Yamaha U3 verses U1

I like the rapid back to back comparisons and the advice about how loud the U3 is, ie not getting carried away by it being "better" - not something most reviewers would point out!

You are right! When I transferred my U3 to my new "tiny house" Its volume was too loud that I had to place some foam at the back to absorb the excess volume otherwise it sounds harsh.

Thank you for this comparison. I've had a beautiful walnut U1 since 1977. It's been around the world with me and recently, due to a bad sea voyage, it had to be completely restored by a Yamaha restorer. It is now in virtually new condition and sounds as good as it did when new. The U3 is nice but too big for my small space. If I want a big sound I can always take the front panels off my U1 and play it with the strings exposed. Sounds beautiful that way!

Taking the panels off a piano is always worth trying if you like a full loud sound. When I tuned pianos for customers they were always amazed at the difference. If you don't want to risk damaging the casework then try just taking all those photos off and just lifting the lid. Even on of an upright this can make quite a difference.

Pathetique 6:46 U3, 7:12 U1 Flipping back and forth, I hear a more full, resonant sound from piano on the right than piano on the left, which even sounds just a tad muffled at first. Great video and opportunity to compare. Yes, that U3 might be overpowering in a small room.

I know, it's cringy isn't it! It was fine when I practiced but when the record button goes on my fingers just do not correspond to my brain :-)
