Yamamoto Genryusai is a badass, he has been the head captain for 1000 years, and in various snippets in the manga it was mentioned to be a more brutal period, when there were regular conflicts with the Quincies. So yes, old man Yamamoto is OP in his shikai and God tier in bankai, if he had released his Bankai, all things in creation would have turned into ashes. That's why Aizen had planned to prevent Yamamoto's sword, and this level of thinking capability makes Aizen a great villain.

Power Scaling in Bleach is one big issue, Aizen who can solo all Arrancar and Captains etc. says Shikai level Yamamoto would beat him (assuming he doesnt know about his Bankai, like many assume) That means Yamamoto if he wanted to could have gone into Hueco Mundo a long time ago, to kill all Hollows and then everyone could just chill... Especially with later content - Hollows are just ants the Soul Reapers leave around so that they have some fun... while the show for nearly 300 ep pretends that Hollows are the equal counter part to Soul Repears...

I understand this show feeling awesome when you just watched it... it is on retrospective only that you notice how very little plot it actually has (for the number of episodes) and most of the enjoyment of the show is shock value cause the action is really cool while lots of things make no sense, they are only a "because i said so" from kubo, and true... that is enough of a reason because it is made to look cool... which is also a valid and enjoyable strategy... but it can't go above other shows with more weight behind them... still it is quite up there...
