Excellent video! Giving the torque specs on the cover bolts, keeping track of which hole each bolt needs to go back, progressively tightening them down is important when you have steel screws going into aluminum threads. Exactly the way I would do this. Thanks for taking the time to do this

Working on my 2006 v star 1100. Did first oil change and it took a 4 day weekend. But I have full one piece exhaust and the right side saddle bag with a larger battery inside that. It all had to come off. Nut positions and clearances made grind and narrow a 13 m wrench. But it all gave me time to get to know my bike. One thing the dealer I got it did a oil change and check out of the bike and they used permatex instead of a exhaust gasket. I did think ahead and had bought 2 because at a idol I heard rather a valve click or exhaust leak. Exhaust gasket made the difference, nice clean sound. Watched some of your other videos and it's all good stuff, by the way next time for this bike I'm going with a external filter kit. Thanks

Never had a V Star, but I had a bought new Virago 1100. I changed the oil and filter every 3000 miles. It had 118,000 miles on it when I sold it, and was still running fine. A problem I have with removing the exhaust pipe every 3000 miles is the gaskets. The gasket between the header pipe and head should always be replaced whenever the pipe is removed. I have also had a lot of problems with those graphite bushings used on Japanese bikes where one pipe slips over another pipe. Those tend to cost between $15-$20, and usually get damaged when you remove a pipe. So it's not just a matter of more work and more time, but likely more cost for parts as well.

I wish I had a filter relocation kit for mine, it would be so much easier. I use an old antifreeze jug with a side cut out, fits perfect under the frame. Also, I have to ask what oil you're using that is thinner when cold? As a mechanic for almost 20 years, I've never seen an oil that does that. Even the OE Yamalube is thinner when warm.

Hi good video, I have an 1100 virago and the oil filter cover looks similar, on mine there is another o-ring in the bottom bolt hole of the filter cover, looking at your v star it looks like you also have one. Just a warning, on my first oil change, I didn’t know about it and lost it in my oil drain bucket, needless to say, when I started it it leaked like a sieve. I now always have a set of all three o-rings on hand when changing oil cause i have needed to change them due to breakage.

Thanks again brother, your video's have saved me so much time with not having to look through old pdf manuals that are not nearly as descriptive as your videos.. I am basically doing everything that I can to my 2000 V Star 1100 Classic this week. My carbs turned out excellent, can;'t wait to ride again! The only issue that I have experienced is getting the original air box reassembled....the tubes connecting the airbox to the engine keep sliding off! I am thinking about using spray adhesive, what do you think? I know that you have the Max Air System, and I will have to wait before upgrading to something like that, I have two teenagers who take all of my extra money . Ha ha. Tomorrow I hopeful wrap of the airbox, complete the oil change and then on to reinstalling the baffles that were removed by the previous owner ( I bought new ones) Thanks again for everything, you are an excellent teacher.

@@retrotechandelectronics Hello again, just want to say that the heat gun worked perfectly, the bike is now fully reassembled and I took it out on short test ride to ensure that everything worked and then out again the next day this time on a 52 mile ride. In the 2 years that I have owned my 2000 V Star 1100, it has never ridden this well, so I am very grateful to you. I have one final question if you don't mind : At 70 miles per hours the bike seems to vibrate, and I don't know what causes it, because at 80 mph it stops. Again, the only time I ever experience vibration is between 70 and 80 miles per hour. Any ideas on what could be the root cause? FYI the tires are still in great condition, I was thinking that maybe I should have the tires professionally balanced? Could that be it or maybe the carbs need syncing? Thank you again.

I agree completely that for the cost of the relocation kit, potential problems that exist, and time it takes to install, it’s not worth it. Unless you put a ton of miles on the bike and change oil and filter every few weeks, and even then it’s risky. I have heard horror stories.

This is a great motorcycle! This oil and filter change is perfect for the DIY like me. However, this just seems like a lot of work to change the oil and filter. I'm looking to buy either a bike like this, 2005, or a 2007 Honda 1100 Shadow, which makes the oil and filter change much easier. Both bikes have less than 9,000 miles on them. Which bike would you recommend?
@retrotechandelectronics

Aside from the Oil change... Which is a minor affair. Having often worked on both the Honda Shadow 1100 and the Vstar 1100 I find the Vstar to be superior in both quality and ease of maintenance. The Honda only wins in the cooling department.

I have always 1...Drained out old oil with Bike on side stand, 2....allowed draining to go overnight before refilling and closing up. Also I would like to add....while draining overnight you should loosely place Filler Cap on to prevent possibility of anything falling into or getting into it. I had a buddy that was draining out his oil and as fate would have it [murphy's law?] dropped a screw right through the hole....I'm sure you can guess the rest. .No,.....He fortunately knew he did it but had a bitch job of getting it out.

There is, its a metallic ring. It only needs to be replaced it it leaks. I think Ive replaced one, once in 10 years and thats because I broke it.

I really enjoy your videos. I bought a project bike..Yamaha dragstar 1100 ,1999. I have everything back together cleaned carbs with the help of your video but when I start it , my oil warning light comes on. What do you think?
@retrotechandelectronics
@retrotechandelectronics 6 жыл бұрын
Hello, Im glad my videos were helpfull. My bike is from the same timeframe and in the last few years the oil light sender has gone a bit wonky. The first question is always of course asking that the oil is filled to the proper level with the bike situated in the balanced upright position on level ground. With that out of the way I wonder if your light goes off when you lift the bike upright as mine generally does. I suspect ill be doing a sender unit swapout video in the near future. Some argue the wrong oil can cause this but I used Yamalube so its out of the question. Lemme know..
@jottow680

the oil light is only a level sensor. mine comes on when its started until i level the bike then it goes out. sometimes it comes on when riding then goes out. if you can see oil in the sight glass when the bile is level your good. Mine started sucking oil out of the breather after i drilled the pipes out. so it was drawing oil up into the air box. i fixed this by adding pods and re jetting. hope this helps.
@halmorse5879
@halmorse5879 5 жыл бұрын
One of the Reasons is there can be a tendency for Air bubbles forming in the oil near the Sender causing false readings...the Bubbles should usually disappear once you are riding and movement and pressure is happening in the system....

Get the relocation kit, save the headache of breaking one of the bolts for the exhaust in the head. He did a lot of unnecessary steps. Some difference tho, I don't have floorboards I have pegs, also once the exhaust is off the head I can slide the front half of the pipe out and gain access to everything. I didn't mess with my brake resivoir because it wasn't in the way. To save myself the headache of breaking a bolt in the head I did the relocation kit. 3.5qts of 20w-50amsoil synthetic. Never have to worry about breaking a bolt or taking my exhaust off for no reason. My oil change went from an hour plus to to 20mins

Does anyone add a couple ounces of seafoam before an oil change and run it a few minutes to thin the oil and internally clean the engine? I do it sometimes on my vehicles, have for a long time.
@retrotechandelectronics
@retrotechandelectronics 4 жыл бұрын
I would never add seafoam to my oil and intentionally thin it out. The clearance between the parts and all of the endplay is designed for specific viscosity. Seafoam would break that film down and wear down the mating metal surfaces.

2 hours in and it’s possible to get the exhaust off. Just can’t get to one of the bolts. So, after looking at the oil filter cover, I’m wondering if I even need to take the exhaust off. So, trying to drain the oil first to see if I can then get the oil filter cover off. But no, can’t even get to the oil plug to losen. Might have to put the whole thing back together and take it in for a $200 oil change. Nothings easy.

Some people on very tight budgets use a very rough repair of using a quarter, nickel or dime depending on size of the sight glass along with JB weld. I actually did this repair myself when the the front master cylinder sight glass broke.on my old 1985 Honda Shadow VT 700, it worked well, for many months up until, I got around to properly fixing it

no they just wait longer to change the filter. manual says oil change every 3k and filter every 6k. but now i can change the filter every oil change. and you are supposed to change the filter when the oil is hot. that means hot pipe. the second time i changed my filter i had the relocation kit.
@retrotechandelectronics
@retrotechandelectronics 5 жыл бұрын
You are not supposed to change the oil when it is hot, thats non-sense. Your supposed to change the oil when gravity brought it all down into the pan, where you remove it. There is zero benefit to heating up multi-weight oil other than waiting around for it to work its way down again not to coat the whole engine with it right before your about to dump it...smh

Remove exhaust system is only two bolts. They remove fairing for super sport motorcycles, four cylinders are much more expensive valve adjustment, more expensive wheels and insurance, … Difficult to find lower maintenance cost for 1000 cc. This bike is more reliable than a car. The only bad point, this is some optional electrical accessories on this motorcycle. The engine is hot and then after 20 years, these small electric cables can break . Do not add gadgets and you do not have any problem. Vstar can use regular fuel but you spend more money for your fuel because you will do a lower mileage.
@Nine_883
@Nine_883 2 жыл бұрын
Not worth it and not recommended by Yamaha. Some kits have failed. You can get a Toyota exhaust gasket for a couple of dollars that fits perfect. I have had 2 of these bikes. It takes an extra few minutes. You don’t need a bleeder kit either, but if you do a lot of work on cars and bikes it can be worth it. Oil filter relocated kit is not necessary unless “maybe” you put a ton of miles on the bike and then you want a proven kit and for that you will pay the price of about a dozen oil changes and even the filter price increases by about 500%.
