The only way I was able to get pods to work on my CV carbs on my 1980 Suzuki TSCC 16v 1100 was to use the Suzuki intake boots, use oversized pilots and a 130 main jet, I did not modify the slide vacuum ports or springs, instead I opted to run additional thick covers over the pods, this effectively increases vacuum and meters the air flow to a more constant velocity, the throttle response is very similar to the factory air box, with the exception it makes a bit more power clear through the rev range via it's open pipes and bigger jets.

It's possible to tune our CV carbs. Main jet 150, needle around 4mm higher through spacer and adapting the nut above and building the stock velocity Stacks shorter and fitted them into the pod filters. It runs great without any problems :)

I own a 1982 yamaha xj1100 and your series of videos is what I needed to see, this one being the key one. The factory carbs on mine I have rebuilt but I don't think they are worth tossing much more time into. Bike was parked 10 years ago with fuel and despite cleaning the carbs out, there was no white death, number 3 wont work at an idle as it should. The YICS I've bought the tool to shut off and still I don't think it dis that, vaccum gauges were bouncing all over the place and there was no way you could sync the carbs for your life. I'm sure at this point I'll be doing the same carb swap as you have done and I did find the RS36-D8 K and would you recommend just getting those since they are already 77-85-77 or go with what you got, the D3 and do the mods to make it fit? Engine om mine is strong, has been in the family over 20 years and very well taken care of, just carb issues is what im chasing.

@ANDY5
@ANDY5 4 жыл бұрын
G’day mate, going strictly from memory here. I think that I only had to move two carbs because it was only the centre measurement that was different. You obviously will need to remove the screws for the rails, or loosen them at least. I think they’re slotted. Remove the caps from the top of the carbs to reveal the shaft that the slides are actuated from. You will notice that there are extra threaded holes in the shaft to allow you to reposition two carbs further inboard. You will need to remove the locking screws for the synchronision mechanism and then slide the carbs across, there was some fiddling with the accelerator pump mechanism too I think. It should be pretty obvious as soon as you get the carbs all loose and can move them.

Dude, the intro for this video is hilarious. I ended up getting a set of carbs from an 05 ZRX1200 for mine. My #4 carb has a broken float post with an old epoxy repair that the petrol had turned into goo. I did the whole mill/thread repair. No joy. The only things I can get that carb to do is flood (pissing gas out the airbox) or starve (not a drop of gas in the bowl). Even with #4 starved, the other three were running excessively rich, no matter the adjustment. How do the ZRX carbs run? I'll let you know, IF my new throttle cable ever arrives.

I installed my RS36 carbs. Huge improvement over the previous carbs. However, around 2500-3500 RPM, under high engine load (accelerating ) it backfires through the carbs. Seems they're leaning out, but where? I dropped the needle clips one notch, and adjusted the pilot screws to one turn out. Mine came with the 120 and 125 jets sealed in the bag, so I presume the 130s are already in the carbs. Perhaps I need to pull them to confirm their size? I used the gaskets that came with my new carb boots, and used Aviation Permatex Form-a-gasket on both sides of the gaskets to seal them. Perhaps I need to remove the gaskets and just use the gasket sealer between the intake boots and the head?

Hi Andy, Let me start by thanking you for all of your videos. They are very helpful indeed! I know this is an older video and that you've changed to newer carburetors. In fact I have the very same problem with my carbs as you had in this video. All four have broken pilot screws where the tip of the screw is stuck in the seat. I still hope to be able to save them by drilling out the tips. Anyhow, my question to you is related to the vent/breather hoses. A previous owner fitted pod filters and routed the vent hoses to the inside of the pod filters by cutting holes in two of the filters. To me, this solution does not seem ideal. What was your plan for the vent hoses? Best regards, Robin PS. What happened to your old carbs?
@ANDY5
@ANDY5 4 жыл бұрын
Remove the hoses completely and point the tee down towards the ground. The hoses play havoc and pointing them down should keep incidental water splashes out of your fuel bowls. CV carbs are very vacuum sensitive and variations across fuel bowl, air correction jets, diaphragms etc causes all sorts of headaches. But plugging them into a pod filler is a bad idea, IMHO.
@fortj3
@fortj3 5 жыл бұрын
I finally got tired of throwing good money after bad on my CVK36 Keihins. When they run right, they're great. Trouble is, mine run poorly much more than they run right. They will alternate between running too lean (though they're jetted properly for the bike as set up) and flooding. So, I've ordered the RS36 Mikuni carbs to go on my 1981 XS1100. I plan on running K&N pod filters and a much more open exhaust. I have a pair of Cobra mufflers that I got cheap that are a straight through, glasspack style motorcycle muffler. May or may not put lollipops in them after it's all together and running right. So, what suggestions do yo have for me regarding tuning the Mikunis? At first, I'll be running the stock exhaust and either the stock airbox (with K&N filter) or the K&N pods.
@fortj3
@fortj3 5 жыл бұрын
I hated to spend that much on carbs but at least ordering parts will be like ordering parts for a Holley or Edelbrock performance carb, instead of having to try to get carb parts for an exact bike or trying to find carb parts for another bike that will work. The commonality of parts across the Mikuni RS range should be a huge benefit. Then, there's the whole flatslide pumper vs CV carb thing. Where I ride, there is very little difference in altitude. If I rid up to the mountains, I'll stop at my buddy's house and re-jet as needed.
@ANDY5
@ANDY5 5 жыл бұрын
G’day mate, I can tell you that you won’t be sorry. They will transform your bike. They will come with a jetting guide and a selection of jets for the configuration you bought for. I just followed their recommendations for an 1100 and I haven’t had to touch them since. Let us know how you get on.

All let me think that is lean but the sparks are black the fuel screw are 1/2 turn out (if i try to close all them the bike keeps running) manual say the is the max out turn raccomended.Any idea? Hey Andy! Im building my own XS1100, and it is a pleasure to follow you. Do I understand you right, when you say that the standard carb won't be able to perform with new air pods?
@ANDY5
@ANDY5 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Magnus, thanks for tuning in. You will be able to get the standard carbs to work with pod filters but getting them to perform is problematic. CV carburetors require the air to be delivered in a smooth and balanced way, due to the sensitive nature of the diaphragms, air correction jets and emulsion tube design. If you want to ride the bike on a regular basis, and you want it to perform, my personal feeling is that you should either keep the factory airbox, and fit a K&N filter, or fit non-CV carbs. At least don't cut any of the airbox mounts off the frame until you have tried and are satisfied with the result. You may want to have a look at this video too kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKWZeaepnMyWp7c Cheers, Andy

So, my new RS36 Mikunis came in and I have a question. The bell crank for the throttle cables has two holes for each cable, push and pull, for a total of 4 holes. Does it matter which of the two holes I use for each of my cables, or does it depend on the individual bike and cables? The reason I ask is because mine is a 1981 H which is the Venturer (factory fully faired, touring version) and the OEM handlebars are longer (pullback bars) than the bars on a standard. As a result, my effective throttle cable length will be a little shorter. I was thinking I could use the two holes in the bellcrank that are closer to the bracket for the carb end of the throttle cables. I noticed you used the other two cable holes in the bellcrank, but yours has shorter bars than mine.
@ANDY5
@ANDY5 5 жыл бұрын
G’day mate, use whichever holes best suit your cables. If you’re fitting them to something like a Venturer have you got a strategy for connecting to the factory airbox, or are you going to run a different filter arrangement?

@@ANDY5 I have K&N pods for them, and a pair of Cobra 6002 slip on mufflers.($300+ mufflers, I got them for $20 at auction) I may run my OEM airbox and mufflers for a while. I have a set of modified OEM velocity stacks from a spare airbox that I modified to use with the CVK Keihins. I can use it for now. I may have to jet them a little leaner, for use with airbox and OEM mufflers? I haven't looked yet, but I'm pretty sure the 130s are in them. The 120s and 125s are in a bag in the box. I have a couple of other options for exhaust, if the Cobras don't work out. I do want to stick with the 4 into 2. I like the sound.

And a reasonable question at that. No particular reason mate, I knew these were available for the FJ1100 previously so I just gravitated straight to them. You could say the same thing about why not Lectron too, thanks for tuning in, Andy

I don’t have much experience with them, I had similar carbs on my CB450 but it was all factory. Can I suggest that you try reaching out to a Honda specialist? Two KZbinrs spring to mind, Cody at Motorcycle MD and the boys at Common Motor Collective. But be warned, trying to diagnose bike problems by proxy is very difficult. I would also suggest that you ensure your ignition is all good. There is an old saying, 90% of carburetor problems are electrical.

Hi Aga, they are called Cobra clamps mate. I think a company called Norma make them. They’re excellent clamps.

+Andy's Motorcycle Obsessions Yer funny. I'm loving your XS11 vids. I'm looking at an '81 XS1100 Venturer for $2,000.00 US that looks to have been very well cared for. Just have to decide whether to leave the touring gear on it or make it into a standard or a cafe.

i have a kz750 and everyone says that the rs34 is too big and hard to tune, and ive heard different....anyone have any input? If you can adjust the accel pump and change jets....not sure why it won't work with a 750?
@ANDY5
@ANDY5 4 жыл бұрын
G’day Carl, CFM is the issue. If the engine is over carbureted the air speed through the venturi and the subsequent ineffective pressure drop is the problem. No amount of jetting will compensate if the fuel won’t lift out of the float bowl.

Having said that Mikuni do list the RS34 for KZ750. 115 main jet, P-4 needle, position #3 needle clip, 17.5 pilot jet, 1/4 to 1/2 turn on the pilot screw. Mikuni kit #RS34-D21-K

@@ANDY5 yes ive done some research and a lot of guys like the Keihin cr over the rs for the cr has smaller bore options, but for me a set of cr 29mm is over $1000 US and the RS is around $650 US... and personally i like the looks of the RS carbs for the flat slide.

I completed my build (WISECO 1196 kit w/RS36 flat sliders from Tom at MikuniOz) Summary on my channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z17cq3V9h8SCl5Ysi=IaXJV0482aZm4yYl A question if I may: Ignition vacuum advance on the OEM Mik BS34 CV carbs is ported from an orfice just behind the throttle plate on carb 2. So at idle there isn't (and shouldn't be) any vacuum advance but vacuum advance starts as soon as you open the throttle blades. On the Mik RS36 there is no such port so at idle you have full vac advance which is not good for a smooth, stable and low idle. What did you do and did you solve this issue or do you just live with it? Thanks!!

If you watch the video until the end I actually cover this. And it does work well.

@@ANDY5 I don’t want to haggle you with minutia but I have watched all you videos and they were absolutely instrumental for my rebuild. I learned so much and am grateful. My block was cracked at the rear clamp bolt below the oil line because the previous owner unbolted the head bolts first. Anyways. I did your irrigation valve mod and it works fine EXCEPT at idle. Since the vac comes from the spigot you have a full vac signal to the advance unit and that makes for a terrible idle. On The OEM carbs the vac port is closed at idle by the throttle blade. I installed two irrigation valves. One to dampen the vacuum signal and a second one to shut it off like when riding around town. With vacuum the ignition has 26° advance at idle that’s way too much. You only need the 10° static advance for a smooth idle. I resigned myself to the fact That ported vacuum (vacuum signal that only is given when the throttle slightly open) is impossible with the RS 36 carbs. People that modify the ZRX carbs. actually drill the carbs for a ported signal to correctly provide vacuum advance. I could eliminate vacuum advance but the fuel mileage drops into the low 30s or even 20s.
