once you hear yamaha's crossplane inline-4 in person there's no other type of engine that can match the sound. deep & rumbly in low rpm, melodic and throaty in mid rpm and screaming like a demon on high rpm. perfection!

​@@DennisMerwood-xk8wpThere's definitely a distinct tone to this engine that you won't find in the ones you listed. The BRM comes somewhat close, but it still lacks the harmonic shriek that this thing has at high RPM.

@@griffinfaulkner3514 So you have never heard Mike Hailwood's Honda 250 6cyl then? It has a harmonic shriek at high RPM that you will never forget once you have heard it. NOTHING matches the sound of that engine. Except Ago's MV's maybe.

@@DennisMerwood-xk8wp I listened to it, and it's still not the same tone I hear here. It's odd, the RC166's engine note is excellent, beautiful even, but it's also consistent across its rev range, like a violin tuning up and down. It's almost too smooth to describe as a shriek, and as good as it sounds it's not what I'm looking for. What I'm hearing from this bike is that initial crossplane rumble developing a secondary, much higher-pitched overtone as that rumble shifts to a consistent drone. It's something I've only ever heard from odd-firing engines at high RPM and even-firing engines with an X-pipe (Ryan Tuerk's Judd-powered Formula Supra is an excellent even-firing example). It's that secondary tone that I love, and it's incredibly hard to find vehicles that have it.

Aprilia V4 sounds even better in my opinion. Has the very deep rumble you mention and then screams even more beautiful in higher revs!! Especially with Austin Racing or SC Project Exhaust

​@@Oat_meal_YTNearly? By the last few years of the Gen 4 car they were turning close to _ten_ thousand RPM at the short and mid-size ovals, especially during qualifying. They didn't come down from those sorts of RPMs until the Gen 6 car had its horsepower gutted, though the engines are still more than capable of those kinds of RPM if they ever decide to open them back up again.

It's not the exhaust layout, Yamaha uses crossplane crankshaft design to mimic the characteristics of V4 while still being an Inline 4
