To be very clear: Yami could not have gotten out earlier. He was only able to get out at the end because he managed to learn a new spel born from the desperation of realizing Vetto would self-destruct. They even zoomed in into his grimoire shining a very bright purple to call attention to this, but you guys completely missed it.
