someone shared something interesting with me about this whole yamato thing. in japan, sons are often times the heirs of families and companies and the like. but if a eldest son is isn't born or dies, the eldest daughter takes up the role and the father would often call her "my son". its a bit more complicated than that due to naming conventions and the like but that why yamato is called kaido's "son".

Stop cherry picking your proof and look at what is right in front of you. Yamato refers to themself as a man, requests others to treat them as such, and the other characters in the show respect his wishes. If it makes you so uncomfortable to have your fragile worldview challenged just use neutral they/them pronouns to avoid trouble. It's not hard.

So with the anime revealing Yamato's identity/gender as a woman even though she is referred to as Kaido's "son", in which she is proclaiming herself As a man because she wants to be like Oden; I feel like people are gonna compare it to just like with Kiku, in which I feel like I should elaborate on Kiku's identity since it doesn't really get clarified in-story {by which I will paste what the translators had clarified}: "when Luffy and Chopper learn that Kikunojo was assigned male at birth, Kiku responds that she is a "woman at heart" (心は女です kokoro wa on'na desu?). When this scene came out, there was some confusion among English readers over whether this phrase meant that Kikunojo identifies as a woman. However, in Japanese this phrase is commonly used to identify someone as transgender. In Japanese folklore. Samurai were only allowed to be male. But women can get around that by either disguising themselves or giving up their the previous identity. Like Kiku and Yamato. Not so sure that so sure that it's the transgender though. But as a straight male I'm kind of disappointed. However, as a amateur writer and artist, and a fan of both anime/manga and history. I say it lines up pretty well, as the name Yamato. Which is Male/Unisex name that translates to 'A quality of a woman'. In fact, a prince from Japanese folklore went by that name.
