It's very possible. Or at least a very good analogy of it. Notice the high tech gear that these soldiers are wearing and the advanced bipedal robot that recorded all of the girl's memories. This suggests that the "timeline" of this video is in the far future. But I'm sure no other race but the japanese can relate to the total and utter destruction of something as devastating as a nuclear bomb. Lives and memories gone in an instant. You can't imagine the pain they must've suffered as a people.
I think Yamamoto was trying to show us that bad luck happens to the best of us, and that we all cope in different ways. In this case, retrogressing or "deleting" all of their memories in order to move on. Life can be extremely unfair sometimes as shown by the sequence of events, and the music only brings out the emotion further as we are following the subject's life and wishing her happiness, only to be extremely disappointed by the outcome. When I think of the director and this video, I can only think of the one real life event that this may be based off of: the bombing of Nagasaki. Who knows what people were doing before that bomb dropped, it could be as simple as enjoying their lives, or as happy as just getting married the same day.

very good, probably the most realistic Blender animation I've ever seen.
after many years, this short video remains as my absolute favorite on youtube. For those of you who think this video is depressing, think about it a little; they lived more or less a stable and peaceful life, and in their final moment, they were at their happiest. What more in life could a person ask for?
Aardvark1111, please do tell us two things. 1) What anti-American elements? 2) How does that impact the beauty of this film? I thought it was amazing, a good, clean story, nice models, textures, lighting and renders. 5 stars and an instant fave.
I cried watching this video, this is really a BEAUTIFUL piece of art! I wish that this video gets a lot of recognition!! Great job!! 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I think the robot didn't have emotions of the past. The robot just recorded it all, it's up to humans, us as viewers to feel the emotions in the robot's place. Because we know how memories, specially happy ones, are valuable, we feel sad when it all gets deleted. I think this is what makes this video unique and beautiful. With no words or feelings from any character we are sucked in into it's sadness. It's like the girl died when the memories were deleted, not with the explosion.
