Hello, thank you for your review! I’m interested in learning to play a saxophone longer term, but right now can’t buy one + it may be too loud to practice. What would you say would be the potential issues if I first learn on YDS 150 and then transition to a real saxophone? Vielen dank

Thanks for your question. The biggest issue will be embouchure and intonation, for sure. If you start practicing with an YDS-150 and want to transition to a «real» saxophone, you will most probably not be able to produce a sound at all at first. With the YDS-150 you can just blow into the instrument to play a «nice» sound, but you will need to learn the proper embouchure for a saxophone. This could be very frustrating at first, because it will take time to learn it and your intonation will be bad. You might even have more problems to transition if you get used to a «wrong» embouchure on the YDS-150. Furthermore, you will also have to press the keys harder on a saxophone, although this is not as big as a problem as the embouchure. The only thing you can learn on the YDS-150 and adapt relatively easily to an acoustic saxophone is the fingering, I think.

@@ewiplayer thank you very much for your extensive response. How many hours of practice / total lapse time (months or years) would it take to develop embouchure? I’m concerned that if I get a real sax it will be too loud for neighbours plus it’s more expensive on average. Many thanks again!

Well, I am no teacher and no professional musician but I guess you can think in different steps to develop embouchure. First you have probably to practice the «easy» tones, which will take at least a few weeks until your embouchure is good enough to extend your practice to more difficult tones and the higher octave(s). This will take at least months, even a year or two, but your sax sound will still be far from «perfect» then. It depends of course on how much you practice, your talent and what your goal is, but all in all, it will take years of daily practicing to develop your embouchure.

Das Instrument tropft wie ein "normales" Instrument. Es gibt ein einen kleinen Luftkanal, der durch das ganze Instrument bis zum Becher verläuft. Dort rinnt dann auch der Speichel raus. Diese Röhre kann/muss man allerdings nicht reinigen. Das Mundstück lässt sich wie jedes andere Saxofonmundstück mit einem Tuch reinigen.

Das YDS-150 ist auf 440 Hz gestimmt (ist anpassbar). Die meisten Sounds sind dann analog ihren akustischen Verwandten gestimmt, als Sopran-/Tenorsax in Bb und Alto/Bariton in Eb. Die anderen Sounds sind in C gestimmt.

Hallo Christoph! Ich habe in einer Online Beschreibung gelesen, dass das Gerät Bluetooth MIDI fähig ist-für mich wäre hilfreich zu wissen, ob das Gerät im Midi-Studio von Mac erkannt wird und man darüber andere Sounds ansteuern kann (z.B. von SWAM) danke für jeden Hinweis und dein Video!

Vielen Dank für deine Frage 🙂. Da ich Windows- und Android-Nutzer bin, kann ich dir leider keine definitive Antwort geben, aber ich habe Bluetooth MIDI soeben kurz wie folgt getestet: Ich kann über Bluetooth mit dem YDS-150 auf meinem Smartphone (Android, Nokia 7.2) ein MIDI-Instrument in BandLab ansteuern und spielen. Mein Smartphone erkennt das Instrument sofort als «YDS-150 MIDI» und das Verbinden der beiden Geräte über Bluetooth hat problemlos funktioniert. Insofern scheint Bluetooth MIDI zu funktionieren. Hinsichtlich der Bluetooth-MIDI-Funktion des YDS-150 ist die Kommunikation von Yamaha aktuell aber nicht eindeutig. In der deutschen Bedienungsanleitung steht, dass man das Yamaha YDS-150 über Bluetooth mit anderen Geräten koppeln kann - allerdings wird in diesem Zusammenhang von Bluetooth Audio gesprochen. MIDI wird nicht erwähnt. Bei den technischen Daten steht hingegen, dass das Gerät der «MIDI-Spezifikation Bluetooth Low Energy» entspricht, was ich so interpretiere, dass Bluetooth MIDI uneingeschränkt funktionieren sollte. --> Aus der Anleitung ist für mich somit nicht klar, ob Yamaha eine Bluetooth-MIDI -Funktion als «offizielles Feature» des Instruments unterstützt und garantiert oder ob die Bluetooth-Schnittstelle in erster Linie dafür gedacht und optimiert ist, die Yamaha-eigene YDS-App anzusteuern (und ich einfach Glück hatte, dass bei mir BandLab auf Android über Bluetooth MIDI funktioniert).

Kann man das Instrument auch komplett über Kopfhörer spielen, also ist es zu 100% "stumm" spielbar? Das wäre fürs nächtliche Üben in der Wohnung sehr interessant.

Ja, kann man. Die Phones-Buchse auf der Seite des YDS-150 dient zum Anschliessen eines Stereokopfhörers (3.5 mm Mini-Klinken-Stecker). Die eingebauten Lautsprecher geben keinen Klang mehr aus, sobald an diesem Anschluss ein Gerät eingesteckt wird.

ich wünschte, ich hätte mir das Video über das YDS150 angesehen, bevor ich das Roland AE30 gekauft habe. Ich muss ganz ehrlich, dass ich mit Ausnahme des Klarinetten- und Trompetensounds von dem AE30 äußerst enttäuscht bin. Die Saxophone mit Ausnahme des Bariton-Sounds klingen so gar nicht nach Saxophon. Unnötig, dafür so viel Geld auszugeben. Ich werde sehen, dass ich das AE30 so gut wie möglich wieder los werde und kaufe mir dann das YDS150. Selbst aus den quäkigen Monitorlautsprechern klingt das YDS150 viel besser als das AE30 aus einer hochwertigen PA-Anlage

Too bad it's not a sax, it's a WINDBAG. All over the world the orders for this hype-sax were cancelled by yamaha. No one knows, when and if the production will continue. Literally BLOWN! 非常失望，YAMAHA！很丢脸！
