No comparison. The CS-80 should be your 'flagship'. The Montage has some impressive stats, but most of us would still choose the CS-80. If I didn't know anything about these synths, and only heard the instruments playing in this clip, I would think that the CS-80 is the latest and far superior product here, no matter the limitations. Would love to hear Matt with some solo time on this CS-80.

I felt like it's an advertisment for the montage, tbh it just made me focus on commenting here for "bring back cs-80" we realy don't care about "unlimited layering" we care about pure unstable analog sound which makes my day a little bit better for every chord I play !

Companies don't want to admit it, but they're all cutting corners on new equipment. whether it be roland, yamaha, moog, korg, or whatever

Well, it's very difficult to make an inherently unstable electronic circuit stable. On the other hand, it's not difficult to make a stable digital circuit unstable. Just use the DSP, or run it through a poor quality guitar pedal. Instant low-fi gratification.

I don't understand this foolish hype about "instable" instruments. You probably never recorded one of them on an analog type reel to reel recorder... Hours lost cleaning heads and checking speed to get a proper recording...

So ..... the most LOGICAL question is .... WHY Yamaha still has not tried to make it again? Modern analog electronics are way more advanced now, combined with digital we can have a new CS80 that is lighter and more stable.

Why make a digital CS80? That defies the point. Just reissue the original 1:1 but w midi and usb.

Maybe team 'B' is coming with a "B.S.80" 😎with16 poly voices...they have plans for one, but you know team 'B' it wil take quite a few years, after a lot of teaser prototypes, but eventually they wil deliver.

Ouch, the difference in sound between CS-80 and Montage is ENORMOUS. CS-80 sounds fatter, richer, crispier in every possible way compared to Montage. Doing yourself a disservice Yamaha…

The montage would sound incredible…….if I didn’t just hear the cs-80 here . lol . They shot themselves in the foot with this one. Trying to convince people a modem digital can sound like the real beast.. but hey to each their own. Some people say you can’t tell a difference between Arturias vsts and the real thing 😀

I sold my original CS80 and now I have the amazing M8X. No regrets... 2 note polyphony vs 400 notes polyphony ...

Just make a modern version Yamaha. It would be extremely easy with today's surface mount electronics. For anyone who questions this, Behringer will make one in the next few years and prove you wrong. I'd rather see Yamaha do it though.

The CS-80 is one of the most sought after synths because its so expressive. It needs a re-issue and preferably by Yamaha. More stable, modern circuits that replicate the original as well as the poly AT keyboard (and NOT A DIGITAL EMULATION) and that doesn't weight 82kg! I recall Yamaha mooted the idea a couple of years ago and it all went quiet. Such a shame. I did hope they would team up with Dave Smith when they gave him the Sequential name back in a similar way Dave worked with Tom Oberheim on the OB6.

The Montage M is certainly amazing. The sound engine with AWM2, 16-voice AN1x, and FM engine. I wish I could see the VL/VP sound engine in the montage. There's nothing more impressive to me than synthesizer producing and acoustic type of sounds with all the nuances and expression. Sampling is great and all, but nothing beats virtual acoustic synthesis of the Yamaha VL1.

Get a Deckard's Dream CS80 in a shoebox does the same thing if you have an Osmose, etc. and you can wiggle the note bends. Even more insane with the software you touch a field and it designs the sound for you and you can save all of them. In several ways it's better than the CS80 & you can buy it now. It's got MPE, auto-tunes too the CS80 wishes it had. It's not actually a dream it's available.

CS-80: we still yearn for a new one Yamaha. When the IdeaScale site opened in 2017 it was pretty much the first suggestion. I feel like the glorious Yamaha analogue lineage died a death with the birth of the DX7.. and it's a crying shame Montage M8x: Excellent that we have an expressive polyphony-aftertouch keybed return. Great to have the AN1x engine in there for more analogue type synthesis. I would love to see it improved in the following ways: - Enhance FM-X to include the features the FS1r had that the Montage M is still missing - VP1 and VL1 physical modeling engines would make it even more of a beast.. both of these synths had their own characters and it'd be lovely to do justice to both of them in a modern flagship - MPE (if it doesn't have it already) and an ~6U 19" rack version that doubles as a wedge shaped desktop module - White versions of the keyboards.. Montage always looked killer in white B)

@Dom @Matt: Please pester YAMAHA to adopt a policy of *finally* adding PIANO-ROLL midi editing to future firmware updates for their flagship workstations - whether stage performance or arranger range. Yamaha put piano-roll midi editing to products in the past. FOr example the highly lauded QY700 MIDI Sequencer back in late 90s. PIANO ROLL should be a no-brainer feature in any hardware, whether incorporating a touchscreen or not

CS80 has one type of sound, Montage has many. Guess it depends what you want to do with them. Wouldn’t want a CS80 other than to sell and buy a Montage M lol.

I love both of these guys, but I really don't see how the montage m is so great. They could of at least added cs80 filters, then it would be 100% worth it for a montage. But they chose to go all digital and you can house it all in your pc. The ANx engine doesn't sound anything like authentic analog. I need someone to educate me on why I shouldn't just keep the montage og, 3rd wave, and meris X pedals, and would ever possibly want a montage m. In fact why not just sell my montage, I can get the better version with a 100x better dac and amplifier on my pc, it's probably even better sounding than on the montage m too!!! It's just a dedicated Linux pc slapped in an rgb midi controller with a mini display...

Montage doesn't have the sound... I'm not a synth snob, I would use anything, but the sound is what it is, or isn't... and the closest to analog is now coming from the best plugins... Montage sound is lifeless. If you can't hear the difference then you shouldn't be making synths.

The CS80 sound on the montage is a joke. The real CS80 sounds lush, melodic, fat, and these high quality weighted keys with polyphonic aftertouch must be a dream to play, all like a real instrument. The montage has none of that.
