Nice repair on the snowmobile! I've worked on a number of vehicles over the years where the troubleshooting was pretty easy but replacing the parts was the far more difficult part of the job!

I don't mind doing my own mechanical work but I really dislike having to do it on an unexpected breakdown. It's unfortunate that your task ended abruptly from this but its good you were able to get the snowmobile home from the forest. And since you're an experienced troublshooter and mechanic you were already ahead in the game before even picking up a tool.

Well done Simon, you just never know where the next curve ball is coming from. Getting parts is harder than ever and far more expensive. I wonder if they are trying to price the average joe away from I.C.E slowly.

Well.. you are hereby awarded the "Never give up Award"... I would have done what you mentioned.. set the s..t on fire. Yamaha's are good machines, snowmobiles, outboards and mc's.. but they are too finicky, too heavy and have too much doo-da's that can fail. Just my humble opinion.. and some of my friends too who have owned Yama's and changed brands because of it. I have great experience with Polaris, both Wide Traks and standard tracks, but I'd guess any 2-stroke wide track would do the job when it comes to working in the forest. Anyhoo.. I hope the old Viking last a few years still and get the job done.. Stay safe out there🙂

I agree with everything you say totally. It will be the last Yamaha snowmobile I own though. I had ready good experiences with MC's when I was younger but would like to try a Polaris or some other brand unless this lasts then I will not need another. Thank you, Take care.

Hi Simon, I have 4 of these VK10's in Alaska at a remote homestead. I got them all as used machines and have been working 'em hard, too. So far they have been mostly reliable, only one has given me grief, and because of that I nicknamed it the "evil Greta Thunfish" as it only runs when the battery is charged fresh! - It also has starter troubles and makes wild trashing sounds when it does start the engine (if/when). I bet that I will find what you found inside the starter and that I will have to do the same repairs for sure. I really appreciate your video! - The price of the Yamakaze spare parts is just outlandish, obscene bad. I had to order a starter as well (sigh)... Best Regards from Alaska, Lars
@arctic-rebel
@arctic-rebel 4 ай бұрын
Hi Lars, now I have see my own and one other at the dealer you can bet that is exactly what you will find. I know from watching some of your video's you know your way around engines, I cannot remember a worse starter to remove but has to be done so I hope I gave you some useful hints to save time. As you also know they are really good machines when they are working but not so easy to work on. Good luck and be safe out there.

@@arctic-rebel Hi Simon, Thanks for your response, appreciated. I will only repair that mess when I have the other pressing issues at that old homestead under control: There are so many dangerous trees there that have either already fallen into each other or are already onto the buildings etc, I have to deal with that first and its bad stuff and I do lack experience logging deadfall and windfall. I can use luck and will try to be safe out there. Landing the airplane on the ice yesterday was exiting enough. Best Regards from Alaska! Lars

Hello from Northern New York State. So the starter field magnet disintegrated. That was the problem, and in my opinion, it was NOT caused by the very many start cycles. The magnets are glued on, and after time, the glue fails, magnet crashes against armature windings & gets busted up. Wonderful engineering! About your firewood: is that Gray birch or Paper birch?
@arctic-rebel
@arctic-rebel 5 ай бұрын
You are correct, thank you. I did see several at the dealer that came from 2015-2018 models so not an uncommon issue. It is white Birch or paper birch. I can find Gray here but not so common.

Well done problems like this can try your patience, would it be possible to fit a larger radiator to the machine for extra cooling? Thanks for sharing cheers Simon 🌲🌲❄️
@arctic-rebel
@arctic-rebel 5 ай бұрын
Hi Terry, you can retro fit almost anything to anything if the need arises but I don't feel the need for extra cooling. There is only a issue at the end of winter when temperatures rise above -10C and it is not a problem if you turn it off when not running, this also saves fuel and a 1000cc Yamaha engine uses fuel !

@arctic-rebel

Maintenance is not problem for me, pulling the huge weight is the issue and at the time I needed a wide track with a lot of power to get up and down the hills. At the time this Yamaha seemed like a good idea.
