Even though this is how Japanese 2 strokes engines have been working since the 80s, it is magnificent to see that there's still one Japanese manufacturer that promotes and makes 2 stroke engines. Seeing as the other 3 has stopped manufacturing many of the older parts this year (2021), it's time to move over to Yamaha! Yamaha prevails gents!

@@longlivekawasaki what’s amazing is that Yamaha haven’t changed their 125 and yz250 2stroke for over 15 years and still kept up with KTM that has been updating their 2strokes for all those 15 years. Says a lot about Yamahas motors! Plus they last longer than the other 2strokes as well. I’ve seen so many postings of ppl with KTM’s having all sorts of motor problems. Plus ppl I’ve talked to at the track. I want to get a new Yamaha 2 smoke after seeing a couple this weekend. The YPVS system is genius. I'm kind of slow with mech tech and studied a shop manual for a YZ250 power valve system for 2 hours once then closed my eyes and pictured it in my head with the forces from the gyro flowing to the linkage to open up the valve. I love simple mechanical solutions problems they are much more beautiful.

An old, simple but so effective idea from YAMAHA that managed to change the 2-stroke world forever. The way YPVS enriches the power curve puts many 4 strokes into shame. Back in the day I could open the throttle of my DT200R without much care on what revs and gear I was in and the bike was accelerating without complains. Dead easy to work on those bikes too.

I had 2 Yamaha 125cc DT's. The first one was from the early 90's and the second was brand new in 2001. If I remember correctly, they were identical, only some minor changes in the YPVS wiring and some small stuff. :D The second one was stock and I didnt know how to bypass the YPVS, which was used to restrict the power. After I sold the DT, I found out that they had the YPVS wires crossed so it worked backwards.

Yes, Yamaha still makes some 2T engines, but to be honest, they haven't put a lot of R&D into their 2T motors in a very long time. Yamaha's emphasis these days is clearly on 4T technology. I would respectfully disagree with you that Yamaha's 2T motors are industry leading. There are other manufacturers that continuously strive to improve the performance of their 2T engines, and I would argue that some of these companies produce superior 2T motors (KTM and BRP are just two examples).

Yea that true to an extent, the money you save on the yammy though you can drop in aftermarket parts and it’ll be just as competitive as any of those Austrian bikes for about the same price. Pick your poison I ride with two guys who have 350sxf and they got more top end but my yz 250 is a lil quicker, I do have boysen reeds and a turbine power core 2 pipe though as well. I do agree though, I’m a die hard Yamaha fan but they’ve been out classed more recently when talking about factory models. Still more reliable in my opinion, cheaper and easier to find parts too. Everyone should just get whatever speaks out to them. There all competitive for the most part.

This is demonstrating the fuel loss inherent to all 2 stoke engines. When the piston is down forcing fuel into the combustion chamber, fuel escapes trough the exhaust port. Meaning smokey dirty emissions. This system yamaha has come up with is to use exhaust gas to push the fuel back into the cylinder before the piston closes off the exhaust port. And as everyone knows more fuel equals more power. This is a new approach to that problem.
I have a 1985 CR80R with the ATAC valve. It's useless. They ditched it in 1986. It was short lived, only available in the 1984 and 1985 models.

@@1980VINZ yeah maybe I am young but, in my country they haven't sell a single bnew adult size 2strokes anymore for the past 20 years only chainsaws and tiny mini bikes. From what I've known, they took out 2strokes from street use because of emission standards. So if Yamaha improves this system I am hoping to see a KTM 350EX killer that complies with this bs emission standards.
