Okay! Looks like everyone is confused about wtf happened. Let me explain: Isaiah applied constant throttle into the corner and did not apply load into the front tire by trail braking. Constant throttle + adding lean angle + wet road = lack of traction. He could have fixed this by lightly rolling off the throttle, but by that point he kept applying throttle and the bike went down. **I was not speeding or riding aggressively** I told Isaiah before we went on this ride that it was wet and I was going to be riding 5mph under the speed limit at all times. I was extremely conscious to keep him safe but sometimes, it's out of my control. He is 100% okay and is super stoked he won the bike. He was a good sport! ALSO! I never forced Isaiah to do anything he wasn't comfortable with. We had a great day chatting about bikes, his plans with the Enfield, and more. He was okay with being on camera and he wanted to go ride!
@hps1955
@hps1955 Жыл бұрын
I can tell by the video he was not riding aggressive he was taking it nice and slow and I totally agree with letting off the throttle but riding since 1985 and a motorcycle mechanic since 1990 if he had better tires it might not have happened. If the tires where replace from the factory tires I am totally wrong but if the factory tires are still on the motorcycle then the tires definitely played in to the bike going down. Motorcycle racers have raced in the rain with maximum lean angles and don't low side because they have good tires and better notorcycle engineering ergonomics.

All this talk about rider error, physics, etc _ ALL BS. There is no way that tire should have lost grip at that speed with that lean angle. There are two feasible causes: rider hit an oil spot or something on the road that tucked the front; or 2. tires were scorched on the edges from track day abuse. Either way, if this were rider error, millions of motorcyclists across America would be dead already.

@Gismo3333
@Gismo3333 Жыл бұрын
You have to train on riding on gravel then. The bike is not suppose to kick out just because of gravel. That can happen if it is ice, but not gravel. It may have been braking that cased it. Maybe engine-braking. You have to brake very smooth and slow when you got less traction and lean into a corner. Both of them eating up the grip at the same time. But most of the time when the tires give out suddenly. It is because something abrupt happen. Slower and smoother on the clutch, throttle, brakes, steering, leaning… And it is always hard to know what happened after. At lest if you don't have video of it. And no matter how good you get at this, you need to be better and practice it every time you start riding. If not only for one or two minutes, when you leave your home down the street. Braking, counter-steering and being smooth on the controls. That is never a bad idea to start a ride. You also get your tires warmed up.

I'm glad he's o.k. The road was slick as snot so it takes damn near nothing to spin that rear tire. On a bike he never rode before. Life happens. Kind of makes me wonder too about the bikes I will buy if I get back into bikes. Definitely makes me think a good abs system might be a must. But I've done this numerous times when I was learning and a few times when the road caught me out. You ride eventually you will go down. If you aren't trying to win the race on a city street, usually, you get up, cuss yourself and laugh about it.

I watched the whole video but I still don't quite understand why this happened. I did not see any rider error, and the speed was appropriate for the rainy conditions. So the only explanations that I can think of is either there's some slick spot on the road that we just can't see, or maybe the tires aren't very good? Yammie took the same turn at the same speed and it looked perfectly fine, but maybe that bike has some nice grippy tires on it?

@@grumpyrider8801 When the handlebars turn in like that, it's not the rider who is doing this. It's the front wheel tucking; any time the front wheel loses traction in a turn, the bike will turn the front wheel towards the turn. I'm not sure if the rider can prevent this, but it's definitely not the rider who is turning the handlebars to the inside, the bike does that on its own. If the slippery spot is small, then the bike will correct itself. But if the slippery spot is too large and the slide takes too long, then the bike will fall and during that fall, the handlebars will turn all the way to the inside. That's how one can tell that the front wheel lost traction (if the rear wheel loses traction, then the front doesn't tuck, so by looking at the handlebars in the video, you can always tell which wheel lost traction). This rider was smooth on the controls, constant speed, that's about as stable as one can be. Yammie's bike had the same speed and lean angle and didn't slide. I think what this video shows is that the tires on the RE were not as good as those on Yammie's bike.
@grumpyrider8801
@grumpyrider8801 Жыл бұрын
@@mhoeij I'm sorry but I kept watching it over and over and it seems to me that he may have attempted to increase lean angle, tighten up the turn cause he was running wider than Yammie, and yes the end result is the front washing out the way you describe, We can only speculate as we were not there, and everything from tires to tire pressure will create a different outcome.
@mhoeij
@mhoeij Жыл бұрын
@@grumpyrider8801 Attempting to lean the bike, that's just another way of saying he was attempting to take a turn. The main thing is: There were no abrupt movements from the rider. No abrupt throttle/brake/steering. So I completely disagree that there was rider error here, in wet conditions, we should ride smoothly, and that's what he did. Now I do know from personal experience (switching bikes with a buddy) that on a cold wet road, when you switch from a bike with sports tires to a bike with touring tires, if you don't slow down, you're going to slide. There's a huge difference in traction between a sport-touring tire and a touring tire. I certainly believe Yammie when he says that the tire was fine. But a fine touring tire, that doesn't have the grip of a fine sport-touring tire, it's a big difference. If he had ridden exactly like he did, but on my SV650, there's no way the bike would have slid out. This rider is probably used to having great tires. But for the touring tires (or classic-look tires) this turn was too much, and when you're used to great tires, then that'll come as a surprise to the rider. One last thing: forums on this bike also complain about the stock tires. If other owners don't like the tires, chances are we have to go slower than other bikes in cold/wet conditions.

Might not want to ride your first ride in the rain. He was probably trying to keep up with Yammie and the tires were not quite right for the rain. Yammie should at least clean the bike up, buff it out and replace the grip and lever before shipping it back. He can afford it and it would be a nice gesture.

It happens man; took it like a champ. The bike can be fixed. Anyone who tells you they've not been down on a motorcycle either just started or is lying. Happens to all of us, don't sweat it. About 3 weeks ago, I picked up my first, brand new bike which is also my first liter bike. The ride home was like something out of a 3rd rate disaster film, fog so thick I could see about 10ft. Mountain passes (which was my fault, I wanted to go over the mountain as a "fun" first ride on the new bike, I should have known better when I saw the weather threatening). And, towards the elevation peaks, guess what? Yea, you got it, snow. And me riding a 165HP 25,000 dollar motorcycle that, when the snow hit, might have had 35 miles on the odometer. I made it, but it was SLOW going. Yes, that's me, riding a motorcycle that can do 186MPH at 10MPH in a sweeper. Deal with it. First rule, forget what other people think. If you fall, it's not the people making fun of you for riding slow who are sliding across the pavement its you and your bike. Way to recover though, get it fixed up and get back on the bike.

The roads can get real slick right when it starts raining. That combined with inexperience with the bike (or in general). It looked like the back-end was sliding for a good second or two before he even started reacting. Also if conditions are sketchy it doesn’t hurt to counter-lean!

It looks like a counter steering mistake to me; he tried to turn his handlebars to the right on a right hand turn. He should have been pushing the right handle bar forward or away from him. If you want to turn right you have got to push the right handle bar forward and away from you; that will cause the bike to lean right. Anyway I'm glad he is OK.
