I enjoy the ride and love the bike, I found out a few weeks ago that there is another fun thing that I hadn't thought of before, when people see an R3 pull into the parking lot they just assume that it is just some kid riding it and when I stop and take off my helmet and they see the salt/pepper hair and the all white beard they quickly turn and walk away in hopes that none of their friends saw them looking at the old man on the bike, what can I say, old guys rule.

Millenial who finally became a motorcycle owner here. I want to give my experience: 1) rent demographics have changed massively. My town used to have houses for rent by owners. Now almost every apartment is a home turned duplex, owned by a property management firm with leases written by lawyers. EVERY apartment in my town with off street parking has a term in the lease specifying one vehicle on the property per unit, regardless of type, size, or how many you can fit in a space. 2) I fully believed by Gen X parents who told me that they all had hundreds of friends who died in motorcycle accidents brutally. In the last year or so, I found out that almost every one of them was some 18 year old kid wearing shorts and a t-shirt who died at 100mph in a tree. Nobody wants to say that their reckless friend was 100% at fault for turning themself into beef stroganoff... but if they were honest with us, it wouldnt put us off so massively. 3) Almost every biker I know is an overweight angry boomer with an entitlement complex and a bike that costs more than my car. That doesnt turn me off to bikes. But it makes it really hard to drive with somebody while you have a permit... and your average car driver has no idea that you can get your license by passing a motorcycle course. 4) Almost every mechanic in 30 miles of my home are exclusively Harley mechanics. The two that arent will only work on metric bikes that are 15 or newer. None of them work on road bikes with carbs. You can find good deals on bikes, but you cant find mechanics to fix them. 4) the reason you dont meet millenials who can even change their own brakes is because our parents taught us that if you do a repair and something goes wrong, you can be held liable. My family taught me to change a tire. They refused to show me how to do engine/brake repair. Most of us have started picking up a lot of skills out of necessity, but our generation was actively steered away from it... and by this point, so many of our parents are dead or due to age unable to get under a bike/car for hours anymore. We learn, and we ARE learning. But we arent really getting any of this from our parents. I'm glad I got a bike. It's simple enough to repair, isnt computerized, and saves a ton of gas. With gas over $5 a gallon, I think you're going to be seeing a lot more bikers out there. Hell, when the boomers start kicking it en masse and flood the market with their overpriced status symbol bikes, you'll probably start to see more harley riders again, too!

I'm not rich but I saved my arse off last year to be able to afford my bike, I work a part time job which pays around £150 a week (decent money for part time employment I know), most of that money goes towards insurance and petrol. I had my dad help me get half the insurance payed off for this year but I've began saving to be able to pay him back and pay the insurance come next year. I don't think a lot of people my age manage their money too well and are more concerned on looking good and having flashy electronics, but hey-ho I'm the one over here with a bike laughing at them being picked up by their parents. The issues are: Motorcycles are expensive. Speaking as an oldie we bought bikes because they were cheaper than cars. Now you can buy a small new car for the same price as a scooter. Motorcycles are big. They suffered from inflation in weight and engine size. A 750 used to be a big bike, now it's a middleweight. People used to have fun on a 250 or a 400. They killed 2-strokes. Strokers were cheap. A Yamaha LC350 could keep up with big bikes and allowed people to ride like a maniac. Bikes have an image problem. In the 1970s bikes were ridden by fit young dudes. Now when the visor is flipped you'll see a retired person on a bike capable of TT racing. Bikes used to be bikes. Big, Small. Now they've hybridised into a dozen niches in a bid to a capture a disappearing demographic. For many, many years I was a 12 month a year biker. Sun, rain, snow it was all the same to me. 38 mile commute plus weekends. Now a motorcycle is a leisure item like a speedboat or a hang glider. Nobody takes their bike out in the rain, they get in the car.

Borderlands Too true, its quite possible to get a serviceable Corolla for half the price of a decent 500cc to 650cc bike. For the cost of a new fat Harley you can get a second hand BMW M3! Also the difference in running costs, cars to bikes, are not so large as 30 years ago. Back in the 1970's i bought a near new Honda 750 K2 for $1,000. For that money back then in Australia cars were clunkers and unreliable. And these days young women are not so keen to jump pillion on a bike. So biking is more individualistic, whereas Millenials are more gregarious, cost/value conscious. My 26yo son thinks bikes are "old manny"...he drives an old Honda Civic and saves his money.

You only live once, may as well enjoy it. It’s crazy how few younger riders are on the road, I think it’s just not a priority for most youth anymore. You must be a millennial, blaming someone with an entry-level position 40 years ago. Blame the banks that gave out $400,000 mortgages to a person making $25,000 a year.
@PaulGuy6 жыл бұрын
@@kmpaton Who do you think runs those banks? Who do you think works on Wall Street? Who do you think works in government making laws? Baby boomers. Gen X'ers. People 40-70's. It's not the 8 year old kids having sideline tantrums. It's not teenagers who are voting against financing infrastructure maintenance and then wondering why bridges are collapsing and roads are terrible. It's not 20 year olds making laws to protect the neighborhoods they've lived in for 30 years from new people moving in. It's the olds. Unfortunately, college debt is a huge issue also. As long as the government will loan any amount for college, no matter how useless the degree, millennials are doomed to be behind the financial power curve. If careers were pushed, kids then can make a real game plan. If the game plan is college, what is next? I worked in power sports, 2 wheeled sales were way down. The trend is sideXsides. As successful people tend to have kids later in life, they tend to get 4 seaters for family weekends verses a bunch of dirt bikes. I spent 30 years in Southern California and their are still a lot of motorcycles, but nothing like the 80's and 90's. Harley's are a funny thing. I ride one, but over 15,000 miles a year on it, and I live where we get snow. I went to my local motorcycle dealer, not a Harley dealer, they have about 15 Harley's some 6 or 7 years old, all under 6,000 miles, many under a 1,000. You dentist comment is spot on. They are a midlife crisis buy. Ride it a few times, to much bike for them. You may laugh at that, but a 800lb bagger is not a beginners bike. Go visit any Harley dealer, they will be chock full of very low mileage used Harley's. True story, we sold Victory among other brands. In the year I worked there, I sold half of the Victory's sold that year. Don't remember who sold the other one.

I've always had a fascination with bikes but I never bothered learning because, as is too often the case, my parents demonized them until I lost interest and moved on from that dream for years. Now having learned to ride at age 30, I regret not learning earlier in life. Not putting blame on my parents but if someone doesn't have any practical experience riding, you ultimately shouldn't let them influence your decision to ride a motorcycle.

Is buying a motorcycle really a bad financial decision? Going around town on my motorbike is quicker and cheaper than buying a public transport ticket, it is probably more than 10x cheaper than taking an uber. A bike (2012 Kawasaki er6n) I bought and then sold after 2 years costed me in depreciation exactly 50 dollars to own for two years (and I got to keep a carbon fiber helmet, a jacket and gloves I got free of charge with it) The maintenance included one set of tires and oild changes, insurance was 100dollars per year. If I was taking public transport it would have costed me more. Not even considering the other benefits, like no speeding tickets, parking wherever for free and lane splitting through traffic jams therefore always knowing when I am going to arrive and so on... Bikes make more sense than ever, I would say the real reason why there could be a decline in bike ownership is that bikes do not attract girls anymore and they are not as status elevating as they used to be.

One of your best videos yet. I am an old dude at 52. The peak of motorcycle sales and riding has passed us by and it will continue to decline for a long time. I went through my big displacement BMW phase ten years ago and am very happy with my 700 cc adventure style bike because i don’t feel the need to ride fast anymore. If you look at the history of motorcycle riding in general, it didn’t really take off until the small engine affordable Honda’s started selling in the late 60’s. Harley’s success is mostly attributable to the Baby Boomers and we know most of their lives are on the downhill now. I am OK with all of that. It will allow the mystique of riding to continue.
@GnarshredProductions6 жыл бұрын
too bad Harley Davidson got rid of Buell motorcycles they would probably have better sales if they made more than just cruiser bikes. Millennial's generally want smaller sport bikes built for speed that aren't too expensive which is why the suzuki gsxr and kawasaki ninja are so popular. With all the idiot drivers on the road not paying attention though it is pretty dangerous to be on a motorcycle and being a young kid on a loud fast sport bike attracts attention from the police you just have to accept that your gonna get pulled over and hassled all the time.

The reason i sold my bike was that we live in the world of distractions.. I watched over years of riding as more friends where injured due to driver negligence, lost a lot of friends to traffic accidents and was finally knocked off my bike at lights by a driver on his phone playing solitaire on his phone while he drove.. I just valued living and being available to my family over the freedom my bike provided. Track riding is too expensive a habit and i don't believe the police with their fancy ass speed cameras actually give a real shit about policing anybody on their phone so i can definitely understand why riding is a declining thing in some aspects. In many others its growing and that is definitely due to the urbanization of the world and the lower price of fantastic bikes thanks to those powerhouse Japanese companies so i don't think the decline will last.

As part of the ‘forgotten generation’ (Gen X) I came into bikes in my 30s. I bought one, was hooked and it’s been 8 years of being on two wheels and obsessed with all things motorcycle. The industry has gotten thousands upon thousands of dollars of my income spent on the three bikes I currently own (been through others and will continue to go through new ones) and the gear I keep replacing because constant rain ages things quickly. X-/ Maybe the millennials will follow? A good divorce sucking the joy out of life makes you look for something to spark fear and life back into you and motorcycles are adrenaline on two wheels.
