This is a class D amplifier board that is great for 12v battery power. I put it through the usual battery of tests (see what I did there?).
Send 'tronics to JohnAudioTech for review/teardown:

John you're brilliant. I like the idea of playing music that you like and then telling interesting tid bits about it. That's a unique thing to do and makes your content stand out from the norm. That's just my most humble opinion. Bravo good sir 👏👏👏

I like the way Yamaha seems to always under-estimate their wattage ratings on products.

Many thanks for telling about distortion&noise at low sound levels! I had no idea about that issue, and I often listen to at low levels.

Robin Trower made this video even better, by the way James was also the bassist for those that don't know. All members are/were exceptionally talented.

Hi John, I bought this Yamaha board with bluetooth 4.0, I have not tested it yet but I am very impressed with the overall build quality of the board as well as the size, it is smaller than a credit card, can't wait to put it through it's paces!!! :) :) :) :)

Maybe you are talking about the YDA138? As I am not seeing any YDA148 bluetooth boards around. Barely any regular amplifier only YDA148 boards.

John, another measurement you might for these amplifiers you review would be the DC offset for each channel. Some class D amps may output 100 millivolts or more of DC.

Nice amp and nice speakers too. Do you have a video of them being built?

Great video! If you'd like to, I would really think a video where you compare different classes of amplifiers be really interesting - I mean compare a Class A, AB, C and D. But maybe it's not really comparable since there's more parameters to the different classes than the type. Anyways, if you could do that in some way, it would be interesting!

Hallo John, I am quite sure you did a test on a red Yamaha class D BT amp without the green connectors on the board. Could you please point me in the direction of that video so that I can figure out the connections for it. The board only has the number 1 next to one solder hole, is that 12v+? By the way I am very impressed with the build quality of this SANWU amp. 👏

Your finger has skin pain threshold of approx. 55°C. The IC has themal protection that starts to kick in at 155°C, releases at 130°C, and goes for permanent shutdown at 165°C, with maximum thermal rating being specified as 150°C elsewhere. It looks like the IC would have been quite comfy working at 140°C for its lifetime - finger being too hot doesn't seem like a big reason to abort the test. I just have a K-Type thermocouple and a roll of Kapton at hand and all multimeters i have can read temperature. Also not sure why you describe the datasheet as big, it seems pretty benign, i usually have to work with 300 page datasheets and longer. And yeah there's configuration pins for setting the limiter and compressor that were probably left as unpopulated footprints on the board, some 0-Ohm resistors go there depending. I wonder though, is measuring on a resistor rather than speaker or speaker inductive load simulator a really good idea as far as performance analysis is concerned? Wouldn't you want to know what kind of distortion it could come up with in real world use as opposed to into a straight up resistance? Maybe a divider from speaker or simulator back into RMAA? Or do you have reason to believe that it shouldn't be relevant? I didn't have my hands on any D-Class amps yet, well at least not ones that weren't absolute toys, and i haven't been able to arrive at an answer that would 100% convince me by myself, so any insight would be appreciated.

I've used this very board in my main, only, system, as I swap out various boards. I like this board very much and it remains a favourite. I also have a tiny Indeed TA2020 amp which I like. A nice EL34 tube amp. A very old Adcom power amp and many other boards. This little Yam board remains a sentimental favourite though. I got mine from Deals Extreme or some name like that. USD $10 or so. Cheaper in your country...

Firstly let me say I love the pace, detail and general information in all your videos. You inspired me to make a bluetooth speaker out of some old Mordant Short 402's, they are rated 4-8 Ohms 15-100w. After taking them apart they have some circuitry inside. I guess to split the sound to the tweeter etc. Do you have any suggestion on a small amp which would suit and also do you think I should take out the bits inside the speaker and connect directly? Newb to doing this but really want to get some input from a pro. Thanks for all the great videos, some of the information is starting to sink in I think. :)

Thanks for the kind words. I'm not familiar with those speakers but the circuitry inside is probably a crossover network that sends the high frequencies to the tweeters and low frequencies to the woofer. Don't remove that as it can mess up the sound of the speaker and the tweeters can be damaged. Any of the amps I reviewed and found to be good should work fine even if rated less that 15w.

John you may hate us audiophiles but would be great to me if you could listen to these amps with two properly positioned speakers in a room and give us some of idea of the soundstage and so forth. Two speakers jammed together and saying it doesn't sound distorted doesn't say much about these things.

If you dont drive it past clipping on a 4 ohm load, I bet heat would not be a problem. You probably are still only around 1 watt continuous even at that level.
