a definite no with the TW. I don't know what other terrain people are riding the TW's in and that was the reason behind the question. @@MOBStreet83 100% worth it. You can still crank them to the point they die but they really are better then lead acid. One of the biggest benefits is that you can leave them for months on end and not have to use a` tender. My TW's sit all winter with no tender and crank right over come spring. I run a shorai in one and the other has a anti gravity. I like the anti gravity better just because it has a second set of terminals on it which is great for hooking up accessories, just make sure they dont put any sort of drain on the battery when the bike is off, lithium ion batteries dont like that. They seem to last a long time too, my Shorai is like 4 or 5 years old now and still cranks as good as new, the anti gravity is like 2 . As far as a charger goes you can get a NOCO Genius trickle charger for like 30 bucks that has a lithium ion mode on it. I know shorai recommends their own special one but i would ignore that, the NOCO works fine on it. It works great on the Anti Gravity one and the factory one in my Honda Africa Twin as well.
