I don't think this is anywhere near as bad as many people make out, the fretless bass sounds like a Roland U-220 sound module and the piano sounds like an Emu Proteus/1. They hired session musicians to record real saxophone and electric guitar parts as synthesized saxophone and electric guitar probably wouldn't have cut it ( although I personally think midi synthesized saxophones sound OK but even in 1993 the bar was still quite high for TV broadcast music and the money earned from this being pitched was more than it otherwise cost to hire session musicians to play some instrument parts live ). In August or September 2008 at a friend's 21st birthday party we had to play pass the parcel with this version of Eastenders back to back with Songs of Praise singing Glory be to God on high to Eastenders theme tune ( yes in 1988 BBC Songs of praise really did do this! ). Here's another intersting fact about the Eastenders them tune it's actually loosely based on a song from the 70s called Fairytale by Dana ( as they both sound similar ).

This was part of a total rework of EE. New opening and closing sequences, which replaced the blue and grey ones which had been around since 1985. The green titles remain to this day but not the track sadly... The actual track used for the title sequence didn't include this much sax. This is the instrumental version of the track for the vocal version called I'll Always Believe in You by Sharon Benson, released in 1993. I remember seeing it on TOTP!
@theparrybrothers4 жыл бұрын
The titles have been completely redone twice since this version debuted. The river hasn’t been green in over 20 years, lol. They first changed in 1999 to feature a more animated grey/ silvery river, and then they were done again in 2009 to include clouds and an ill-fitting tropical colour scheme... because nothing screams London like lush mint-greenery, wispy clouds and a dark blue river...🤷🏻♂️

There were downer moments in it, but more than enough cheers to make the episodes almost seem unrecognizable compared to the show as it is now. I think it started to just get plain miserable around 1999, and then ridiculously so from 2001 onwards, where the show just seemed obsessed with contriving the worst outcomes and the worst nature in every character.

The tune itself is actually very good. However, if used now, it just would not fit with the tone of Eastenders. Eastenders is a dark and gritty soap drama and the music played in this version somewhat lightens the tone which would not work. Also, it would sound dated as well as being poked fun at as sounding like Porn music or Ceefax music. The style of this music should have been used as the theme tune for the short lived Eldorado soap drama back in the early 1990's as it's got a bright and sunny feel to it.

It sounds a bit like what you'd expect more from a Geordie soap (I think because of that sax song they play at St. James Park, plus the TV image still has them in Mullets, frozen in time). Tune notwithstanding doesn't feel like you're about to watch a cockney soap listening to this.
