A lot of people were saying IRyS' old design was too busy, but what's funny is I honestly don't think her new design is THAT much less intricate. They just cut streamlined it a bit by cutting out some of the elements that were less noticeable or didn't work as well in Live 2D. Like I never noticed the wings on her dress until this video pointed them out. (It kind of reminds me of my own approach to character design, where I just throw every idea I have into the initial concept and then in later drawings pare back a lot of the extraneous detail) I do kind of miss the color scheme of 1.0, though. Her new palette still looks great and has a lot of pop, but there's something about the darker colors in 1.0 that keeps drawing my eye.

A few minor notes: - The redesign was not initially Cover's decision, but IRyS', she pushed really hard for the redesign. It had been in the works for over a year, which explains the lack of new outfits (why bother making a new outfit if she's going to change models?) - She was able to remove the halo and wings in her 1.0, this was not a new feature of the 2.0. - Bloom and Gloom are not representations of her audience, they are her mascots. Her audience representation would be "GuyRyS", the stickman character she often draws on her schedules and shows up on her stream. Also, she stated that B&G were not added to the outfit at her request and that it was a choice by Redjuice to include them.

As someone who loveeeeee Irys’s artist’s work, I personally think the problem with her vtuber model are mainly only because the sectioning and rigging. As you said, the artist might not understand how layers supposed to move in live2d and the rigger might also had a hard time trying to adjust face perspective to match with the art style. The original nose might be able to come out a lot better if they section the layers differently and rig a ‘whole face’ differently. I believe they just need more communication between artist and rigger. They didn’t have to redesign her. Only need to fix the model itself a little. But mehhhh who cares. Now She has 2 designs from a very talented artist and that is super cool!!!!!

Agreed. I’m so glad Redjuice got a second chance to show that with proper understanding of Live2D, he could make something hololive fans would be happy with. I do think that there is something to her first design being too complicated. She was going to have a new kimono outfit and then it just didn't happen. The changes do seem to come down to being more Live2D friendly. It's easy to focus on her looking more like the other members, but I think it was less about that and more about shifting to techniques that are known to work.

Thank you for adding your insight to the discussion! I think from a marketing standpoint, hololive needs to balance how similar and different each of their talents look. I personally tend to like unique looking VTubers, but from a business perspective, the design still has to appeal to the core audience hololive has already built to be successful. Like I mentioned, I think it would be different if IRyS was designed for an indie talent. Then the 1.0 art style would’ve been fine, it just would’ve needed some tweaks for live 2D to look fluid. That’s my 2 cents on the matter anyways!

One thing: It's been repeated a lot how 3D would have been a problem with her old design - but that's not the case at all. If anything, a 3D version would have fixed some of the issues, like the limited motion & perspective shifts or the lost details from her hair being hidden. And rigging her "complex" hair would have been much easier than for other members. You could treat it like a singular _very_ wide braid and have it move as one; setting good limits would make it _much_ easier to deal with than things like Calli's or Ina's dozens of individual strands, or outfits as complex as Sora's dress seen in the video. All the other issues with the design would have still applied, but there wouldn't have been any 3D-specific challenges with it.

This is a great breakdown! I personally adored Irys’ 1.0 design *because* of how different it was from the other Hololive girls - she had some quirks but it was so intricate and experimental and I loved that such a big agency let something like this happen. Seeing her 2.0 model in action, its definitely objectively better as a Vtuber model - she looked *so* clear and smooth and expressive, even with out hearing her I could feel how happy she was. Still, I miss how mature 1.0 Irys looked. I love cute characters, yeah, but when *all* the big Vtuber girls are wide-eyed, round-faced, and moe-looking, Irys’s design… forgive me for this, but she kind of gave me hope for the future of big Vtubers. She was beautiful, mature, her eyes were smaller, she had a real nose, she even had full lips and dark lipstick! Her new model is noticeably lighter themed, obviously she’s brighter and has much less black in her design (i miss the contrast), but also feels more…girlish? Her eyes are still smaller than the other girls, but they shrunk her nose and lightened her lipstick and turned her hair into pigtails with bows… Idk, personally I preferred the more mature, less cute look, just as a general character design preference. Irys herself does have a bright, bubbly, girlish sort of personality though, so I kind of have to admit to myself that this look does probably suit her personality better, too. Oh well. (Sidenote, I think you’re the first bat-themed character who actually keeps the bat nose and I love you SO much for it, plus the little curls on the side of your hair and the shape of your ears - absolutely precious. Overall, I’m really glad redjuice did the redesign, I was worried that he would drop or be dropped for someone else. I think it’s really clear that he learned a lot about designing a model for live 2d in mind. While the nose style has changed to the traditional dot, you can still see some gradient along the nose, especially in motion. Which I think is a nice subtle touch, many other anime style noses barely have that gradient and is just a dot (and in some cases like Coco’s old model, there was barely a dot/nose at all lol). As for the smaller horns being omitted, I wonder if that had more to do with the dual halo redesign? The lower halo might’ve visually clashed with the second set or horns. My only complaint I have is the 2.0 color palette might be a little over saturated.

Yes, I am relieved to know redjuice wasn't dropped too! He really did an excellent job. Yes there is a bit of blush underneath the dot that hint at more nose! Definitely better than nothing! Impeccable analysis, also about redjuice they're really popular back then in my local art community. When I saw them being the mama for Irys it's nice to see them finally getting into vtuber model designs, like seeing "old friend" finally getting places. Also the criticism is understandable because one rarely nail something in the first time, that does happen to me too when I first tried Live2D. If sometime in the future I want to create vtuber models I would ask for some secondary input on it to see if it works before pressing the release button.

As someone who routinely doesn't have the energy to watch longform content and thus also doesn't usually experience the full context of these kinds of developments, this was a very helpful and informative video. It also helped me to articulate my own personal misgivings about IRyS 1.0's design, as I agree that the way it was designed was not tailored to the medium it was planned to be used for. A point that wasn't specifically said in this video, but was somewhat alluded to, that came to my mind is that one of the biggest issues with the model in relation to its usage for Live-2D was that its level of complexity caused there to be less overall motion possible in the model's rigging, causing it to look rigid and stiff. One of the highlights that makes Live-2D such an impressive medium is the ability to make 2D artwork move in such a way that it gives the illusion of 3D or 2.5D motion, and it seems that the truest extent of this might be the context that Redjuice was lacking while creating the 1.0 design. I also agree that the amount of variation in all aspects of the 1.0 design made it difficult for any of the details to stand out against each other, making it difficult to know where to look. Put more simply, it lacked obvious focal points and guiding lines. While I also really liked the darker palette of 1.0 to set her apart from other Hololive members, the lighter palette of 2.0 definitely seems to match her personality more (based on reports from other Holo members discussing their recent off-colab) and you can definitely tell that Redjuice learned a lot about this medium through this experience and applied those lessons to the 2.0 model. Hoping you don't mind the unsolicited tangent here, but I also have some points to suggest for the future of your own model since you mentioned wanting to revisit its design, and I hope I can word things in a constructive way that could be helpful ^-^ I know that looking into this stuff about another model doesn't always translate in a person's brain when they look at their own work, and being able to help you do that is what I hope to achieve with this. Of course, if you've already done your work on your model and are satisfied with the result (I realize this video is a month+ old), feel free to completely disregard the rest of this comment ^-^ For what I've just seen of your model in this video (the first vid of yours I've seen ngl), I can see a similar level of rigidness that I saw in IRyS 1.0, namely in the hair and facial features. Your hair would benefit from more variety of shading & texture to give it a stronger sense of depth. I get that the design leans towards a more simple palette and bleach-blonde hair is certainly very bright, but when the outfit of the model has more shading overall than the hair then the elements tend to clash in an undesired way, and the same could be said about the shading on your face. It's also very difficult to distinguish the base color of the hair from the highlight, to a level where the highlight streaking across the front is very difficult to notice. It all gives the appearance that the base model and the outfit were modeled separately with different shaders altogether, and were not intended to be used together in the same setting, which could be true for all I know but it generally shouldn't be obvious if the outfit is something intended to be used regularly. Another note on the hair is that it doesn't feel like it has any weight to it, which I understand is more on the rigging side and I don't know if you rigged your model yourself or had someone else do it, but it's regardless something to keep in mind moving forward. To clarify, when I say it doesn't have weight I don't necessarily mean that it has to look heavy or weighted down; I understand that some people genuinely have hair with so much volume that it looks like puffy clouds (my own hair gets really puffy too if I don't manage it). What I'm referring to is more its range of motion; while this is a common thing among vtuber models, it's also an element of real life that I feel is really what influences the application in Live-2D models, and that is that people's hair moves around a lot, sometimes even from the simplest motions. Even when it doesn't make large, exaggerated motions, it still sorta pulls and stretches with the movement of your head. Your model doesn't have much of that range of motion in the hair, which contributes to the sensation of it looking flat. Sure your more reserved body motions might be a factor, and in no way am I telling you that you need to change that and be more expressive because you already are expressive enough simply through your vocal tone and manner of speech, but the bigger factor is just in the way that the hair follows your movement; rather than feeling like it's rotating with your head three-dimensionally, it looks more like your rotating a 2D plane in 3D space and just looking at it from different angles. A possible way to alleviate this might be to make the middle and end portions of the hair slightly less poofy at the bottom and to have a higher relative range and speed of motion, but that's just an untested theory and might not work for you. I think the most important element here is to reduce how much it reaches out when you reveal one side and increase how much it hides when you hide the other. My only other main advice is to make your nose more visually distinct. What I mean by this is that while yes it is visible and noticeably larger than the common style presents, it is difficult to visualize its shape in 3D. Because your body language is more reserved, there isn't much opportunity to see even a partial profile of your face, which makes the overall shape more difficult to make out as the model is presented in this video. This is actually a case where more complex shading on the nose similar to what Redjuice did for IRyS 1.0, or even just some additional shape lines or shadows, would be a powerful tool to help sculpt the intended shape of your face and nose. Overall I do like the overall design of your model as it's very cute and has its own form of uniqueness. This is merely an attempt to help you enhance it further as you continue progressing, and I hope it finds you well.

You made some great points I hadn't considered when first seeing IRyS but I will say I am glad she is so much more expressive now it really seems like the lack of expression on her model was holding her back a lot in everything she does. If anything I would say the greatest improvement is in the rigging. My biggest criticism of her original design would be in how stiff she appeared even by vtuber standards, especially in the arms, the hair and facial expressions. Now she has probably the best movement in the EN branch. Tsui did amazing work. My other criticisms of the original design are that it was overly complicated, seemed kinda blurry in the face, and her expression seemed stuck with a distant blank look in her eyes. These appear to have been addressed, except for the first. The new model is not much simpler, her hair and skirt are only slightly less crazy. As for anything in the new model I would consider a downgrade: I miss some of the asymmetry of the original.

I think another point is on the colour palette. Since the original design was much darker it made all the details much harder to make out and distinguish, so on the skirt and hair it was harder to tell where one thing started and another ended without looking carefully at it.

Agreed! The color palette of the 2.0 definitely helps clarify and unmuddy things!

nice analysis! I think Roberu from holostars has a similar problem with his painterly style. it just looks a bit odd when his head moves, and the shadows/highlights are very obviously painted on his skin and not moving naturally xD the skin on live2d vtuber faces kinda needs very simple lighting to get realistic 3d movement. I'm looking forward to the direction you take your model in the future! it's interesting seeing how you've changed and refined your themes so far :D
@YamAlbat Жыл бұрын
Yeah. Nice connection with tying back to Roberu, he totally has the same “painterly style” side effect. I’ve also found that the less shading connected to the base of the face, the easier face angles are to get right. Live 2D face angles are honestly hardest part for me (as you can probably tell from my own Live 2D model). Speaking of my own live 2D, glad to hear that you’re excited for my 2.0! I will be taking my time on it to make sure it is a proper successor to my 1.0!

I am hoping the success of IRyS redesign and Azki new visuals will convince Cover that, although drastic, there may be merit in allowing their talents to update their official designs overtime, understanding that this is a much more involved process than simply getting new outfits/hairs/accessories. We may not want to admit that a vtuber's visual impacts their success metrics, but the numbers don't lie.

Wow. I watched the reveal stream and her excitement and happiness were palatable. We're all so happy for IRyS! This deep dive into the redesign was extremely interesting to listen to and watch. You earned a sub. While I'm not an artist, I really enjoy the theories and thought processes behind designs. Drawing, painting, molding... many art mediums have been developed over thousands of years, so I'm thrilled to see Vtubing come into its own. Especially considering we're all able to communicate and collaborate using the Internet. Works like this video will contribute to Vtuber design's further development, and I'm very enthusiastic to see where this whole thing will go into the future.

Your deep dive analysis is one of the most wholesome and sweetest I have ever seen. I am extremely disappointed on why was this recommended to me just now. My take on this as a Day 1 gang IRyStocrat and Nephamily, when I saw her for the 1st time it was a unique design that the only thing that came to mind, that it reminds me of Roberu from Holostars JP. Roberu completely stood out for me in terms of Live2D and 3D. This is why it didn't bother me that much when I saw her, plus I was more into her as a streamer and singer than what she actually looked like. I won't delve too much on the reasoning of the design/rigging since I rather hear it from herself but there were a couple of streams that she noted on her 1.0 designs; like her reaction when she saw it for the first time, some rigging movements she added that we IRyStocrats didn't noticed, and everytime she talks about outfits during her 1.0 she always explained that it will be delayed and keeps telling us to be patient. I really feel bad about it everytime she tells us that and has to explain some things, but after hearing her cheerful announcement and her excitement about the 2.0, it really uplifts us long time supporters and when we saw it, you bet we all balled in tears and cheered for her cause you really can tell she worked hard to push this through. Like you said in the end part of the video just like her lore she really did sound happy and joyful when she became 2.0 Plus as a long time vocaloid fan, I always believed in Redjuice's skills seeing how he adapted to suit IRyS' request without completely changing her appearance, really speaks on how amazing of an artist he is, cant wait to see more of his work on his daughter!! (yes we need prominent nose vtubers huhuhu)
@YamAlbat Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing your insight as an IRyStocrat! I always appreciate hearing from regular viewers of the VTubers that I do design deep dives on! I personally attended her debut and could absolutely tell she was a gem of a talent. I felt so bad for her when a portion of Twitter erupted into a collective negative buzz about her design. From there I kept up with her music a lot more than her streams, but the clips from her streams I did watch never disappointed. I saw clips of IRyS mentioning the delays in her outfits and then finally mentioning a “big change” to her model. I knew that once that big change actually happened, NEEDED to drop everything and make a video on it, because it may just have been the most anticipated Live 2D model in VTuber history. Seeing IRyS and her fans so happy with the 2.0 made me so happy. She deserves to have a model she 100% loves! This was the happiest I’ve ever been making a video this far! Sorry for rambling as a response, I just had a lot of fun with this one, and I’m glad you were able to appreciate it!

An excellent breakdown of both designs and highlighting redjuice's overall style, and the changes he made to fit the particular aesthetics seen in hololive models. I will say though, the opportunity to have made IRyS 1.0 a 3D model would have been a modelling magnum opus for the people who do their work at Cover. That design would may have been great in that form, even if it really shines as still illustrations. I love the 2.0 design for the transformation that it represents for IRyS, and you make a good point about it fitting into her lore, even if that wasn't an idea in mind with the redesign. Also, the choice of having Brian Tsui do the Live2D rigging accentuated a lot of design cues, and makes her more expressive. Also, first time having heard of you thanks to the KZbin recommends. Gladly subbed. 👍🏾

For real, if hololive would’ve gone for it and commissioned the IRyS 1.0 in a 3D model, it would’ve been amazing to behold if the artist could nail it. There’s also the possibility that the artist couldn’t get the 3D to be believably accurate enough to IRys though. Brian Tsui was a good choice for the 2D rigger too! Hey thanks for giving my video and channel a chance!

One of the things people did to show how different her model was to paste her face onto other models. Hers and Anya's were completely different and in some cases unsettling. The thing I miss is her putting on different colored stockings. I like that touch, but I'm just glad that she is so happy with the new model. You could tell how excited and happy she was throughout the entire reveal and in the stream afterwards (even if she was annoyed with the Tofu). I'm not counting on it, but I really do hope she gets her 3d model in time for Holofes.

Thank you so much for this design breakdown! I adore redjuice's art style and was saddened but understood at first the initial mixed feelings people had with Irys's debut design as in motion it felt instinctively "off" perhaps due to how the painterly rendering would warp strangely in 3D space motion. As an artist with a love for all sorts of character design, I very much agree with the "designing for clarity" ethos behind her 2.0 design. This makes me so happy to see, I've been taking notes to learn from in case some day I learn to design characters for vTuber rigging!

This was such a nice recap of all of this. I had always found her original model to feel off to me, and hadn't fully noticed the flat plane effect that it caused in its rigging. I never noticed how much of it was cluttered and lacked visual clarity either. And by the time i looked at the hair again from the back later on in the video, that immediately made me imagine some artists seeing that and going "Nope I'm not gonna try drawing that hair." She really does look like she fits into a Jrpg with the original though. But a in all, it's definitely a fantastic upgrade. For it to go with some lore makes it fit into place that much more too. Very happy for her.
@YamAlbat Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I’ve never seen a more fitting model redesign in the history of being a fan of VTubers. The clarity and rigging upgrades as well as tying it into the lore was done so well! And you’re right, the 1.0 would do amazing in a JRPG. Thanks for your comment!

It's kinda cool how it creates a fitting story to her kayfabe in that, despite how hard of a time it gave her, she still managed to rise above it and get accepted by the audience. That aside, always appreciate more love for IRyS and Redjuice in the world. Great video!

I didn't notice them to be toggles of the first model! I hope this 2.0 means more attention for IRyS because she deserves every fan she gets! I'm also glad Redjuice was redeemed in the eyes of the fans because he is such a talented artist!

You put out this video so fast. Congratz, it really shows how passionate you feel about everything. Redjuiced has a blog and he shared his thoughts there along side additional character design sheets. He mentioned being very proud of his CUTE-styled characters a he took this job very seriously. One correction: Gloom and Bloom are mascots she made with Sana and her chat. Her fans don't have a representation yet other than the silly stick figure. And also, talents can get as involved as they want with the design. For the kimonos/dresses they all were able to request ideas, only Ina respected her papa too much to say a thing. The best part of 2.0 is how happy and unleashed IRyS felt on her recent streams. I hope they fix the concave depth effect her eyes take when she looks to the sides. Good luck on your 2.0

The biggest thing for me was how much more expressive her face seems now. Her original design made her face seem very stiff and almost expressionless; that problem is entirely gone with her new model. Given how much VTubers use facial expressions to convey emotions, this change feels like a major improvement.

I was surprised by how consistent Irys' face was between her versions, yet the character was very firmly made to adhere to the Hololive aesthetic. That was sorcery. I was one of the people who didn't like how Irys looked at first, but because she was so fun to watch those positive feelings transferred to her slightly wonky model. So, I was worried about the 2.0 version of her perhaps losing some Irys feeling. But she's still her. But an even better her. A really impressive artistic achievement.

@YamAlbat Жыл бұрын
Thank you for commenting! IRyS does have a wonderful personality, which is why I think so many people were able to look past their dislike for her visual appearance. Redjuice really just updated her appearance so that the regular viewers of hololive would like her appearance more, but that doesn't mean the 1.0 was undesirable!
@Zergonapal Жыл бұрын
As a personal preference, I like royal purple more than magenta and I think RedJuice could have kept the hair that colour easily. With IRyS 1.0 I always thought the mouth seemed really stiff and perpetually grinning. But I dunno if it was the rigging around the mouth or a problem with the face tracking or some other issue. What I do know is the mouth is a lot more expressive in IRyS 2.0 and that tracks with the massive strides taken by riggers in the past year or so when it comes to making faces more alive and expressive. The model looks really good and I think it is gonna get her more fans who may have been put off by the appearance of IRyS 1.0.
@YamAlbat Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I hope the darker hair can be explored again in another outfit. Perhaps because this outfit is more on the angelic side, that's why her hair was brightened up. It would be a very neat detail if more of her demonic features and darker color palette made a return in another outfit. Knowing Redjuice's attention to detail, it might just happen! For now, I am just happy IRyS got the redesign she wanted, and more viewers will give her a chance. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Moreso, I'm very happy Iris can be happy and thrive now with a more updated model that has better physics! My only gripe I had with the old model is that the tracking was alittle wonky, as was mentioned in the video! the art wasn't really drawn with rigging in mind, so the face parameters weren't that great when moved left to right & vice versa. But in summary, I'm happy for Iris, I'm happy she's happy with an updated model! 🥰🙌🏻

Interesting. First I thought "why would they redesign her, possibly comissioning another artist? Irys 1.0 looked awesome but I figured the only reasons that could arise would come from a marketing/usage standpoint before clicking the video. @NotAGoodUsername360 Жыл бұрын
I always felt from debut 1.0 IrYS felt way too adherent to the character sheet, in a way that stuck out in particular because of her senpai Kiara, the product of a similarly iconic Japanese artist, huke. Kiara fit the aesthetic of huke (and goddamn does it show in her merch), but her model wasn't afraid to simplify for the clairity of motion. IrYS, in comparison, was so faithful to her reference that she actually looked like she was wearing a 90s anime mask, with dead eyes the heterochromia simply did not help and often gave her an almost crosseyed appearance. Her expressions also felt rigid and stiff with very little emotion behind them, further amplifying the uncanny effect, like looking at someone with shaved eyebrows. Yes, in stills she looked fantastic, but motion just did not work with 1.0 at all and it was distractingly noticeable even after a year of exposure. I'm so glad to see IrYS 2.0 and how happy she seems, like weights have been lifted off her shoulders.

great video! i personally liked the more elf-like face of the 1.0 model because I think it was unique and stood out more compared to a lot of the other character face designs. the rest of the outfit was, as you said, great for still images but definitely way more complicated which is why she usually didn't get as much fan art. i also think that with this more lighter themed design it leaves the door open for a darker themed design for when she feels like being more yabairys or a gremlin like red gura

Darker themed IRyS counterpart would be so cooL! I agree, I enjoy the elf-like aesthetics of her original face. Had Redjuice separated the layers better (and had Brian Tsui been the one to rig the 1.0) we may have seen IRyS 1.0 in a different light! Thanks for your comment!

Thank you for your kind words! I’m so glad Redjuice humbled himself and realized he had more to learn to make his VTuber child happy! He knocked it out of the park!

Not going to lie, but I cried when she fully revealed herself, manly tears of course.. it's not everyday that you can feel your oshi's happiness trough her voice, but her new design makes you feel energetic too, it's gorgeous. I liked your breakdown too

I always liked her OG design, and I did feel bad with the way people were so harsh about. I’m glad she got her new design, it looks really good.

Thank you for such a well thought out video. I'm not a perceptive person. Never even noticed she didn't "fit" the rest. You're break down was eye opening and easy to follow. Fantastic job!

Glad to hear it! That was the biggest sentiment in my community when I asked them to give me their opinions on IRyS 1.0. Her art style didn’t fit in with the others. Now she fits in, and she seems happy about it! Thank you for your comment!

I saw Irys on her debut day and was instantly disappointed with the model. It was drawn by a legendary artist but it just didn't translate well into live2D. Good to know she got this epic redesign, it looks amazing. Also props to redjuice for being humble, learning from their mistakes, and delivering!

Well thank you! That was a very well structured explanation! I guess I like both 1.0Rys and 2.0Rys, but the weirdness of 1.0Rys was what got me to watch here in the first place. But the adorable quality of 2.0Rys might win me over.

I think her 1.0 was like coconut. People either loved it or hated it. The important thing is IRyS is happy! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

While her design is still more "complicated" compared to her other gen-mates it's much more streamlined so it's a more cohesive complication(it's moved on from knitting to crochet for a clearer reference). Overall she matches the rest of her friends while still standing out in terms of design(just look at them), which stops the uncanny effect and doesn't make her feel/look like an outside collab. Her marketability has also improved drastically, you could believably simplify the format of her character if need be and fans have clearer markers for when they create anything with her character. I've only watched this video once and I can still get a good idea of how she looks color/clothes/shape wise. Her color palette is white in the middle with darker purples/red on the bottom with lighter/brighter versions on top. Her dress has triangular edges(general puff underneath) with long sleeves and flowers on either side of her waist at different sizes. Her diamonds create a faux arrow that points towards her head and wings. she has long socks/stockings and a giant heart diamond at the center of her chest with puffy sleeves that have a mascot on on either side. Her hair is much easier to create too since they look like swirls even with their more musical design. Her silhouette is still very diamond shaped despite the changes which makes sense given her lore but that's probably more coincidence than anything. As much as people might disagree, this is objectively a better design not just for hololive but Irys herself since she's the one that pushed for this for so long/hard. I'm just glad she's happy with it and can get more involved with her hololive friends now.

Agreed, I have already seen some very cute chibis of the IRyS 2.0, which illustrate that the elements of this design can be simplified much more effectively than her 1.0. Thanks for your comment!

Great Video! I have learnt a lot from it. Thank you for your explanations on how Redjuice did redesign. I would not have understand how much thought and work was put into it until you have pointed them out. It will make me come to appreciate other VTubers design. Keep up the good work!

New is great but I am going to miss the darker 1.0 color palette dearly. The new one is very saturated and less angular which was precisely what I liked about 1.0. This wont stop me from being fan tho Great Vid
@YamAlbat Жыл бұрын
I agree, the new color palette is very saturated and bright. I hope her darker color palette may make a return in an alternate outfit, maybe her kimono will be more demon themed!

Learning about the intricacies of both models, how some design elements got adapted, was really helpful. I never liked the 1.0 model but i could never explain why it felt so wrong. Thank you for helping me gain a a real appreciation for the old model, even with it's flaws as model it really is a beautiful art piece. Learning that rid bit of lore about her changing based on mood and her work as hope, i really want to see an alternate IRyS where she goes more demonic. Incredible video!

I think her original design was far superior, there were just issues with the animation for her face movements that gave an uncanny valley effect and the tutu would be hard to animate for a 3d model. Her new model is cute but in a much more generic way, but is more successful due to better animation and rigging. I wish her eyes stayed more like the first model. A little tilted and far apart and soft, which added to an otherworldly and dreamy look. Her eyes are very average now. Also should have kept the larger horns as they aren't very noticeable anymore. She looks too human now.

A little correction, the redesign didn't come because of backlash, IRyS actually pushed for the redesign herself! She also had the wing and halo toggle with 1.0! I love how both are so recognizably Redjuice, as 1.0 is just his normal illustrative art style and 2.0 is his anime style
@YamAlbat Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the corrections! That makes the redesign even more special to me!

I was looking for someone else who might talk about the changes in detail, and you caught all the words I was looking for. The new design's impression is brighter, with greater clarity. It keeps some of the core ideas, but reintroduced them with an elevated feeling. It's not just like a light had been shined, but there are so many parts that are smoother, and refined. It was a great reveal and this was a great look comparing the two side by side.

Thank you for the kind words! I saw a niche that no one was occupying on KZbin and I’m trying to fill it the best I can. VTuber design is a passion of mine! Seeing how happy IRyS was with the 2.0 made me so happy for her. She deserves to have a model she connects with!

I totally agree with IRyS's 1.0 design, I recall having to have major difficulty animating her design on a project, (before the new one existed) and it was admittedly difficult to translate her design in a 3D, moving space.
@Dubbleslice Жыл бұрын
With 1.0, I was mainly bothered by her chin and jaw. When she moved to the side, especially looking up, it was just felt off. I didn't even realize people were bothered by her nose. Her 2.0 is just so amazing.
@YamAlbat Жыл бұрын
From this comments section I’ve gathered that the uncanny valley look is caused by different parts for different people. For some people it’s the nose, for others it’s the eyes, and for others it’s the mouth. It’s interesting to see. Thank you for sharing your insight!

Understanding her original design more and how unique it is makes me miss it more, but i'm happy with the changes, and obviously IRyS is too and that's what matters. Very good deep dive into IRyS design btw Yam!

Thank you so much for the kind words! IRyS 1.0 is more unique than 2.0, but IRyS herself is just as unique on the inside!
